A degloving foot injury in a traffic accident.

An unusual human remain found on a road became one key to reconstruct the traffic accident. A woman was found dead on a snow-covered road. Her left foot showed a large deficit of skin and underlying fat tissue. The detached skin and tissue were found into her left sock and shoe lying at a distance of 23 m from the body. There were multiple fractures on her back and occipital cranial bone. Severe injuries revealed in heart, liver, and brain. The neck remained intact. These findings suggested that her back has been strongly hit by the object with the flat surface, for example, the front side of

A case of thoracic degloving injury with flail chest.

A 75-year-old male patient suffered a chest degloving injury when he fell on his back and was run over by a small farm tractor he was pulling. At the time of patient admission, the paradoxical motion of the right chest wall was remarkable; and he had an open fracture of the right humerus, a dislocation of the right ankle, and a laceration of the right forearm. Chest computed tomography revealed fractures of the fifth to seventh ribs and detachment of both the right pectoralis major muscle and serratus anterior muscle from the chest wall, with a disconnected right thoracic cavity. Because the r

Closed internal degloving injury with conservative treatment.

In the emergency department, we frequently manage patients with multiple contusions and bruise over the trunk without severe injuries. Emergency department discharge is a common option for these patients, and we may neglect the existence of closed internal degloving injury, which is a soft tissue injury with pelvic trauma, combining the subcutaneous tissue torn away from the underlying fascia followed by a cavity being filled with hematoma and liquefied fat created in the next few days (Harefuah 2006;145:111-3:66, J Trauma 1997;42:1046). We report the unusual occurrence of this entity in an 18

Management and Novel Treatment of Degloving Soft Tissue Injuries: A Case Report.

Degloving soft tissue injuries (DSTIs) are injuries usually due to trauma sustained parallel to the body, shearing off skin and soft tissue from the underlying muscle and bone. Most commonly due to workplace and traffic accidents, DSTIs can occur due to a variety of traumas, resulting in a wide spectrum of clinical presentations. Treatment is often prolonged and complex, which requires the intervention of a multidisciplinary healthcare team to provide the most optimal outcomes. In this case, we report an 89-year-old male presenting with a lower left leg degloving injury due to a single motor v

Diagnosis and Management of Closed Internal Degloving Injuries: The Morel-Lavallée Lesion.

BACKGROUND: Morel-Lavallée (ML) lesions are closed degloving injuries described as posttraumatic subcutaneous fluid collections. They are most commonly seen in the proximal thigh. They can present several days to months after the inciting event. CASE REPORT: A 55-year-old woman with a recent admission for trauma presented to the Emergency Department with increasing swelling and pain in the right thigh for the previous 3 days. Ultrasound of the thigh was negative. Magnetic resonance imaging performed to further evaluate for leg swelling revealed a "Morel-Lavallée lesion" of the thigh that requ…

Treatment of degloving injuries with autogenous full thickness mesh scrotal free grafts.

In this report, we evaluated the effectiveness of scrotal tissue as an autogenous free skin graft to treat cutaneous degloving injuries of the distal limb in dogs. Surgery was performed on two male intact dogs with distal extremity degloving wounds. Dog #1 had a tarsal degloving wound with exposure of the distal tibial and tarsal bones. Dog #2 had a degloving injury over the metacarpals. Wounds were treated with daily wet-to-dry bandages in order to develop a healthy bed of granulation tissue at the graft recipient site. Scrotal ablation castration was performed once the recipient site had bee…

High rates of morbidity and mortality in dogs with physiologic degloving injuries.

OBJECTIVE: To describe clinical progression of dogs with physiologic degloving injuries, including bloodwork abnormalities, nutritional management, wound care, and the need for advanced care such as blood products. METHODS: Medical records of client-owned dogs with physiologic degloving injuries between 2011 and 2025 were retrospectively reviewed. Data collected included clinical presentation, bloodwork, wound progression, diagnostic imaging, and treatment interventions. Dogs were grouped based on survival to discharge (survivors or nonsurvivors). RESULTS: 18 dogs were identified following m…

Evaluating Pedicled Groin Flap Reconstruction in Hand Degloving Injuries: A Retrospective Analysis.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of pedicled groin flap coverage in such injuries and identify factors associated with postoperative complications and flap viability. METHODS: A retrospective review of 23 patients who underwent pedicled groin flap reconstruction for finger or hand degloving injuries between 2015 and 2024 was conducted. Patient demographics, surgical details, complication rates, aesthetic outcomes, and functional recovery were analyzed. RESULTS: The cohort had a mean age of 27.9 years, with a male predominance (73.9%) and a high smoking rate (73.9%)…

Degloving Injuries of Upper Extremity: A Strategy with Full Thickness Skin Mesh.

Degloving injuries of the upper extremity during work are rare nowadays, because of effective worker protection devices. However, these devastating injuries still occur today during motor vehicle car accidents and surgeons have to be aware of the possibilities of wound coverage for these large, contaminated wounds. We present two cases of degloving injuries of the hand and entire forearm using degloved skin as meshed full thickness skin graft to cover the entire wound. Two patients were admitted to our hospital, presenting large degloving injuries of the entire forearm and hands. Both patients…

Management of degloving injuries of the lower extremity: a case report of a forklift injury.

UNLABELLED: Soft-tissue injuries of the foot and ankle can vary from crushing to penetrating mechanisms. Degloving injuries of the lower extremity are the result of an entrapment between a fixed surface and a moving object. These injuries pose significant morbidity and potential complications (eg, infection) to the patient if prompt wound coverage is not initiated. The authors present a case of an extensive degloving injury to the foot, ankle, and lower leg from a forklift accident. With the collaborative effort of the podiatry and plastic surgery teams, the patient underwent serial debridemen…

Investigating Weekend Effect in the Management of Upper and Lower Extremity Degloving Injuries.

BACKGROUND: Weekend presentation has been associated with adverse outcomes in emergent conditions, including stroke, myocardial infarction, and critical limb ischemia. We examine whether a weekend effect exists in the management of and outcomes after extremity degloving injuries. METHODS: The cohort included adults presenting with open extremity degloving injuries to a tertiary level one trauma center between June 2018 and May 2022. We collected demographics, comorbidities, injury information, interventions, and complications. Propensity score weighting was used to minimize confounding differ…

Use of ring fixator in the management of degloving injuries of lower limb.

High-velocity trauma causes degloving injuries of extremities. Management depends upon the viability of the degloved flap. The degloved area must be covered either with flaps or with split skin grafts. Various methods have been described to provide skin coverage. However, graft uptake depends upon the surgical expertise, graft quality, graft bed circulation and of course immobilization of the grafted area, especially across joints. We describe here a simple technique, which eventually helps graft bed preparation, eases application of graft tissue, facilitates graft care and allows passive mobi…

A rare case of closed degloving injury of the fifth toe.

Empty toe injury is a rare type of closed degloving injury; limited cases have been reported previously, with controversial outcomes. Our case is a 22 year old male who was injured by a trolley bus. The patient presented at our emergency department with extensive swelling of the right foot, deformity of the fifth toe, bruising and intact skin. On clinical examination the phalangeal bone could not be palpated in the fifth toe and there was no capillary refill. The patient underwent open reduction combined with fasciotomies. The toe regained perfusion after the reduction and was under close obse

Degloving Injury of the Lower Extremity: Report of Two Cases.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of our article is to highlight the importance of the immediate treatment of lower extremity degloving injuries, in order to prevent complications. CASES PRESENTATION: Here we present two cases of degloving injury of the lower extremity, both resulting from motorway accidents. The first one concerned a 65-year-old man suffering from multiple limb fractures and a degloving injury of the right thigh, which was immediately treated with extensive debridement and primary full-thickness skin graft re-approximation. The second case involved a 63-year-old woman who presented with ce…
