Dysphagia is a common complaint following surgical intervention in the oral cavity and hypopharynx, often leading to prolonged postoperative recovery. Videofluoroscopy allows detailed visualization of deglutition, demonstrating the morphology as well as the functional aspects. A literature review was conducted on temporal measures of swallowing in healthy individuals with the purpose of determining the degree of variability present in such measures within the literature. A total of 46 studies that met inclusion criteria were reviewed. The definitions and descriptive statistics for all reported temporal parameters were compiled for meta-analysis. Neither cineradiography nor videorecording are satisfactory techniques for the dynamic study of the oral phase of deglutition. Therefore, oral swallowing was studied by means of real-time sonography (US) in 20 asymptomatic patients. Both anatomy and motility of the muscles of the mouth and tongue were clearly demonstrated. Real-time US proved thus to allow an accurate and dynamic visualization of the oral phase of deglutition.

Deglutitive syncope is defined as a neurally mediated syncope in which loss of consciousness occurs during or immediately after swallowing. The causes of deglutitive syncope vary widely and range from intraluminal causes, as well as extra-esophageal compression. In this case report, we present a rare case of deglutitive syncope caused by a thoracic aortic aneurysm compressing the proximal esophagus, a clinical entity described in the literature as dysphagia aortica.
