Recent advances in occupational dermatitis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review examined recent advances in occupational contact dermatitis (OCD). RECENT FINDINGS: Both genetic and environmental factors contribute to OCD. There is continuing growth in our understanding of the genetic factors, particularly related to filaggrin mutations. In spite of increased understanding of irritant exposures, the prevalence of hand eczema in workers with wet work exposures remains high at approximately 20%. Patch test database surveillance systems have documented reductions in the occurrence of sensitivity to some allergens such as chromium wherein regula

Occupational carprofen photoallergic contact dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug carprofen was used in humans in the 1980s, before its withdrawal due to adverse effects. It re-emerged for veterinary uses, for which it is still widely prescribed, in the 1990s. There has been one previous report published of photoallergic contact dermatitis (PACD) in a pharmaceutical factory worker exposed to carprofen. OBJECTIVES: Investigation of carprofen as a cause of PACD in pharmaceutical factory workers presenting with facial dermatitis. METHODS: Photopatch testing to carprofen dilutions in two pharmaceutical factory workers and th

Occupational and non-occupational allergic contact dermatitis from beryllium.

There are various references to sensitization to beryllium in the literature. Since introducing a patch testing series for patients with suspected sensitization to metals, we have found 3 cases of sensitization to beryllium. Of these 3 cases, we regard the first 2 as having relevant sensitization. Beryllium chloride (1% pet.) was positive in 3 patients and negative in 150 controls.

Occupational Contact Dermatitis in Firefighters.

Occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) emerges as a salient concern within the context of firefighters, a professional cohort routinely exposed to an array of hazardous substances as an intrinsic facet of their occupational responsibilities. This continual skin exposure to a spectrum of allergenic and irritant agents engenders an elevated predisposition to OCD among firefighters. Notably, the ramifications of OCD in the domain of occupational health assume substantial import, contributing significantly to the prevalence of work-related dermatological maladies and consequential productivity decr

Occupational Contact Dermatitis: An Update.

Occupation contact dermatitis (CD) is a common inflammatory skin condition impacting every professional industry in the United States. It is associated with significant personal and professional distress, loss of revenue, and decreased productivity. Occupational CD is further subdivided into irritant CD and allergic CD. Frequently, workers may suffer from a combination of both types. Numerous workplace exposures are implicated, but there are several themes across professions, such as CD related to frequent handwashing and wet work. A detailed occupational history, physical examination, and pat

[News on occupational contact dermatitis].

Contact dermatitis--irritant contact dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis and protein contact dermatitis--are the most common occupational skin diseases, most often localized to the hands. Contact urticaria is rarer The main occupational irritants are wet work, detergents and disinfectants, cutting oils, and solvents. The main occupational allergens are rubber additives, metals (chromium, nickel, cobalt), plastics (epoxy resins, acrylic), biocides and plants. Diagnosis is based on clinical examination, medical history and allergy testing. For a number of irritating or sensitizing agents, ir

[Occupational contact dermatitis in hairdressers].

Numerous data from the medical literature show that working as a hairdresser is associated with the highest risk of occupational contact dermatitis. In Europe, hairdressers rank first of all occupation groups with the highest prevalence of occupational dermatitis. It is estimated that 10-20% and even 50% of hairdressers are affected with skin disorders. Skin problems occur soon after commencing hairdressing, in the first 2 years of work, sometimes during vocational training. The most common factors contributing to skin damage include water, shampoos, detergents, conditioners, hair dyes, bleach

Occupational dermatitis from soldering flux.

The aim of this study was to determine the specific agent responsible for eczema on the forearms of 2 electronic assemblers who cleaned out a flux-spraying unit once a week. Soldering flux can be a source of skin irritation as well as allergy. Patch test with dried flux residue (as is) and rosin in dilution series of 20%, 10%, and 1% in olive oil was performed. Readings were taken on day 2 and day 3. The rosin in dilution series was negative; however, the flux residue gave a + reaction on day 2, and by day 3 the reaction had weakened (+?). Similar results were obtained in 2 unexposed controls.

[Occupational dermatitis: irritation or allergy?].

Occupational dermatitis is a very frequent subject of consultation, as much in general practice as in dermatology. The most frequently found pathologies are linked to environmental factors. In these cases, irritant dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis represent the majority of the cutaneous problems. Rigorous history taking associated with an attentive examination and a few investigations, essentially consisting of skin testing, form an incontestable tripod. The therapeutic approach, as much preventative as curative, can only be envisaged after having made a precise diagnosis, of which t

Occupational contact dermatitis to gold.

A case of occupational contact dermatitis to gold is presented. This is uncommon as gold is relatively insoluble. Allergic contact dermatitis to gold is confirmed by patch testing with gold sodium thiosulfate 0.5% in petrolatum. Occupational contact dermatitis in the gold industry can be reduced by providing workers with more protective gear and better ventilation.

Occupational dermatitis associated with garments.

An outbreak of irritant contact dermatitis associated with residual percholorethylene (PCE) in dry-cleaned garments was studied at a large semiconductor manufacturing facility. A new method was developed to measure PCE levels which detected concentrations of 0.83 to 32.01 ppm in the garment.
