[Dermatomyositis].

When examining the skin manifestations of dermatomyositis, it is important to systematically observe the frequently affected sites. The head and the hands are particularly important. It is critical to look not just for symptoms included in the classification criteria, such as heliotrope rash and Gottron's papules/signs, but also for other rashes. Recent studies have demonstrated that specific autoantibodies are useful tools to subgroup dermatomyositis, and the skin manifestations are also closely correlated with these autoantibodies.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a systemic inflammatory disease involving skin, muscles and other organs. Immunologically mediated inflammation of small vessels leads to vascular damage, especially of the muscular tissue. Typically DM presents clinically with DM-type local or generalized rash and proximal muscular weakness. Laboratory signs of muscular damage (elevated serum CK, myoglobinuria) may be initially absent. Magnetic resonance tomography frequently shows edema of the involved muscles, while electromyography shows a myopathic pattern with spontaneous activity. Muscle biopsy from involved musc

[Dermatomyositis].

Dermatomyositis is a form of idiopathic inflammatory myopathy that involves skeletal muscle and skin. The objectives of this review are to briefly describe the cutaneous manifestations of the disease, to raise some questions still debated about amyopathic dermatomyositis, and to reflect current knowledge of an interesting aspect in dermatomyositis as it is the risk to develop malignancy. Although clear evidence for a significant dermatomyositis-cancer association exists, optimal clinical or biological factors that predict an association with cancer have not been identified. Recently, some spec

[Dermatomyositis].

Dermatomyositis is a connective tissue inflammatory disease characterized by muscle and skin inflammation. The dermatological manifestations that characterize the disease include heliotrope erythema, Gottron's papules, violaceous scalling patches, periungual erythema telangiectasias, poikiloderma and scaly red scalp. The diagnostic workup includes skin diagnosis, muscle biopsy, muscle enzymes, electromyography, ANAs, antibodies against SSA (Ro), SSB (La), Sm, nRNP, Jo-1 and PM-1. The aim of this study is illustrate the most salient dermatological images of a patient with dermatomyositis.

Dermatomyositis.

Dermatomyositis is one of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. It is characterized clinically by progressive symmetrical proximal muscle weakness and a characteristic rash. There are patients with rash who have little or no muscle disease. Although the process primarily attacks the skin and the muscles, it is a systemic disease with frequent manifestations in the gastrointestinal tract and pulmonary system. Dermatomyositis has been linked to internal malignancy in somewhere between 15% and 25%. Therapy for the muscle disease includes systemic corticosteroids with or without an immunosuppres

Dermatomyositis.

Dermatomyositis is a disease that has a characteristic skin eruption that may occur with or without a proximal myopathy. The disease with cutaneous features only is classified as amyopathic dermatomyositis. The origin is unknown, but autoimmune factors are believed to play an important role. Autoantibodies are found in most patients and some have myositis-specific antibodies. Systemic changes may occur and there appears to be a relationship to internal malignancy, particularly in older patients. Juvenile disease has an associated vasculopathy. Treatment includes systemic corticosteroids and ot

Dermatomyositis is one of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies with characteristic cutaneous manifestations including the heliotrope rash, Gottron's papules, cuticular changes including periungual telangiectasia, a photodistributed erythema or poikiloderma, and a scaly alopecia. Dermatomyositis has been linked to cancer, particularly ovarian cancer. Cancer-associated disease is more commonly found in older patients, and when present, is associated with a poor prognosis. A childhood form of the disease exists and is frequently complicated by the development of calcinosis. Dermatomyositis is a

Pregnancy in DM/PM is infrequent probably because of the late age of onset of the disease. When pregnancy occurs in patients with long-standing remissions of childhood onset DM/PM the risk of exacerbation is 40 per cent and the prognosis for the fetus is reasonably good. If pregnancy starts in patients already diagnosed and under steroid treatment of DM/PM, the frequency of exacerbations is low (16 per cent) and the outcome of pregnancy is not as good, with only 50 per cent at-term babies and 37.5 per cent fetal loss. When DM/PM has its onset during pregnancy the fetal mortality reaches 62 per

Dermatomyositis.

Dermatomyositis and polymyositis are diseases which must be carefully defined in each patient. Criteria such as those suggested by Bohan and Peter will help define the disease and exclude other possible causes of myositis. Immunological factors are probably involved in the pathogenesis of the disease, although varied types of injury may manifest in clinically similar disease. Dermatomyositis, not polymyositis, is related to internal malignancy in adults; however, an extensive malignancy evaluation is not indicated. Therapy with corticosteroids will improve the quality of life, will prevent con

Amyopathic dermatomyositis or dermatomyositis-like skin disease: retrospective review of 16 cases with amyopathic dermatomyositis.

Amyopathic dermatomyositis (ADM) is characterized by the presence of dermatomyositis (DM) for 6 months or more in individuals who have normal muscle enzymes and no clinically significant muscle weakness. The aim of the study was to investigate the initial laboratory data, clinical manifestations, complications, and clinical outcomes of patients with the diagnosis of ADM. We reported 16 cases with the cutaneous findings of dermatomyositis without clinical or laboratory evidence of muscle disease for at least 2 years after onset of the skin manifestations in the Department of Dermatology and Rhe

Juvenile Dermatomyositis.

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a systemic capillary vasculopathy. Patients present with proximal muscle weakness, raised muscle enzymes, and pathognomic skin rashes such as heliotrope rash, Gottron's papules. Main complications are calcinosis, lipodystrophy, osteoporosis. Complement-mediated damage of vessels is a major mechanism. Magnetic resonance imaging is currently widely used to diagnosis of JDM. The goals of treatment are to control inflammatory myositis and prevent disease complication. Early, aggressive treatment of JDM associated with a better prognosis. High-dose corticosteroids

Juvenile dermatomyositis.

Juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) is a systemic, inflammatory, idiopathic disease, mainly affecting the skin and the muscles, starting before the age of 16, with an incidence around one case per 1 million children. Some patients display typical features of JDM without skin involvement, or even without muscle involvement; however, both tissues are affected over time in most cases. Diagnosis criteria were established by Bohan and Peter 35 years ago, based on the presence of typical skin rash and proximal muscle involvement. Other conditions have to be ruled out before making a diagnosis of JDM, suc

[Juvenile dermatomyositis].

Juvenile dermatomyositis is the most common idiopathic inflammatory myopathy in children, and presents a heterogeneous group of subacute, chronic and acute diseases of skeletal muscles. Its unique presentation is marked with characteristic skin rushes and progressive muscle weakness. JDM is clinically distinct from adult dermatomyositis, because it is a systemic vasculopathy not associated with malignancy and it often overlaps with other chronic childhood inflammatory diseases. Although immunopathology of JDM is complex, new studies are completing our knowledge of disease pathogenesis. Cortico
