Isolation and characterization of flagellar filament from zoospores of Dermatophilus congolensis.

Highly motile zoospores from Dermatophilus congolensis bovine isolates from clinical dermatophilosis in Japan were obtained by culturing at 27°C in an ambient atmosphere on heart infusion agar supplemented with 5% defibrinated sheep blood for 72h or in heart infusion broth for 48h with gentle shaking. After vigorous mechanical agitation of the zoospore suspension, the flagellar filaments detached from motile zoospores and were isolated in the clear gelatinous part of the final pellet by differential centrifugation. Typical morphology of a flagellar filament, with a width of approximately 15nm,…

A Rare Cause of Folliculitis by Dermatophilus congolensis in a Tropical Martial Arts Fighter.

BACKGROUND: Dermatophilus congolensis, a Gram-positive actinomycete, is a well-known animal pathogen but a rare cause of human skin infections. Human dermatophilosis is an infection associated with tropical environments and animal contact that remains frequently underdiagnosed. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of recurrent folliculitis in a 34-year-old male Muay Thai fighter returning from Thailand to Spain. The patient presented with pustular lesions on his lower limbs following frequent leg shaving and close physical contact during training. Microbiological culture from skin swabs yielde…

Experimental subcutaneous granulomas in sheep with Dermatophilus-like microorganisms from porcine tonsil.

The pathogenicity of the Dermatophilus-like microorganisms from porcine tonsil and the light and electron microscopic findings were studied with adult ewes. The early lesions were abscessess and advanced ones were granulomas after the subcutaneous inoculation. The granulomas were composed of the central bacterial colonies and the layers of the neutrophils, epithelioid cells and giant cells, and peripheral connective tissues. Epithelioid cells and giant cells were identified by the large euchromatic nuclei, abundant organelles and interdigitation of the blunt pseudopods in the ultrastructure. T…

An indirect fluorescent antibody technique for detection of anti-Dermatophilus congolensis antibodies in sheep.

An indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) technique has been developed for detection of anti-Dermatophilus antibodies in sheep. Sera from 25 bacteriologically confirmed clinically affected sheep and from 10 negative non affected lambs were used. Whole cell antigen from brain heart infusion cultures of D. congolensis was used and all sera were tested in the same way for cross-reactivity against antigens obtained from cultures of Actinomyces viscosus, Micrococcus luteus, Nocardia asteroides, and Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis. Sera from Dermatophilus-infected sheep gave positive results with D.…

[A case of cutaneous actinomycosis (streptothricosis) in cattle, caused by dermatophilus congolensis (author's transl)].

A skin condition in cattle, associated with crusted lesions on the back, flanks, neck, head and skin of the udder was found to be cutaneous actinomycosis (streptothricosis) caused by D. congolensis, which is common in tropical regions during the rainy season. This actinomycete was isolated for the first time from cattle in the Netherlands in the case reported. Data culled from the literature as well as the diagnosis and treatment of the patient are discussed.

Morphology of experimental actinomycotic abscess in mice with Dermatophilus-like microorganisms from porcine tonsil.

Experimental infection in mice with Dermatophilus (D.) congolensis-like microorganisms was carried out, intraperitoneally and subcutaneously. This strain had been isolated from porcine tonsil and reported to be different in some morphological and biological points from D. congolensis. Macroscopic examination revealed multiple abscesses in the peritoneal cavities, or subcutaneous abscesses after the intraperitoneal or subcutaneous injection respectively. Histopathologic examination revealed the characteristic arrangement of the neutrophils surrounding the bacterial colony and peripheral macroph…

Comprehensive Molecular Dissection of Dermatophilus congolensis Genome and First Observation of tet(Z) Tetracycline Resistance.

Dermatophilus congolensis is a bacterial pathogen mostly of ruminant livestock in the tropics/subtropics and certain temperate climate areas. It causes dermatophilosis, a skin disease that threatens food security by lowering animal productivity and compromising animal health and welfare. Since it is a prevalent infection in ruminants, dermatophilosis warrants more research. There is limited understanding of its pathogenicity, and as such, there is no registered vaccine against D. congolensis. To better understanding the genomics of D. congolensis, the primary aim of this work was to investigat…

In vitro studies of Dermatophilus congolensis antimicrobial susceptibility by determining minimal inhibitory and bacteriocidal concentrations.

The Minimal Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimal Bacteriocidal Concentration (MBC) of 19 antimicrobials on 16 isolates of D. congolensis were determined. The potential field efficacy of the agents was evaluated by comparing the results with serum levels of drug unbound to proteins and the in vitro and in vivo findings of other authors. A modified standard microtechnique was used for serial dilution-antimicrobial sensitivity and found to be easy and reproducible. Erythromycin, spiramycin, penicillin G, ampicillin, chloramphenicol, the streptomycin, amoxicillin, the tetracyclines and novob

Draft Genome Sequences of 40 Dermatophilus congolensis Isolates from Bovine Dermatophilosis Cases in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Dermatophilus congolensis causes dermatophilosis in cattle, mainly in tropical climates. Despite the economic losses caused by this bacterium, its pathogenic factors are less well understood. We report draft genomes of D. congolensis strains isolated during a dermatophilosis outbreak in cattle in St. Kitts and Nevis. Some isolates contain tet(Z), which is responsible for resistance to tetracyclines.

Severe generalized skin lesions due to mixed infection with Sporothrix schenkii and Dermatophilus congolensis in a bull from Jos, Nigeria.

Sporothrix schenkii and Dermatophilus congolensis were isolated from a bull with severe generalized skin lesions. The lesions were thick, crusty and scabby on the dorsal part while few scabby and several nodular lesions were seen on the lower limbs especially the thighs. Scab samples and exudates from the nodules were aseptically collected and processed for bacteriology and mycology. Gram stained smears revealed Gram-positive, filamentous organism that had longitudinal and transverse septa suggestive of D. congolensis. Colonies on 5% defibrinated sheep blood agar were small, rough, grayish-whi…

Human infections with Dermatophilus sp.: travel-associated first case and a local cluster in the context of emerging European outbreaks, Basel, Switzerland, 2025 to 2026.

We report six human Dermatophilus infections diagnosed in Basel between May 2025 and March 2026. The travel-associated first case developed a pustular rash and conjunctivitis after a stay in Thailand. A second imported case occurred after travel to Indonesia. Four subsequent locally acquired cases presented with genital or inguinal folliculitis-like lesions without reported animal contact. Whole-genome sequencing placed all isolates in a monophyletic cluster within the D. congolensis_A lineage, supporting possible human-to-human transmission. Enhanced surveillance and molecular diagnostics are…
