[Diamond-Blackfan anemia. Case report].

Diamond-blakfan anemia (DBA) is a rare condition in pediatric pathology, with more than 500 cases described in literature. It is a congenital eritroblastopenia, with AD/AR/ X-linkage inheritance, 90% were diagnosed by one year of age. Physical appearances were abnormal only in 29%. The current recommendations are corticosteroids, with suportive treatment and bone marrow transplantation. In general, DBA remains a single cytopenia. Long term prognosis remains uncertain, DBA is a preleukemia condition. We present two cases that we took care of in our clinics.

Diamond-Blackfan Anaemia: an overview.

Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA) is a congenital disease characterised by defective erythroid progenitor maturation. It is usually diagnosed during the first year of life. The main clinical sign is profound isolated normochromic or macrocytic anaemia, with normal numbers and function of the other haemopoietic cells. Reticulocyte counts in patients with DBA are very low. Bone marrow reflects the defective erythropoiesis, showing a very low number of erythropoietic precursors and a reduction of erythroid burst-forming unit progenitor cells. The proliferation and differentiation of the other lineag

Diamond-blackfan anemia in pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Diamond-Blackfan anemia is a rare form of congenital red-cell aplasia. Approximately 90% of the patients are diagnosed by 1 year of age. This report presents two pregnancies with good outcomes in a patient over a period of 1.5 years. CASE: The patient, a 20-year-old woman, was diagnosed with Diamond-Blackfan anemia at age 3.5 months. Treatments consisted of red blood cell transfusions and oral corticosteroids. She conceived at age 18 years and delivered prematurely at 34 weeks' gestation. Her second pregnancy was diagnosed 4 months after delivery of the first child, and she delive

[Vitamin status of diamond cutters].

Workers engaged in industrial treatment of diamonds manifested deficient supply of ascorbic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, pyridoxine and niacin in spring and autumn. This was ascertained on the basis of studying actual nutrition and specific indicators of the content of vitamins or their catabolites in the urine and blood and determination of metabolic functions of some vitamin-dependent enzymes.

Osteogenic sarcoma associated with Diamond-Blackfan anemia: a report from the Diamond-Blackfan Anemia Registry.

PURPOSE: Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a congenital pure red cell aplasia, usually presenting in infancy or early childhood. A review of the literature strongly supports a predisposition to hematopoietic malignancy. Recently, solid tumors have been reported, some attributable to hemosiderosis and/or androgen therapy. Two cases of osteogenic sarcoma have also been documented. An analysis from the Diamond-Blackfan Anemia Registry was performed to evaluate the cancer risk in patients with DBA. METHODS: The Diamond-Blackfan Anemia Registry of North America (DBAR) is a comprehensive database of

The soft tissue healing diamond (ST-Diamond) concept: A translational framework for tendon and ligament regeneration.

BACKGROUND: The diamond concept, originally articulated for bone fracture healing, defines five essential and interdependent elements for successful repair: growth factors, an osteoconductive scaffold, mesenchymal progenitor cells, an optimal mechanical environment, and adequate vascularisation. Tendons and ligaments are dense, hypovascular collagenous tissues with limited intrinsic regenerative capacity. When injured, they heal by biomechanically inferior fibrotic scarring rather than by regeneration. No unifying biological framework currently exists to guide the development of biological aug

Variable clinical presentation of Shwachman-Diamond syndrome: update from the North American Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Registry.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the range of clinical presentations for Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) with the long-term goal of improving diagnosis. STUDY DESIGN: We reviewed the North American Shwachman-Diamond Syndrome Registry. Genetic reports of biallelic Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome mutations confirming the diagnosis of SDS were available for 37 patients. RESULTS: Neutropenia was the most common hematologic abnormality at presentation (30/37, 81%); however, only 51% (19/37) of patients presented with the classic combination of neutropenia and steatorrhea. Absence of pancreatic lipom

[Shwachman-Diamond syndrome--a diagnostic challenge].

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome is a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the SBDS gene. The cardinal symptoms arise from exocrine pancreatic insufficiency and bone marrow dysfunction. These lead to malabsorption and haematological abnormalities, susceptibility to infections and to increased risk of leukaemia. Skeletal involvement presents as growth failure, metaphyseal dysplasia and osteoporosis. The majority of patients also have liver dysfunction, learning difficulties and oral and dental problems. Although the disease typically presents in early childhood, phenotypic feature

Postmortem diagnosis of Diamond-Blackfan anemia.

Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare etiology for congenital anemia, but this diagnosis should be considered when aregenerative hypoplastic anemia occurs in infancy. A term infant girl received a red blood cell transfusion at birth for neonatal anemia (hemoglobin 75 g/L) initially attributed to abruptio placentae. There were no additional investigations. Hemoglobin gradually decreased during the first 4 weeks of life, leading to severe anemia and death despite transfusions. A postmortem diagnosis of DBA was made by extraction of DNA collected on blood filter paper showing a deletion in RPS1

Diamond-Blackfan syndrome in adult patients.

Two adults with pure red cell aplasia are described. No extrinsic etiologic mechanisms were identified. Evidence of anemia was long-standing and varied in severity. Musculoskeletal abnormalities (webbed neck, Sprengel's and Klippel-Feil deformities, and hand abnormalities) were similar to those seen in the congenital form of red cell aplasia (Diamond-Blackfan syndrome). As in the congenital variety, adrenal cortical steroids resulted in hematologic repair. These observations suggest that congenital (Diamond-Blackfan) pure red cell aplasia may be first recognized in adulthood and that steroids

Ataluren-driven restoration of Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome protein function in Shwachman-Diamond syndrome bone marrow cells.

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is a rare inherited recessive disease mainly caused by mutations in the Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome (SBDS) gene, which encodes for the homonymous protein SBDS, whose function still remains to be fully established. SDS affects several organs causing bone marrow failure, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, skeletal malformations, and cognitive disorders. About 15% of SDS patients develop myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and are at higher risk of developing acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Deficiency in SBDS expression has been associated with increased apoptosis

Diamond Formation at Superlubric Sliding Interface.

Until now, all carbons (solids, liquids, and gases) prefer to graphitize at moving mechanical interfaces. The reverse evolution toward diamond is generally not possible at the interfaces due to high activation and kinetic barriers (Diamond can be grown only at pressures of 5-6 GPa and temperatures of 900°C-1400°C). Here, we report diamond formation at superlubric sliding interfaces (coefficient of friction 0.008), breaking this pattern. This is accomplished by the van der Waals encapsulation of carbonaceous wear debris, when sliding Al2O3 balls against MoS2-coated amorphous carbon surfaces. At
