Cutaneous diphtheria, frequently seen in tropical areas, is uncommon in developed countries. As seen in the recent epidemics in western countries, where it turned out to be an important factor of dissemination, there is a persisting risk of diphtheria. A perfect knowledge of the clinical manifestations and factors of risk and consequent vaccination is necessary to eradicate diphtheria.

Ten years ago the incidence of diphtheria was relatively high in Greece and a survey of school children had revealed a carrier prevalence of non-toxigenic Corynebacterium diphtheriae of 3,4%. A similar survey undertaken now has revealed that the disease seems to be disappearing. Among 895 school children (6-13 years-old) in seven primary schools of different socioeconomic levels, only seven were carriers of non-toxigenic C. diphtheriae strains, corresponding to a prevalence of 0.8%. Toxigenic strains were not found. All carriers were pupils of the same school, and the carrier state was more fr…

A seven week old infant developed pharyngeal diphtheria. The child quickly deteriorated with severe dyspnea and bradycardia. These symptoms made endotracheal intubation necessary. The pharynx and the larynx were covered with pseudomembranes. At the fourth day of hospital stay antitoxin has been administrated. At first the condition of the child became much better. Then progredient paralysis of the diaphragm occurred and led again to intubation. The neurologic complications resolved completely. Diphtheria--above all in an infant--is a rare disease. Our report shows, that it has to be kept in mi…
