OBJECTIVE: In view of the amateur fishing practices and the importance of salmonids in the region the study sets out to detect human hosts in the Andean-Patagonian zone.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Information campaigns were carried out by Clinical Analysis Laboratories of Andean Patagonia between 1986 and 1995 to detect diphyllobothriasis more efficiently by means of coproparasitological analysis.
RESULTS: Further, forms were prepared for the collection of information about infection, treatment and the characteristics of the human host. During this period 13 new cases were registered either throug…

A considerable decrease in lysozime activity has been detected in the serum of patients with diphyllobothriasis especially in the early period of invasion. A 13-20-fold increase in enzyme activity has been found in the urine of patients, which disappeared 1 month after treatment, indicating the normalization of the immune status after the recovery from diphyllobothriasis. The index of lysozyme activity may be used in combination with other tests for the evaluation of the treatment efficacy.

BACKGROUND: Diphyllobothriasis is estimated to afflict 10-20 million people worldwide; however, this is the first case reported in a United States military aviator. Among the largest parasites of humans, the "fish tapeworm" grows from 2-15 m in length, can live >20 yr in the intestines, and is contracted through consumption of uncooked, unfrozen freshwater or anadromous fish species.
CASE REPORT: A 32-yr-old male F-22 pilot presented with mild stomach cramping, bloating, nausea, and intermittent loose stools. Symptoms were relieved with bismuth subsalicylate until several days later when the …

We describe a case of asymptomatic infection caused by Diphyllobothrium latum, probably following a meal of "sushi" in a Japanese restaurant in Rome one year before. The diagnosis was obtained observing morphology and seizures of proglottids and ova. We recall the life cycle of this cestode and report criteria for a differential diagnosis with other species of the Diphyllobothrium genus, usually rare in humans, and caused by the ingestion of marine fish and not freshwater fish.

The author describes a case of imported diphylobothriosis in a Czechoslovak citizen who returned after a 6-month stay from Finland. The tapeworm Diphylobothrium latum is bound in its life cycle to aqueous crustaceans and fish. Man is infected by ingestion of inadequately thermally processed fish. The author draws attention to the possible import of this uncommon parasitosis.

The analysis of the literary data has shown that the population of the Far East is infected not with D. latum, as in other areas of the disease distribution, but with the Far Eastern tapeworm type D. klebanovskii. The final hosts of the parasite are the representatives of the Carnivora order, while the additional hosts are fish of Oncorhynchus and Salvelinus genera. Helminthiasis foci are localized in seaside biotopes on the Sea of Japan, the Sea of Okhotsk and the Bering Sea. The remaining area of the disease distribution, including Maritime and Khabarovsk Territory, Sakhalin and Kamchatka re
