Novel dolphin morbillivirus epizootic in stranded striped dolphins in the western Mediterranean Sea, 2025.

Dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) epizootics have recurrently occurred in the western Mediterranean Sea since the first reported outbreak in 1990-1992. In August-November 2025, 5 stranded striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba were diagnosed with systemic DMV infection in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea. Dolphins were thin, and 4 of them had typical viral lesions of bronchiolointerstitial pneumonia, lymphoid depletion, and encephalitis. RT-PCR for DMV was positive in at least 2 organs in all dolphins, and viral antigen was detected by immunohistochemistry in 4 dolphins. Four dolphins died due to morbi…

Dolphins, sharks, and barnacles: Use of photographs to examine intra- and inter-specific interactions in bottlenose dolphins in Mozambique.

Understanding interactions within and between species is crucial to ecological research. However, for cetaceans such interactions can be difficult to observe in the field. Photographs offer an opportunity to study intra- and inter-specific interactions, by capturing 'snapshots' of their occurrence over space and time. At-surface and underwater photographs of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) inhabiting Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve (PPMR), Mozambique, were used to examine evidence of interactions with other dolphins, predators and ectoparasites. Intra-specific scarring levels signi…

Herpesvirus surveillance in stranded striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) from Italy with emphasis on neuropathological characterization.

Herpesvirus (HV) is widely distributed among cetacean populations, with the highest prevalence reported in the Mediterranean Sea. In this st … ted in calves or neonates. The affected species were striped (Stenella coeruleoalba) and bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The highest positivity rates were observed in the genital system, cerebrum, and skin tissues. Phylogenetic analysis indicated a higher occurrence of Gammaherpesvirus (GHV) sequences but increased genetic diversity within Alphah …

Endoscopic Study of the Oral and Pharyngeal Cavities in the Common Dolphin, Striped Dolphin, Risso's Dolphin, Harbour Porpoise and Pilot Whale: Reinforced with Other Diagnostic and Anatomic Techniques.

In this work, the fetal and newborn anatomical structures of the dolphin oropharyngeal cavities were studied. The main technique used was endoscopy, as these cavities are narrow tubular spaces and the oral cavity is difficult to photograph without moving the specimen. The endoscope was used to study the mucosal features of the oral and pharyngeal cavities. Two pharyngeal diverticula of the auditory tubes were discovered on either side of the choanae and larynx. These spaces begin close to the musculotubaric channel of the middle ear, are linked to the pterygopalatine recesses (pterygoid sinus)

Do shortfin mako Isurus oxyrinchus hunt dolphins actively?

Direct evidence of shark predation on cetaceans is scarce, making it difficult to differentiate between stomach contents that have been scav … ako. These findings highlight the opportunistic nature of shortfin mako, which may prey on juvenile dolphins under certain ecological conditions, providing new insights into their feeding behaviour and trophic ecology.

Aquatic environments change the cardiac morphology of dolphins.

Previous studies on dolphin electrocardiograms have shown that they are mainly composed of increased negative waves, similar to ungulates. The electrocardiogram waveform was determined by the distribution of the Purkinje fibers. Based on the waveform of the dolphin electrocardiogram, Hamlin predicted that the Purkinje fibers would be distributed within the ventricular muscle, as in ungulates. The purpose of this study was to confirm the histological distribution of Purkinje fibers in dolphins. In the present study, bottlenose dolphin hearts were observed both grossly and histologically, and th…

Pathological Findings in White-Beaked Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) and Atlantic White-Sided Dolphins (Lagenorhynchus acutus) From the South-Eastern North Sea.

In the North Sea, white-beaked dolphins (Lagenorhynchus albirostris) occur regularly and are the second most common cetacean in the area, while their close relative, the Atlantic white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus acutus), prefers the deeper waters of the northern North Sea and adjacent Atlantic Ocean. Though strandings of both species have occurred regularly in the past three decades, they have decreased in the southern North Sea during the last years. Studies describing necropsy findings in stranded Lagenorhynchus spp. are, to date, still scarce, while information gained through post-mortem…

Novel Dolphin Tupavirus from Stranded Atlantic White-Sided Dolphin with Severe Encephalitis, Canada, 2024.

We sequenced a novel rhabdovirus, Tupavirus delphini (dolphin tupavirus), from the brain of a stranded dead Atlantic white-sided dolphin with severe encephalitis in Canada. In situ hybridization linked presence of the virus to the animal's brain pathology and death. Our findings underscore the importance of monitoring marine mammals for unexpected pathogens.

Genome sequence of Fraser's dolphin morbillivirus isolated from a stranded Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) in Hawai'i.

Over the past three decades, cetacean morbilliviruses (CeMVs) have emerged as significant pathogens affecting cetacean populations worldwide. Here, we report the genome sequence of a new CeMV, designated Fraser's dolphin morbillivirus (FDMV), isolated from a stranded Fraser's dolphin (Lagenodelphis hosei) in Hawai'i in 2018. Next-generation sequencing facilitated recovery of the nearly complete FDMV genome (15,685 bp), and annotation indicated a genomic organization similar to that of other morbilliviruses, including six open reading frames. Genetic analysis of the FDMV RNA-dependent RNA polym

Offset auditory brainstem response (ABR) amplitude in bottlenose dolphins.

Although commonly recorded as onset responses, the auditory brainstem response (ABR) can also be elicited at stimulus offset. The offset ABR has not been extensively investigated in marine mammals. Three normal hearing (NH) and three hearing impaired (HI) dolphins were assessed while fully submerged in sea water. Stimulus spectrum, level, rise/fall time (RFT), and plateau duration were manipulated. Onset and offset ABR amplitude were quantified as the rms voltage 1-7 ms following stimulus onset or offset, respectively. For the same stimulus conditions, onset and offset responses were often lar…

Lobomycosis: risk of zoonotic transmission from dolphins to humans.

Lobomycosis, a fungal disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissues caused by Lacazia loboi, is sometimes referred to as a zoonotic disease because it affects only specific delphinidae and humans; however, the evidence that it can be transferred directly to humans from dolphins is weak. Dolphins have also been postulated to be responsible for an apparent geographic expansion of the disease in humans. Morphological and molecular differences between the human and dolphin organisms, differences in geographic distribution of the diseases between dolphins and humans, the existence of only a single d…

[Mechanisms of sound reception and conduction in a dolphin].

Morphology of a lower jaw, model and behavioral experiments are discussed with the aim of exploring the mechanisms of sound reception and conduction to the dolphin's lower jaw canals taking into account known concepts of acoustics and a theory of group antennas. It is shown that the left and right row of mental foramens with the respective mandibular canal and tissues of the canals are forming the new outer ear and the new external auditory canal by which the sound (in frequency band of 0.1-160 kHz) is transmitted into the middle ear, in contrast to the dolphin's non-functional outer ear. This

Standardization of Dolphin Cardiac Auscultation and Characterization of Heart Murmurs in Managed and Free-Ranging Bottlenose Dolphins (Tursiops truncatus).

Cardiac auscultation is an important, albeit underutilized tool in aquatic animal medicine due to the many challenges associated with in-water examinations. The aims of this prospective study were to (1) establish an efficient and repeatable in-water cardiac auscultation technique in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), (2) describe the presence and characterization of heart murmurs detected in free-ranging and managed dolphins, and (3) characterize heart murmur etiology through echocardiography in free-ranging dolphins. For technique development, 65 dolphins cared for by the Navy Marine …

Serologic response in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus infected with Brucella sp. using a dolphin-specific indirect ELISA.

Marine-origin Brucella infections and serologic evidence of exposure have been documented in multiple cetacean species. A dolphin-specific indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was developed to screen bottlenose dolphin sera for anti-Brucella antibodies. A total of 131 serum samples collected over a 2 to 18 yr period from 6 bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus with confirmed Brucella infections were analyzed for the presence and magnitude of antibody titers against marine-origin Brucella to compare individual antibody responses to various disease manifestations. Additionally, an…
