Anencephalus and drinking water composition.

The mortality rate (stillbirths and infant deaths) from anencephalus from 1950-1969 in 36 cities of over 50,000 population in Canada showed a negative association (r = -.39) with the concentration of magnesium in water sampled at domestic taps. The mortality rates showed negative associations with mean income and longitude, and a multiple regression model using the three factors showed significant effects of each and accounted for 69% of the intercity variation in rates. There were no significant associations seen with water calcium concentration or total hardness. Income, magnesium and longit

Water-intake volume regulation in the rat: schedule-induced drinking compared with water-deprivation-induced drinking.

Hungry rats drink extremely large amounts of water when they are intermittently fed small amount of food (schedule-induced polydipsia). Are such animals motivated to drink for long durations, to ingest large amounts of fluid, or to do both? When drinking-tube apertures were decreased to slow the rate of water ingestion, each of eight rats spent more time drinking (M = 11.5 min) than when larger apertures were used (M = 7.8 min). The mean volumes ingested were not different. These equal volumes were generated by adjustment of each drink duration in accordance with ingestion rate even during the

[Pollution of drinking water by tetrachloroethylene].

At the end of the year 1983 and at the beginning of 1984, groundwater contamination with tetrachloroethylene was discovered south of Graz. M … le was taken. In all other cases of liver disease, the causes could be determined. The pollution of drinking water was not the cause of pathological LFT. Nevertheless, the inhabitants of this region will receive drinking water from the public water supply for safety reasons. However, one thing that needs to be stated very clearly is that these findings which for …

Hygiene aspects of drinking water ultrafiltration.

Ultrafiltration is highly effective method for removal of bacteria and viruses and does not produce organohalides associated with water treatment by chlorine gas. The aim was to assess the hygiene suitability of the unit for possible use in bottled water production. The ultrafiltration unit was in operation for 220 hours with simulated of varying duration. The running time (220 hours) and shut-down duration (to 5 hours) did not in any way influence the effectiveness of the module (100% filtration of aerobic colony count at 37 degrees C and 22 degrees C).

[Actual standards for drinking water quality].

Actual recommendations concerning drinking water quality are presented in WHO "Guidelines for drinking water quality" published in 1992. Regulations which are obligatory in the European Union countries are published in Directive 80/778/EEC. In 1995 a proposal of a new Directive was elaborated. In Poland the regulations given in the disposition of MZiOS (Ministry of Health and Social Welfare)-Dz. U. nr 18 poz. 72 of 1977 with later changes-Dz.U. nr 35 poz. 205 of 1990 are obligatory. At present this disposition is under revision: Comparison of above mentioned regulations of EU and WHO with Poli…

Chemical contamination of California drinking water.

Drinking water contamination by toxic chemicals has become widely recognized as a public health concern since the discovery of 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane in California's Central Valley in 1979. Increased monitoring since then has shown that other pesticides and industrial chemicals are present in drinking water. Contaminants of drinking water also include naturally occurring substances such as asbestos and even the by-products of water chlorination. Public water systems, commercially bottled and vended water and mineral water are regulated, and California is also taking measures to prevent wa…

Drinking water contaminants and childhood leukemia.

We conducted a population-based case-control study to evaluate the relation between exposure to drinking water contaminants (total and specific trihalomethanes and certain metals and nitrates) and childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia. We compared 491 cases 0-9 years of age with 491 controls. We developed a municipality-exposure matrix based on municipal and provincial historical data, a tapwater survey in 227 homes, and information about residential history. We used average level of exposure and cumulative average over the period as exposure indices, and we measured risk for the pregnancy pe…

Excessive water drinking behavior in autism.

The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of polydipsia in 49 autistic children, and also the influence of psychotropic drugs and residential factors on water drinking behavior, as compared with in 89 mentally retarded children, in schools for mentally handicapped children in Fukui prefecture. Questionnaires were used to detect polydipsia and to assess the severity of the water drinking behavior in the autistic children and mentally retarded children. The incidence of polydipsia in the autistic children tended to be higher (P = 0.074) than that in the retarded children. The severity

Refractive Errors in Northern China Between the Residents with Drinking Water Containing Excessive Fluorine and Normal Drinking Water.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the refractive errors and the demographic associations between drinking water with excessive fluoride and normal drinking water among residents in Northern China. Of the 1843 residents, 1415 (aged ≥40 years) were divided into drinking-water-excessive fluoride (DWEF) group (>1.20 mg/L) and control group (≤1.20 mg/L) on the basis of the fluoride concentrations in drinking water. Of the 221 subjects in the DWEF group, with 1.47 ± 0.25 mg/L (fluoride concentrations in drinking water), the prevalence rates of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism were 38.5 % (…

QMRA of adenovirus in drinking water at a drinking water treatment plant using UV and chlorine dioxide disinfection.

According to the Dutch Drinking Water Act of 2011, Dutch drinking water suppliers must conduct a Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) for infection by the following index pathogens: enterovirus, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium and Giardia at least once every four years in order to assess the microbial safety of drinking water. The health-based target for safe drinking water is set at less than one infection per 10 000 persons per year. At Evides Water Company, concern has arisen whether their drinking water treatment, mainly based on UV inactivation and chlorine dioxide, reduces levels…

Residential history and drinking water type as predictors of serum PFAS in communities with a history of contaminated drinking water.

BACKGROUND: Drinking water is a major source of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) exposure in contaminated communities. Even after mitigation, residents may still have elevated serum PFAS levels; however, duration of elevated body burdens and influence of drinking water type (unfiltered tap, filtered tap, bottled) are poorly characterized. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate associations of residential history and drinking water type with serum PFAS among individuals living in communities with historical drinking water contamination. METHODS: The Massachusetts (MA) PFAS & Your Health Study is part o…

Drinking cholera: salinity levels and palatability of drinking water in coastal Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the salinity levels of common water sources in coastal Bangladesh and explore perceptions of water palatability among the local population to investigate the plausibility of linking cholera outbreaks in Bangladesh with ingestion of saline-rich cholera-infected river water. METHODS: Hundred participants took part in a taste-testing experiment of water with varying levels of salinity. Salinity measurements were taken of both drinking and non-drinking water sources. Informal group discussions were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of water sources and water uses.…

Study of water treatment effects on organic volatiles in drinking water.

Volatile organics were determined during all stages of the water treatment process in a municipal water works. Analytical parameters for a quantitative procedure were investigated. The method used allows simultaneous determination of both halogenated and non-halogenated purgeable organics. Approximately 70 substances were identified by gas chromatography--mass spectrometry with capillary columns. Well water contained considerable quantities of aliphatic and aromatic substances. Halocarbons were formed during both steps of a double chlorination procedure, but the largest quantity was generated

Iodine supplementation and drinking-water perchlorate mitigation.

Ensuring adequate iodine intake is important, particularly among women of reproductive age, because iodine is necessary for early life devel … e at current regulatory limits among at risk individuals. The human health risks from supplementing drinking water with iodine are negligible; therefore, this approach is worthy of regulatory consideration.
