The Impact of Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs on U.S. Opioid Prescriptions.

This paper seeks to understand the treatment effect of Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) on opioid prescription rates. Using county-level panel data on all opioid prescriptions in the U.S. between 2006 and 2015, we investigate whether state interventions like PDMPs have heterogeneous treatment effects at the sub-state level, based on regional and temporal variations in policy design, extent of urbanization, race, and income. Our models comprehensively control for a set of county and time fixed effects, countyspecific and time-varying demographic controls, potentially endogenous tim

Psychotropic drug prescriptions for elderly patients in a general hospital.

A survey was made of drug prescriptions written for all medical/surgical patients in a general hospital on a single weekday in 1978. Of these 348 patients, 195 were over the age of 60. In this elderly group, 62 (32 percent) were receiving psychoactive drugs. Flurazepam was the drug most commonly prescribed (in 63 percent of the patients). Diazepam was the most frequently prescribed nonhypnotic psychoactive drug (in 29 percent). Neuroleptic drugs and phenothiazine anti-emetics (in 52 percent) were not prescribed for psychosis but for augmenting analgesia and sedation and for reducing nausea. Th…

Opioid-involved prescription drug misuse and poly-prescription drug misuse in U.S. older adults.

OBJECTIVES: Although older adult prescription drug misuse (PDM) is associated with concerning consequences, stimulant PDM and poly- PDM involving multiple medication classes each remain understudied. Our objectives were to examine PDM and poly-PDM prevalence by medication class in US older adults and to identify the mental health, SUD, and health-related quality-of-life correlates of poly-PDM. METHOD: Data were from adults 50 and older completing the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III, (N = 14,667). Prevalence of PDM and poly-PDM by medication class was estima

Relationships between prescription and non-prescription drug use in an elderly population.

This paper explores, at an epidemiological level, the relationship between categories of over-the-counter (OTC) and prescribed (Rx) drugs in a community-resident elderly population. A total of 2818, randomly selected, older adults were interviewed at home about their use of prescribed and non-prescribed medication and other health-related factors. For comparative purposes OTC drugs were classified into 16 therapeutic groups-identical to those used by other researchers; prescribed drugs were classified into 45 British National Formulary (BNF) therapeutic sub-categories. Analyses revealed signif

Drug prescriptions in nursing home residents: an Italian multicenter observational study.

PURPOSE: Pharmacoepidemiological studies aimed to distinguish drug use in nursing home (NH) residents with and without dementia could be use … common in NH residents with and without dementia. CONCLUSIONS: The wide variability between NHs in drug prescriptions and potentially inappropriate prescribing suggests the need to recommend a standardized approach to medication review of psychotropic drugs, antiulcer, laxatives, and antiplatelets in this complex and vulnerable population.

Navigating the Prescription Drug Information System.

Information on new prescription drugs is increasingly complex and fragmented, posing challenges for healthcare professionals, patients, and payers. Clinicians require concise, actionable guidance to support prescribing decisions, while patients seek to balance benefits and harms when making decisions aligned with their treatment goals. Payers need comparative effectiveness data to inform coverage decisions that shape access and resource allocation. However, inadequacies in drug information communication often lead to overestimation of benefits and underestimation of harms. In this White Paper,

Prescription Drug Misuse and Arrest History.

BACKGROUND: Prescription drug misuse is widely acknowledged as a major public health issue in the United States. Surprisingly little research examines the association between prescription drug misuse and history of arrest among adults. METHODS: We use data from the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to examine this association. Arrest was self-reported and separated into three categories: any, property crime, or violent crime. Prescription drug misuse was defined as use without a prescription or solely for the feeling or experience caused by the drug. We looked at the misuse of any p

[Use of prescription drugs in Spain and Europe].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the Spanish prescription drug consumption with that of European countries. DESIGN: A review of the literature and data sources for prescription drug consumption. SETTING: European countries; last three decades. PARTICIPANTS: Included therapeutic groups where the available information allowed a comparison of the consumption in Spain with that of other European countries. MEASUREMENTS: Studies, reports, or data sources were included in which the consumption was expressed in DHD (DDD/1000 inhabitants per day). RESULTS: It was possible to compare 18 therapeutic groups: d

Subtypes of nonmedical prescription drug misuse.

This study used three characteristics (i.e., motive, route of administration, and co-ingestion with alcohol) of nonmedical prescription drug misuse across four separate classes (i.e., pain, sedative/anxiety, sleeping, and stimulant medications) to examine subtypes and drug related problems. A Web survey was self-administered by a randomly selected sample of 3639 undergraduate students attending a large midwestern 4-year U.S. university. Self-treatment subtypes were characterized by motives consistent with the prescription drug's pharmaceutical main indication, oral only routes of administratio

Prescription drug abuse. A question of balance.

The current American medical practice paradox of concomitant overprescribing and underprescribing of controlled drugs is within the power of physicians to correct. It requires actively seeking education in traditionally neglected areas and avoiding prescribing controlled drugs to patients with either substance abuse histories or vague clinical indications. Attempts to limit prescribing to short therapeutic time courses, refusal to prescribe if pushed, and careful chart documentation practices are important. By increasing knowledge about chemical dependence and about chemically dependent patien

Cyclical variation in psychotropic drug prescription.

In this study it is shown that drug prescription is subject to cyclical variation throughout the year, but that the patterns of variation for different types of drug are different. Some of the reasons for, and the implications of, this finding are discussed.

[Antihypertensive drugs in psychiatry : Prescription behavior and potential drug-drug interactions].

BACKGROUND: Patients with mental illnesses are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease-related mortality. Antihypertensive drugs are used particularly for the prophylaxis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. In combination with psychiatric medication there is a potential for interaction, which can impair the achievement of therapeutic goals. OBJECTIVE: The prescription behavior for antihypertensive drugs in psychiatric clinics and practices in German-speaking countries as well as the interaction potential with psychotropic drugs were investigated. METHODS: The AGATE "index day" data

[Prescription of psychotropic drugs off label].

The review was written based on the analysis of available publications (Pubmed, other Internet resources) on the problem of off-label use of drugs. It reveals the concept of off-label prescribing and discusses modern approaches to the use of off-label drugs in domestic psychiatric and addiction practice. The problems of normative substantiation of prescribing off-label drugs are discussed. It has been established that, despite some progress in this matter, for patients in adult psychiatric practice, the use of off-label therapy is carried out only by decision of the medical commission. The iss

Periodontal complications of prescription and recreational drugs.

Drug use for both therapeutic and recreational purposes is very widespread in most societies. The range of drugs used, the variations in response to these drugs and other health and behavioral confounders mean that drug use may be an important contributor to individualized periodontal diagnoses. In this narrative review, we review the main reported effects of drugs on the periodontal tissues and periodontal disease processes. Although some of the more common adverse drug reactions on periodontal tissues are well described, in many other cases the evidence for these drug effects is quite limite
