Using the appropriate instruments and techniques for removing a foreign body from the external auditory canal facilitates the procedure and reduces the risk of complications. Most ear foreign bodies can be addressed on a nonurgent basis, but batteries and caustic materials warrant prompt removal. Referral to an otolaryngologist should be considered for difficult cases or after a failed attempt.

Out of all benign tumors of the ceruminous glands, syringocystadenoma papilliferum is the rarest and represents only 2% of cases. It is an extremely rare benign tumor that originates from modified apocrine sweat glands. The aim of this paper was to present, according to our findings, the 18th case of syringocystadenoma papilliferum in the external auditory canal, with a detailed review of its clinical, radiological and histomorphological characteristics. A 59-year-old man reported to our clinic due to a 5×5 mm papillomatous growth at the entrance to the right external auditory canal. Histopath

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous histiocytomas (CH) are derived from epidermal Langerhans cells. Single CH are generally associated with a good prognosis in dogs because most undergo spontaneous remission. However, aggressive behaviour and lymph node metastasis have been reported in a small number of dogs with single CH.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation, treatment and disease progression of an aggressive CH located in the ear canal of a dog.
ANIMAL: An 8-year-old intact male Rottweiler dog.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: A unilateral ear canal mass was identified as a CH on routine haematoxyli

Foreign bodies are commonly seen by the Ear, Nose and Throat emergency team with cotton wool being the most common aural foreign body seen in the adult population. Most complications secondary to aural foreign bodies described in the literature are minor and rarely require any surgical intervention. Here, we present two cases with impacted cotton wool as aural foreign bodies which resulted in suppurative labyrinthitis and osteomyelitis causing profound sensorineural hearing. These cases highlight the importance of considering aural foreign bodies in the differential diagnosis in those presenti

Background. Ewing sarcoma (ES) is a high-grade malignant tumor that has skeletal and extraskeletal forms and consists of small round cells. In the head and neck region, reported localization of extraskeletal ES includes the larynx, thyroid gland, submandibular gland, nasal fossa, pharynx, skin, and parotid gland, but not the external ear canal. Methods. We present the unique case of a 2-year-old boy with extraskeletal ES arising from the external ear canal, mimicking auricular hematoma. Results. Surgery was performed and a VAC/IE (vincristine, adriamycin, cyclophosphamide alternating with ifos

The Koebner phenomenon originally described the appearance of psoriatic lesions in the uninvolved skin of patients with psoriasis as a consequence of trauma. We describe a case of concurrent lichen planus and sarcoidosis in the auditory canal, which represents an unusual manifestation of the Koebner phenomenon. This is the first case of concurrent lichen planus and sarcoidosis in the head and neck region and highlights the need for biopsy to allow accurate histopathological diagnosis and treatment.

Benign osteonecrosis (BON) of the external ear canal (EEC), also termed as focal or circumscribed necrotizing lesion, is an infrequent phenomenon with distinctive features and of an obscure origin. Five patients with BON of the EEC presented with aggressiveness and extension of varying degree including involvement of the middle ear. It seems that the disease might have a self limited course (two patients) though, at times, extensive measures including hyperbarric oxygen therapy (one patient) should be applied.

Objectives: To investigate a temporary threshold shift (TTS) of hearing and pain/discomfort caused by the microsuction procedure. Hearing loss induced by impacted cerumen was also investigated.Design: Impacted cerumen was removed from patients using microsuction. Hearing assessments were carried out before the procedure, immediately after and 1-week later. Hearing thresholds measured in different sessions were compared to determine the TTS caused by the microsuction procedure and hearing loss induced by impacted cerumen. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the pain/discomfort experienced by p

A series of Swedish studies has shown that the application of middle ear over-pressure may be effective in ameliorating the symptoms associated with Meniere's disease. Other studies have shown that electrocochleography (ECochG) is an effective tool in the identification of Meniere's disease, especially in the presence of active symptoms. Based on the therapeutic potential of middle ear overpressure as a treatment for Meniere's symptoms and on the relationship between these symptoms and ECochG, we investigated the effects of ear canal pressure change on human electrocochleographic components in

Otitis media can be a consequence of chronic otitis externa and could represent a perpetuating factor. While the microbiota of the EEC in healthy dogs and in the presence of otitis externa has been described, only sparse information is available concerning the normal microbiota of the middle ear. The objective was to compare the tympanic bulla (TB) with the external ear canal (EEC) microbiota in healthy dogs. Six healthy experimental Beagle dogs were selected based on the absence of otitis externa, negative cytology and bacterial culture from the TB. Samples from the EEC and TB were collected

A soft tissue-filled external ear canal, sometimes also referred to as otitis externa in the veterinary literature, is a prevalent disease in pet rabbits, especially in lop-eared pet rabbits. The authors describe the clinical findings, diagnostic workup, therapy, and outcome of pet rabbits treated surgically for a lateral ear canal ablation (LECA). For the time period between 2015 and 2023, the medical records of two veterinary clinics were evaluated retrospectively. A total of 25 pet rabbits, diagnosed via computed tomography (CT) scans with a soft tissue-filled external ear canal and (if pre

BACKGROUND: Ear canal and middle ear tumors are rare and exhibit variability in histology and clinical manifestation. Surgical resection remains the treatment of choice, but individualized approach is needed to preserve function when possible.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: To review the management and outcome of ear canal and middle ear tumors at an academic referral center.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Helsinki University Hospital (HUS) patient files were searched for clinically and histologically confirmed ear canal and middle ear tumors over a 14-year period. The minimum follow-up time was 2 years.

Calcification of auricular cartilage is a rare condition. This phenomenon might be associated with frostbite, local trauma, inflammation, or systemic diseases. Calcification that progresses to the external ear canal cartilage is even rarer. We present an extremely rare case of bilateral auricular and external ear canal cartilage calcification in a patient with acromegaly. Clinicians should be aware that auricular and external ear canal cartilage calcification can occur in a patient with acromegaly.

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 18-year-old domestic medium-hair cat (cat 1) and a 16-year-old domestic shorthair cat (cat 2) were evaluated because of obstructive skin lesions involving the perimeter of the left external auditory canal.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Otitis externa was present in affected ears secondary to obstructive soft tissue growths involving the outer margin of the external auditory canal and outer third of the vertical ear canal. Histologic examination of a preoperative biopsy sample revealed multiple ulcerated ceruminous gland adenomas in the affected ear of cat 1. Histologic examination o

OBJECTIVE: Accurate ear-canal acoustic measurements, such as wideband acoustic admittance, absorbance, and otoacoustic emissions, require that the measurement probe be tightly sealed in the ear canal. Air leaks can compromise the validity of the measurements, interfere with calibrations, and increase variability. There are no established procedures for determining the presence of air leaks or criteria for what size leak would affect the accuracy of ear-canal acoustic measurements. The purpose of this study was to determine ways to quantify the effects of air leaks and to develop objective crit

The manifestations of multiple myeloma are protean and related to bony osteolytic lesions, and to medullar and renal insufficiency. We report a patient who presented with otalgia as the inaugural symptom of multiple myeloma. Local irradiation combined with systemic chemotherapy led to the disappearance of the temporal bone mass and the accompanying symptoms. To date, 24 months after the diagnosis, the patient is still in remission. The literature on otological involvement in multiple myeloma is reviewed. Symptoms are non-specific and include hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness, facial paralysis,

Herein described is an eight-year-old female patient presenting with bilateral external ear canal duplication and a history of recurrent postauricular abscesses, otorrhea, and moderate left-sided conductive hearing loss. Previous incision and drainage of the postauricular abscesses yielded little long-term success. Medical history was otherwise unremarkable. Physical examination revealed a cystic mass in the right ear and postauricular fibrosis, likely a result of previous surgical interventions. An audiogram revealed asymmetric hearing function, with mild-to-moderate conductive hearing loss i
