The prevalence of larval Echinococcus granulosus in buffaloes, sheep and goats and in adult stray and shepherd dogs was studied in northern India. A total of 48.1% of 754 buffaloes, 30.5% of 1215 sheep and 21.0% of 447 goats were found to be infected with this parasite. The prevalence of infection in buffaloes was higher in older animals than in younger animals. The lungs and livers appeared to be the sites of predilection. A high percentage of cysts from buffaloes (71.1%) were sterile, whereas a high percentage (90.0%) of cysts from sheep and goats were fertile. Shepherd dogs showed a higher …

Both benzimidazoles (albendazole) and isoquineline compounds (praziquantel) have activity against. We reviewed the efficiency of benzimidazo … iveness for both therapeutic and prophylaxis purposes were studied. Albendazole in the treatment of Echinococcus granulosus is shown to be superior to other benzimidazoles and a combination of albendazole and praziquantel is more effective than albendazole alone. Albendazole therapy is associated with a 50% disappearance of cysts and in others has caused shrinkage, cyst …

Parasitic infection by Echinococcus granulosus in humans induces hydatidosis (echinococcosis), which is a zoonotic disease that seriously endangers public health. This study was to determine the status of cell apoptosis in the protoscoleces of E. granulosus, which were isolated from hydatid cysts in livers or lungs of sheep. Those protoscoleces were incubated with drugs (at the concentration of 1 mmol L(-1) H(2)O(2) and 5 mmol L(-1)dexamethasone) for 8 h, the apoptosis were examined by transmission electron microscopy and TUNEL assay, the expression of caspase-1 and caspase-3 were detected by …

The authors report their experience with 6 patients requiring liver transplantation who suffered with liver infestation by Echinococcus granulosus. One patient presented with acute Budd-Chiari syndrome because obstruction of hepatic veins was produced during the first operation; the other 5 patients received liver transplants for terminal chronic liver disease (2 secondary sclerosing cholangitis, 2 secondary biliary cirrhosis, and 1 postnecrotic cirrhosis of the liver). All the patients had been operated previously on for hydatidosis and were at the end of liver functional disorder. Some of th…

A new method called PAIR (Puncture-Aspiration of cyst contents--Injection of hypertonic saline solution--Reaspiration) was used as a percutaneous treatment of hydatid cysts. In 37 patients, 120 cysts were punctured. All patients had not been considered surgical candidates. The cysts were localized in the liver, peritoneum, spleen, kidneys, muscles, and bones. In 70% of patients, good results were obtained. Recurrence occurred in 5 of 120 cysts, all at the beginning of our experience when a low concentration of sodium chloride solution was injected. Moderate allergic reactions occurred during s

Seventy patients with hydatid disease were referred to our institution during the last ten years. In all cases the clinical and radiological findings were confirmed by pathology. In three of seventy patients pleural complications were found consisting in hydropneumothorax and a life-threatening tension pneumothorax following pleural perforation of ruptured pulmonary hydatid cysts in two cases and prolapsed hepatic hydatid cyst in one case. Bronchial rupture with anaphylactic symptoms and collapse occurred in one patient. In another, the pathologic anatomic examination gave clues of an old bili

Cysto-biliary fistulas are commonly diagnosed, either before or after surgical intervention, in patients with enlarged or advanced-stage hydatid cysts (HCs). Analysis of cystic contents in these patients shows that diminished scolex vitality is more common in patients with cysto-biliary fistulas. This study aims to demonstrate the scolicidal effects of bile on Echinococcus granulosus (EG) scolices at various bile concentrations and over specific periods. The time- and concentration-based scolicidal potency was analyzed in EG scolex samples obtained from HC patients. The integrity of the cyst w…

In a five period, year 41 consecutive patients with echinococcosis were studied. Single organ involvement occurred in 34 (82.93%) and multiple organ disease in seven patients (17.07%). Single hepatic involvement, recorded in 15 patients (36.59%) was equal to single pulmonary involvement. This distribution appears to assume an intermediate position between the northern preponderance of hepatic and the southern prevalence of pulmonary echinococcosis in Iran.

Cystic echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. This affliction is an endemic worldwide condition that represents a neglected parasitic disease with important socioeconomic repercussions. Proteomic characterization of larval and adult stages of E. granulosus, as well as the association between expression profiles and host interactions, is relevant for a better understanding of parasite biology, and eventually for drug design and vaccine development. This study aimed to develop a synthesis of the evidence available related to proteomics of E. g…

Hydatid cyst caused by Echinococcus granulosus is one of the most important parasitic diseases around the world and many countries in Asia, including Iran, are involved with this infection. This disease can cause high mortality in humans as well as economic losses in livestock. To date, several molecular methods have been used to determine the genetic diversity of E. granulosus. So far, identification of E. granulosus using real-time PCR fluorescence-based quantitative assays has not been studied worldwide, also in Iran. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity…

The aim of this study was to examine the longest survival time of Echinococcus granulosus protoscolices stored at different humidities and constant temperatures from -10 to +40 degrees C. Sheep livers containing hydatid cysts obtained from slaughterhouses were taken to the laboratory within 3h and transferred into incubation cabinet previously set at -10, 0, +10, +20, +30 and +40 degrees C with different relative humidity (RH). Viability of protoscolices was assessed by 0.1% eosin staining. The longest survival times were 3 days at -10 degrees C (50% RH), 36 days at 0 degrees C (60% RH), 28 da…

INTRODUCTION: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a world-wide zoonosis but is relatively rare in Western industrial countries. Surgery is the treatment of choice. However, the technical procedure varies and evidence-based knowledge is fragmentary. Cystectomy and partial resection of the liver (pericystectomy, segmental resection, hemihepatectomy) are the procedures under debate.
OBJECTIVE: We present a descriptive analysis of the patients suffering from CE (anamnesis, cyst location, procedures, morbidity, lethality, hospital stay, and long-term follow-up).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was ma

The authors report their personal experience of the treatment of 50 patients with hydatid cysts of different localization with 10-12 mg Albendazole per kg per day for three months without intervals. During the treatment patients were submitted to careful clinical, biochemical, radiological and immunological controls. In all 105 hydatid cysts were observed, and the follow-up periods ranged from six to 42 months. The side effects were not severe. Four patients were considered healed, 31 improved, and 11 showed no change. Three patients relapsed after the end of the therapy, and were treated with

Among all the cases of hydatid disease seen in an 8-year period at Asir Central Hospital, Abha, Saudi Arabia, seven cases are reported here … en though there was no mortality in these patients, there was disabling morbidity. We conclude that Echinococcus granulosus can affect any organ in the body and a high suspicion of this disease is justified in endemic regions. Moreover, medical treatment should precede and follow the surgical intervention.
