Toward a generative information ecology.

Information ecology does not yet possess a unified theoretical foundation; existing approaches provide diverse interpretations without a shared philosophical core. Taking Yixin Zhong's information ecology as a point of departure, this paper explores how information ecology can be transformed into a generative framework capable of serving as a general methodology for information studies. Zhong made a significant contribution by recognizing the philosophical potential of information ecology for transforming the paradigm of information science. However, his framework faces two fundamental limitat…

Evolutionary ecology: Islands within islands.

Deep sinkhole forests shelter rare trees from climate stress but strand them in severe isolation. A new study of a karst magnolia shows interior populations lose genetic diversity and accumulate harmful mutations, suggesting climate refuges may also become evolutionary traps.

Spatial ecology of translocated raccoons.

Raccoons (Procyon lotor) are routinely translocated both legally and illegally to mitigate conflicts with humans, which has contributed to the spread of rabies virus across eastern North America. The movement behavior of translocated raccoons has important ramifications for disease transmission yet remains understudied and poorly quantified. To examine the spatial ecology of raccoons following experimental translocation, we performed reciprocal 16 km-distance translocations of 30 raccoons between habitats of high and low raccoon density (bottomland hardwood and upland pine, respectively) acros…

Malassezia ecology, pathophysiology, and treatment.

Malassezia are lipid dependent basidiomycetous yeasts that inhabit the skin and mucosa of humans and other warm-blooded animals, and are a major component of the skin microbiome. They occur as skin commensals, but are also associated with various skin disorders and bloodstream infections. The genus currently comprises 17 species and has recently been assigned its own class, Malasseziomycetes. Importantly, multiple Malassezia species and/or genotypes may cause unique or similar pathologies and vary in their antifungal susceptibility. In addition to culture-based approaches, culture-independent

Hendra virus ecology and transmission.

Hendra virus causes acute and highly fatal infection in horses and humans. Pteropid bats (flying-foxes) are the natural host of the virus, w … cent availability of an effective vaccine for horses, a comprehensive understanding of Hendra virus ecology and transmission is essential to limit inter-species transmission.

The ecology of Bacillus anthracis.

The global distribution of anthrax is largely determined by soils with high calcium levels and a pH above 6.1, which foster spore survival. … ill fluids, and thereby aid bacilli dispersal and initiate sporulation. In the context of landscape ecology viable spore distribution is a function of mean annual temperature, annual precipitation, elevation, mean NDVI, annual NDVI amplitude, soil moisture content, and soil pH.

Microbial ecology and tonsillar infection.

The results of quantitative and qualitative analyses of tonsillar bacterial flora in chronic tonsillitis patients and healthy subjects are reported. Based on these results, the pathogenesis of tonsillar infections is discussed from the standpoint of bacterial ecology.

Over thousands of years, a wide variety of food fermentations in human diets have developed in different geographical regions, cultures, and … ffects patterns of microbial succession and key metabolic dependencies. The principles of microbial ecology can be used to understand growth, activity and interactions in these diverse communities. In this review, we summarise the historical significance and factors influencing key microbial functions in palm wine, wine, sourdough, and tempeh, selected fo …

Evolutionary ecology of Lyme Borrelia.

The bacterial genus, Borrelia, is comprised of vector-borne spirochete species that infect and are transmitted from multiple host species. Some Borrelia species cause highly-prevalent diseases in humans and domestic animals. Evolutionary, ecological, and molecular research on many Borrelia species have resulted in tremendous progress toward understanding the biology and natural history of these species. Yet, many outstanding questions, such as how Borrelia populations will be impacted by climate and land-use change, will require an interdisciplinary approach. The evolutionary ecology research …

The autoimmune ecology: an update.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The autoimmune ecology refers to the interactions between individuals and their environment leading to a breakdown in immune tolerance and, therefore, to the development of one or more autoimmune diseases in such an individual. Herein, an update is offered on four specific factors associated with autoimmune diseases, namely, vitamin D, smoking, alcohol and coffee consumption from the perspective of exposome and metabolomics. RECENT FINDINGS: Smoking is associated with an increased risk for most of the autoimmune diseases. Carbamylation of proteins as well as NETosis have em…

Vector ecology of equine piroplasmosis.

Equine piroplasmosis is a disease of Equidae, including horses, donkeys, mules, and zebras, caused by either of two protozoan parasites, The … ip is critical to the epidemiology of these parasites, we highlight current knowledge of the vector ecology of these tick-borne equine pathogens, emphasizing tick transmissibility and potential control strategies to prevent their spread.

Brazilian Cerrado soil Actinobacteria ecology.

A total of 2152 Actinobacteria strains were isolated from native Cerrado (Brazilian Savannah) soils located in Passos, Luminárias, and Arcos municipalities (Minas Gerais State, Brazil). The soils were characterised for chemical and microbiological analysis. The microbial analysis led to the identification of nine genera (Streptomyces, Arthrobacter, Rhodococcus, Amycolatopsis, Microbacterium, Frankia, Leifsonia, Nakamurella, and Kitasatospora) and 92 distinct species in both seasons studied (rainy and dry). The rainy season produced a high microbial population of all the aforementioned genera.

Epidemiology and ecology of onychomycosis.

The epidemiology and ecology of onychomycosis are complex and little understood. Most is known about tinea unguium, dermatophytic nail infection, and its causative agents. This is often categorised according to the precise locus on the nail of the infection. The principal infectious propagules are thought to be the arthroconidia or chlamydospores which form within the solid substratum of invaded nail tissue. The process of infecting new hosts appears to be facilitated by abrasion, moistening and scratching. The role of the non-dermatophyte yeast Candida as an agent of onychomycosis per se may …
