Human Case of Ehrlichia chaffeensis Infection, Taiwan.

In 2018, an immunosuppressed woman in southern Taiwan had onset of fever, chills, myalgia, malaise, thrombocytopenia, lymphocytopenia, and elevated hepatic transaminases. Investigation revealed infection with Ehrlichia chaffeensis. This autochthonous case of human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis was confirmed by PCR, DNA sequencing, and seroconversion.

Ehrlichia species in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks in Cameroon.

Ehrlichia and Anaplasma species are tick-transmitted obligately intracellular bacteria that commonly cause disease in dogs worldwide. In addition to causing disease in canines, Ehrlichia chaffeensis, Ehrlichia ewingii, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are responsible for emerging and life-threatening human zoonoses in the United States. We previously reported a high prevalence of E. canis infection in Cameroonian dogs based on serologic and molecular evidence. This study was undertaken to determine the Ehrlichia species (E. canis, E. chaffeensis, E. ewingii) present in Rhipicephalus sanguineus ti…

Ehrlichia under our noses and no one notices.

Ehrlichia chaffeensis, an obligately intracellular bacterium, resides within a cytoplasmic vacuole in macrophages, establishes persistent infection in natural hosts such as white-tailed deer and canids, and is transmitted transstadially and during feeding by ticks, particularly Amblyomma americanum. Ehrlichial cell walls contain glycoproteins and a family of divergent 28 kDa proteins, but no peptidoglycan or lipopolysaccharide. The dense-cored ultrastructural form preferentially expresses certain glycoproteins, including a multiple repeat unit-containing adhesin. Ehrlichiae attach to L-selecti…

[Ecological aspects of human pathogens Ehrlichia and Bartonella].

The review presents data on the natural circulation of Bartonellas and Erlichias with the participation of lice, fleas, mosquitoes, Ixodes ticks, as well as rodents, large wild mammals, and domestic animals. It outlines the human infection routes that are mainly associated with the attack of infected carriers and with the contacts with different warm-blooded animals. The risk of bartonellosis spread is evidenced by the data showing that 12.3% of clothes lice collected from homeless individuals in Moscow turned out to be infected. In a focus of erlichiasis, the infection rates of Ambliomma amer

Ehrlichia canis: Is It a Pathogen for Humans and Other Primates?

Ehrlichioses and anaplasmosis are among the most commonly reported tick-borne diseases in humans and some animal species. Ehrlichia canis is the causative agent of canine monocytic ehrlichiosis; it primarily affects dogs and is usually transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus ticks. Some reports suggest that this bacterium is a zoonotic pathogen capable of causing clinical symptoms consistent with human monocytotropic ehrlichiosis caused by Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Non-human primates seem to be susceptible to E. canis-infection, although it is not clear whether the bacterium can cause disease in …

Detection of antibodies reactive with Ehrlichia chaffeensis in the raccoon.

Antibodies reactive with Ehrlichia chaffeensis were detected in raccoon (Procyon lotor) serum samples by using an indirect immunofluorescence assay. Samples from 411 raccoons trapped in the southeastern United States from 1977 to 1999 were tested. Serologically reactive samples with reciprocal titers of > or =16 were detected from 83 raccoons (20%) from 13 of 16 counties in eight states, indicating that raccoons are commonly exposed to E. chaffeensis. Samples collected as early as 1977 were positive. A polymerase chain reaction assay specific for E. chaffeensis failed to detect the presence of…

Two USA Ehrlichia spp. cause febrile illness in goats.

Ehrlichia spp. are not currently recognized as a cause of illness in goats in the USA, but three Ehrlichia are enzootic in lone star ticks (Amblyomma americanum) in the eastern USA, and related bacteria in other countries cause illness in goats. We exposed naïve goats to Ehrlichia-infected Amblyomma and demonstrated that infection and clinical illness can be caused by two USA species, E. ewingii and the recently discovered Panola Mountain Ehrlichia sp. Clinical features in all five goats are described; ehrlichioses were associated with pyrexia, serous nasal discharge, inappetance, lethargy, de…

[Ehrlichia chaffeensis antibodies prevalence among patients bitten by ticks].

Human ehrlichiosis is a tick-borne antropozoonosis which was described in 1987 but in Poland up to now has not been diagnosed. The purpose of our work was to present 11 cases where antibodies against Ehrlichia chaffeensis were detected in serum. In 2000 we examined 68 sera of patients who were referred to our department with suspected Borreliosis or Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE). The detection of antibodies against E. chaffeensis was performed by indirect immunofluorescence assay. Five (45.4%) patients of 11 were diagnosed as Lyme borreliosis confirmed by serum presence of antibodies against B…

Molecular identification of Ehrlichia ewingii in a polyarthritic Texas dog.

An 8-year-old, neutered male, Golden Retriever presented for bilateral carpal joint effusion. A complete blood count revealed mild leukopenia and marked thrombocytopenia. Samples were sent to the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory for blood smear review and serologic testing for tick-borne diseases. Numerous morulae were observed within neutrophils, and antibodies against Ehrlichia canis were detected at a 1:512 dilution via the indirect fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. As neutrophilic morulae are morphologically indistinguishable between Ehrlichia ewingii and Anaplasma phagocy…

[Ehrlichia infection in a child: clinical findings and review of the literature].

A 12 year old child was brought in by his parents due to persistent fever of 3 weeks duration, sore throat, malaise, chills, small joint art … Serology and blood count carried out in a specialized laboratory showed positive titers (> 160) for Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Further confirmation was obtained using genus-specific polymerase chain reaction. After a 3-week course of doxycicline the patient recovered and serological titers decreased.

Infections with Babesia canis and Ehrlichia canis in dogs in Zimbabwe.

Of 105 dogs examined at a veterinary hospital in Harare, Zimbabwe, 52 per cent had antibodies reactive with Ehrlichia canis in indirect fluorescent antibody tests, 26 per cent had Babesia canis parasites in peripheral blood smears and 17 per cent had both infections. None of the dogs with serological evidence of ehrlichiosis had typical E canis morulae detectable in blood smears. The infections were regarded as incidental findings not readily related to the reasons for examination in 46 per cent of the dogs with antibodies to E canis and 17 per cent of the dogs with both infections. The most c…

Immune response of ponies to experimental infection with Ehrlichia equi.

Four ponies experimentally infected with Ehrlichia equi developed substantial cell-mediated immune responses, as measured by the leukocyte migration-inhibition test. Serum anti-E equi antibodies up to 1:1,280 were demonstrated by the indirect fluorescent antibody test. Cell-mediated immune responses returned to a base-line value by day 200 after primary inoculation, but serum antibody titers persisted for at least 300 days after inoculation. Two additional susceptible ponies, which were inoculated with convalescent blood or organ homogenates from ponies recovered from acute equine ehrlichiosis…

Natural and experimental infection of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from the United States with an Ehrlichia sp. closely related to Ehrlichia ruminantium.

An Ehrlichia sp. (Panola Mountain [PM] Ehrlichia sp.) closely related to Ehrlichia ruminantium was recently detected in a domestic goat experimentally infested with lone star ticks (LSTs, Amblyomma americanum) collected from Georgia, USA. The infected goat exhibited pyrexia and mild clinical pathologic abnormalities consistent with ehrlichiosis. At least two other Ehrlichia species (Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Ehrlichia ewingii) are maintained in nature by a cycle involving LSTs as the primary vector and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus) as a known or suspected reservoir. To investigate …

Survival of Ehrlichia chaffeensis in refrigerated, ADSOL-treated RBCs.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the persistence of viable Ehrlichia chaffeensis in ADSOL-treated RBCs stored at 4 to 6 degrees C. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The continuous monocytic cell lines THP-1 and DH82 were infected with E. chaffeensis (St. Vincent isolate). Packed RBC units were inoculated in separate experiments with E. chaffeensis-infected cells as final concentrations of 8.02 x 10(4) (DH82) and 1.43 x 10(4) (THP-1) infected cells per mL. Aliquots were stored at 4 to 6 degrees C for 1 to 42 days. At selected intervals, nucleated cells from the RBC aliquots wer…

Persistent infection of C3H/HeJ mice by Ehrlichia chaffeensis.

Description of the pathobiology of the recently described zoonotic agent of human ehrlichiosis (Ehrlichia chaffeensis) would be greatly facilitated by the availability of a convenient experimental animal model of infection. We determined whether C3H/HeJ mice could sustain persistent infection by this predominantly monocyte-inhabiting rickettsia. Such mice rapidly produced an intense specific IgG response upon inoculation of ehrlichiae, and high titers were demonstrable for more than 6 months thereafter. Ehrlichiae were reisolated from the peripheral blood and spleen of 1 mouse at day 11 after …

Isolation and Characterization of a Novel Pathogenic Strain of Ehrlichia minasensis.

The genus Ehrlichia is composed of tick-borne obligate intracellular gram-negative alphaproteobacteria of the family Anaplasmataceae. Ehrlichia includes important pathogens affecting canids (E. canis, E. chaffeensis, and E. ewingii), rodents (E. muris), and ruminants (E. ruminantium). Ehrlichia minasensis, an Ehrlichia closely related to E. canis, was initially reported in Canada and Brazil. This bacterium has now been reported in Pakistan, Malaysia, China, Ethiopia, South Africa, and the Mediterranean island of Corsica, suggesting that E. minasensis has a wide geographical distribution. Previ…
