Application of perfluoropolyether elastomers in microfluidic drug metabolism assays.

Recently, increasing attention has been paid to liver-on-a-chip models for both pharmacokinetics and toxicity (ADMET) screenings. Although polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) is the most popular material for the fabrication of microfluidic devices, its extensive sorption of hydrophobic drugs limits its applications. Therefore, we investigated a chemically repellent material, perfluoropolyether (PFPE) elastomer, as an alternative to PDMS. Primary rat hepatocytes cultured in the PFPE microfluidic device were polygonal or cuboidal in shape and had one or two prominent nuclei, as when cultured in 96-well

Simultaneously Toughening and Stiffening Elastomers with Octuple Hydrogen Bonding.

Current synthetic elastomers suffer from the well-known trade-off between toughness and stiffness. By a combination of multiscale experiments and atomistic simulations, a transparent unfilled elastomer with simultaneously enhanced toughness and stiffness is demonstrated. The designed elastomer comprises homogeneous networks with ultrastrong, reversible, and sacrificial octuple hydrogen bonding (HB), which evenly distribute the stress to each polymer chain during loading, thus enhancing stretchability and delaying fracture. Strong HBs and corresponding nanodomains enhance the stiffness by restr…

Mechanical behavior of facial prosthetic elastomers after outdoor weathering.

OBJECTIVES: The degradation of maxillofacial prosthetic elastomers that occurs during physical weathering is usually responsible for the replacement of prostheses. In this study the mechanical behavior of 4 non-pigmented facial prosthetic elastomers, exposed to outdoor weathering for 1 year, was investigated. The hypothesis investigated was that irradiation time did not affect the properties measured. METHODS: The samples were exposed to solar radiation for 1 year in Thessaloniki (Greece). Three different types of polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) and chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) samples were te…

Robust, Recyclable, and Reversibly Adhesive Polysulfide Elastomers via Inverse Vulcanization.

Inverse vulcanization stands as a transformative strategy for valorizing surplus sulfur into polysulfides; however, inverse vulcanized polysulfides typically necessitate harsh synthetic conditions and suffer from an intrinsic trade-off between mechanical strength and network flexibility, limiting their practical applications. Herein, we report a mild-condition synthetic paradigm for the fabrication of recyclable yet mechanically robust polysulfide elastomers. Specifically, carboxyl-functionalized polysulfide prepolymers were first synthesized through the ternary inverse vulcanization of sulfur…

Reluctance Modulation of Structured Magnetorheological Elastomers for Wireless Biomechanical Sensing.

Inductive sensors are widely implemented in industry due to their noncontact measurement capabilities and inherent immunity to environmental factors such as humidity and electrostatic charges. The rigid construction, however, confines the applications of inductive sensors to heavy machinery and robotics, with few uses in detecting subtle mechanical signals in biology. Here, we cover planar coils with structured magnetorheological elastomers (MRE) to yield a flexible inductive sensor that matches the soft mechanical properties of biological tissues. Multilayer microcavities within the MRE enabl…

Thermoplastic elastomers containing antimicrobial and antiviral additives for mobility applications.

The transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus has been shown through droplets generated by infected people when coughing, sneezing, or talking in close contact. These droplets either reach the next person directly or land on nearby surfaces. The objective of this study is to develop a novel, durable, and effective disinfecting antimicrobial (antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal) styrene-ethylene/butylene-styrene (SEBS) based thermoplastic elastomers (TPE). TPE incorporated with six different formulations was investigated for mechanical and antiviral performance. The formulations consist o…

Quadruple Hydrogen Bonding Supramolecular Elastomers for Melt Extrusion Additive Manufacturing.

This manuscript describes the versatility of highly directional, noncovalent interactions, i.e., quadruple hydrogen bonding (QHB), to afford novel polyurea segmented supramolecular polymers for melt extrusion three-dimensional (3D) printing processes. The molecular design of the polyurea elastomers features (1) flexible polyether segments and relatively weak urea hydrogen-bonding sites in the soft segments to provide elasticity and toughness, and (2) strong ureido-cytosine (UCyt) QHB in the hard segments to impart enhanced mechanical integrity. The resulting polyureas were readily compression-…

Poly(polyol sebacate) Elastomers as Coatings for Metallic Coronary Stents.

Biocompatible polymeric coatings for metallic stents are desired, as currently used materials present limitations such as deformation during degradation and exponential loss of mechanical properties after implantation. These concerns, together with the present risks of the drug-eluting stents, namely, thrombosis and restenosis, require new materials to be studied. For this purpose, novel poly(polyol sebacate)-derived polymers are investigated as coatings for metallic stents. All pre-polymers reveal a low molecular weight between 3000 and 18 000 g mol-1 . The cured polymers range from flexible

Thromboembolic complications with silicone elastomer subclavian catheters.

Central venous thrombosis is a well-recognized complication of plastic catheters used during parenteral nutrition and occurs in up to 33% of cases if examined venographically. Silicone elastomer catheters, in addition to their favorable handling properties, are less thrombogenic than plastic varieties and are now increasingly used for parenteral nutrition. However, their use does not prevent the possibility of catheter-related thrombosis as this study demonstrates. In a consecutive series of 118 silicone elastomer subclavian catheters, 83% of which were used for parenteral nutrition, two insta

Flexible elastomer molds in burn scar control.

Burn scar hypertrophies and contractures have responded well to pressure techniques with pressure gradient burn garments except over soft tissue areas and concave body areas such as the axilla, hand, clavicle, neck, and face. Although these areas represent only 20 percent of the body area, when scarred from burns they pose perplexing functional and esthetic problems. Rigid splints and face masks have been used but their rigidity makes them uncomfortable for long-term wear. Silastic Medical Elastomer molds have proved highly successful in these areas when worn under pressure garments. They are

Reprogrammable 3D-printed liquid crystal elastomers via UV-triggered RAFT interchange.

Reprogrammable liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are promising stimuli-responsive materials for soft actuators; however, their integration with digital light processing (DLP) 3D printing is often limited by a lack of dynamic chemistries compatible with radical photopolymerization. Herein, we introduce UV-triggered reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization as a robust solution for spatially selective programming, erasing, and reprogramming of mesogen alignment in printed LCE networks. The resulting networks achieve high-performance actuation (up to 60% strain) and ma…

Chitosan and polycaprolactone blended PDMS coatings improve biocompatibility of magnetic elastomers.

PDMS/NdFeB composites are promising materials for soft magnetic actuators, but NdFeB particles corrode in body fluids and release toxic metal ions, limiting their biomedical use. We developed ~ 100 µm spin-coated PDMS-chitosan (PDMS-CHIT) and PDMS-polycaprolactone (PDMS-PCL) coatings that solve this problem. Over 24 weeks of immersion, these coatings reduced neodymium and iron release by more than 95%, keeping ion concentrations well below cytotoxicity thresholds. Importantly, the PDMS-PCL coating fully preserved magnetorheological actuation (ΔG' ≈ 61 kPa under 0.5 T, comparable to uncoated co

Polyurethane Elastomers with Superior Mechanical Stability across a Wide Temperature Range.

Elastomers with mechanically stable performance over extreme temperatures are urgently demanded for deep-space exploration, such as load-bearing components in lunar rovers. However, conventional elastomers suffer from cryogenic brittleness and high-temperature degradation. Herein, we report a polyurethane, FPPU6-Zn2, with exceptional mechanical strength and toughness across a broad window from -100 to 100 °C, by integrating two soft segments with multiple hydrogen bonds and metal-ligand coordination. At room temperature, it delivers a tensile strength of 42 MPa and toughness of 191 MJ/m3; it r…

Engineering and Exploring Hydrolytic Degradation in 3D-Printed Liquid Crystalline Elastomers.

Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) are being increasingly explored as biomaterials; however, many LCE properties were not designed with biomedical use in mind. Here, we examine LCE hydrolytic degradation, including investigating approaches to accelerate degradation and whether thermal and mechanical properties change with degradation. Among 3D-printable LCE chemistries, we find that networks formed via thiol-Michael addition followed by thiol-ene photo-cross-linking degrade most rapidly. The integration of hydrophilic chain extenders (e.g., PEG) accelerates LCE degradation and demonstrates t…

Molecular mechanism of the fracture properties of slide-ring crosslinked elastomers.

Whilst slide-ring (SR) crosslinked elastomers (SRCE) have attracted much attention due to their excellent fracture toughness, the molecular mechanism by which fracture occurs is unclear. Therefore, a coarse-grained model of SRCE with different crosslink densities and SR coverages is constructed in this work. By performing a triaxial deformation, the maximum fracture energy of the SRCE obtained at a moderate SR crosslink density is about 72 times higher than when no crosslink bonds are present. However, the fracture energy decreases by about 3.5 times when the SR coverage increases from 5% to 2…

Weak Covalent Bonds and Mechanochemistry for Synergistic Self-Strengthening of Elastomers.

The macroscopic properties of elastomers are intimately linked to their molecular reactivity and mechanisms. Here, we propose a new strategy for designing strengthening materials based on the synergy of weak covalent bonds and mechanochemistry. After mechanical treatment, the failure strength and toughness of the elastomer increased from 2.37 ± 0.05 MPa and 11.34 ± 0.30 MJ/m3 to 6.02 ± 0.04 MPa and 18.40 ± 0.30 MJ/m3, respectively, while maintaining excellent tensile properties. Notably, experimental tests, theoretical calculations, and small-molecule reaction model results show that the sulfu…

Skin-Inspired Monolithic Multimodal Optical Fibers via Thermochromic Microcapsule-Doped Elastomers.

Inspired by human skin, we developed a monolithic POF sensor for temperature, pressure, and bending. Red, yellow, and green thermochromic microcapsules were embedded in a PDMS matrix. Temperature was detected through wavelength-selective absorption, with a maximum sensitivity of 9.28%/°C. Pressure and bending were measured through deformation-induced radiation loss and macrobending loss, with sensitivities of 116.83%/mm and 0.48%/deg, respectively. Temperature and mechanical signals exhibit two distinct spectral responses: wavelength-selective thermal modulation and broadband mechanical attenu
