The ability to localize communication signals plays a fundamental role in social interactions. For signal localization to take place, the sensory system of the receiver must extract information about distance and direction to the sender from physical characteristics of the signal. In many sensory systems, information from multiple peripheral receptors must be integrated by central sensory pathways to determine the sender location. Here, we asked whether evolutionary divergence in the electrosensory and visual systems of mormyrid fish is associated with signal localization behavior. In mormyrid

The ability to orient to and track moving electrolocation targets was assessed in normal Apteronotus leptorhynchus and in those with unilateral lesions of the nucleus praeeminentialis dorsalis. 1. Each fish was trained to hover between two vertical metal rods and track their movement. Two aspects of this behavior were measured: a) the hovering position of the fish relative to stationary rods; b) the latency between the onset of rod motion and the fish's tracking response. Control fish hovered midway between stationary rods, while lesioned fish hovered closer to the rod ipsilateral to the lesio

Roles of the time coding electrosensory system in the novelty responses of a pulse-type gymnotiform electric fish, Brachyhypopomus, were examined behaviorally, physiologically, and anatomically. Brachyhypopomus responded with the novelty responses to small changes (100 μs) in time difference between electrosensory stimulus pulses applied to different parts of the body, as long as these pulses were given within a time period of ~500 μs. Physiological recording revealed neurons in the hindbrain and midbrain that fire action potentials time-locked to stimulus pulses with short latency (500-900 μs…

Initiating and regulating vertebrate reproduction requires pulsatile release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH1) from the hypothalamus. Coordinated GnRH1 release, not simply elevated absolute levels, effects the release of pituitary gonadotropins that drive steroid production in the gonads. However, the mechanisms underlying synchronization of GnRH1 neurons are unknown. Control of synchronicity by gap junctions between GnRH1 neurons has been proposed but not previously found. We recorded simultaneously from pairs of transgenically labeled GnRH1 neurons in adult male Astatotilapia burtoni

The anterior and posterior exterolateral nuclei (ELa and ELp) of the mormyrid midbrain are thought to play a critical role in the temporal analysis of the electric discharge waveforms of other individuals. The peripheral electroreceptors receiving electric organ discharges (EODs) of other fish project through the brainstem to ELa via a rapid conducting pathway. EODs, composed of brief, but stereotyped waveforms are encoded as a temporal pattern of spikes. From previous work, we know that phase locking is precise in ELa. Here it is shown that evoked potentials recorded from ELp show a similar h

Like stomatogastric activity in crustaceans, vocalization in teleosts and frogs, and locomotion in mammals, the electric organ discharge (EOD) of weakly electric fish is a rhythmic and stereotyped electromotor pattern. The EOD, which functions in both perception and communication, is controlled by a two-layered central pattern generator (CPG), the electromotor CPG, which modifies its basal output in response to environmental and social challenges. Despite major anatomo-functional commonalities in the electromotor CPG across electric fish species, we show that Gymnotus omarorum and Brachyhypopo…

Electrotonic transmission via gap junctions appears to be essential for both the relay and integration of information in nuclear groups involved in the electrolocation and electrocommunication systems of weakly electric fish. An affinity-purified antibody against the 27 kD gap-junctional polypeptide (GJP) from rat liver was used to determine immunohistochemically the distribution of GJP-immunoreactivity (GJP-IR) in electrosensory structures and some other brain regions of the gymnotiform fish, Apteronotus leptorhynchus. At the ultrastructural level, immunolabelling with this antibody was local…

Electroreceptors, distributed over the body surface of weakly electric fish, code the local amplitude and phase, or timing of zerocrossing, of the animal's electric signals. These signals are generated by rhythmic discharges of the electric organ and form a dipole-like field around the animal. This field is perturbed by interference with electric fields of other fish as well as by the appearance of objects electrically different from water. The spatial and temporal structure of such perturbations can be interpreted as the electric image of interfering fields and moving objects. This strategy o…

Natural organic matter (NOM) is an important constituent of aquatic environments; however, its influence on aquatic biota remains poorly studied. In the current study, NOM was isolated from nine different sites in southern Ontario, Canada, by the on-site treatment of water by reverse osmosis, followed by cation exchange. NOM from each site was reconstituted to 10 mg of C/L and pH 7.0 and exposed to either adult rainbow trout implanted with indwelling catheters or to in vitro primary cultures of the gill epithelium grown on semipermeable membranes. In both the in vivo and in vitro preparations,

Pulsed electric field (PEF) processing has emerged as a promising non-thermal technology capable of modifying biomolecular structures and enhancing functional properties in food systems. In this study, PEF was applied to fabricate cross-linked alginate-fish gelatin materials, and their structural characteristics, antioxidative activity, and nutrient entrapment capacity were compared with those produced using conventional homogenization. Structural analysis revealed that PEF processing generated smaller particle sizes (~80 nm) compared with homogenization (250-550 nm) and produced more compact

Understanding how the brain processes sensory input to generate behavior remains an important problem in neuroscience. Towards this end, it is useful to compare results obtained across multiple species to gain understanding as to the general principles of neural coding. Here we investigated hindbrain pyramidal cell activity in the weakly electric fish Apteronotus albifrons We found strong heterogeneities when looking at baseline activity. Additionally, ON- and OFF-type cells responded to increases and decreases of sinusoidal and noise stimuli, respectively. While both cell types displayed band…

Adult males of African weakly discharging electric fish (family: Mormyridae) are distinguished from juveniles and adult females by a dorsally directed indentation of the posterior ventral body wall and by massive bone expansion of the bases of a select number of anal-fin rays. These sexually dimorphic structures seem to facilitate the anal-fin reflex that is displayed during courtship when the male envelopes its anal fin around the female's to form a common spawning pouch. Expanded bone could provide additional surface for muscle attachment and thus assist in part with the courtship sequence. …

The caudal spinal cord of Eigenmannia virescens is not enclosed in a neural canal of the vertebral column. In fact, a segmented vertebral column with neural and ventral arches is lacking and replaced by a non-segmented baton-like bony structure on which the free spinal cord is located. The baton cosists of calcified bone tissue with bone cells. Individual differences exist as far as the length of the rod is concerned. The "electromotor neurons" of this caudal part of the spinal cord are histochemically acetylcholinesterase-positive. The electrocytes which surround this part of the spinal cord

This study compares electrocommunication behaviour in groups of freely swimming weakly electric fishes of two species, Marcusenius altisambesi and Mormyrus rume. Animals emitted variable temporal sequences of stereotyped electric organ discharges (EOD) that served as communication signals. While the waveform of individual signals remained constant, the inter-discharge interval (IDI) patterns conveyed situation-specific information. Both species showed different types of group behaviour, e.g. they engaged in collective (group) foraging. The results show that in each species, during different be…

To develop effective technology that employs electric fields to simultaneously guide valued freshwater fish whilst limiting the range expansion of undesirable invasive species, there is a need to quantify the electrosensitivity of multiple families. This experimental study quantified the electrosensitivity of two carp species that, in UK, are invasive (grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, and common carp, Cyprinus carpio) and compared the values with those previously obtained for adult European eel (Anguilla anguilla), a species of conservation concern in Europe. Electric field strengths (V/cm

Animal behaviour arises through a complex mixture of biomechanical, neuronal, sensory and control constraints. By focusing on a simple, stereotyped movement, the prey capture strike of a weakly electric fish, we show that the trajectory of a strike is one which minimizes effort. Specifically, we model the fish as a rigid ellipsoid moving through a fluid with no viscosity, governed by Kirchhoff's equations. This formulation allows us to exploit methods of discrete mechanics and optimal control to compute idealized fish trajectories that minimize a cost function. We compare these with the measur…

Electric organs in Sternarchidae are of neural origin, in contrast to electric organs in other fish, which are derived from muscle. The electric organ in Sternarchus is composed of modified axons of spinal neurons. Fibers comprising the electric organ were studied by dissection and by light- and electron microscopy of sectioned material. The spinal electrocytes descend to the electric organ where they run anteriorly for several segments, turn sharply, and run posteriorly to end blindly at approximately the level where they enter the organ. At the level of entry into the organ, and where they t
