Effects of electroacupuncture on depression in a rat model.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the antidepressant-like effect of electroacupuncture (EA) in a validated rat model. METHODS: Wistar Kyoto rats, a valid animal model of depression, were randomly divided into two groups, EA (n = 7) and placebo control (n = 6). EA treatment was given once a day, 5 days a week, for 3 weeks. Two acupoints, GV14 (Dazhui) and GV20 (Baihui), respectively on the cervical spine and scalp, were selected. EA frequency was held constant at 2Hz (2 pulses/second), pulse width 0.3-ms, and intensity was adjusted to 3 mA. Forced swim tests (FST), open field tests (OFT; e.g., a. rear…

Antidepressive-like effects of electroacupuncture in rats.

Here, we investigate the effects of electroacupunture on the depressive-like symptoms in learned helplessness and forced swim tests in rats. Electroacupuncture stimulation (EA) was provided at ST-36 (Zusanli) and SP-6 (Sanyinjiao) acupoints. A positive control group was treated with imipramine. To verify the effects of EA over serotonergic system, other additional groups received daily, for three days, p-chlorophenylalanine and after two days, were submitted to behavioral tests. EA, like imipramine, enhanced the successful active avoidance in the learned helplessness and diminished the time sp…

Pressor effect of electroacupuncture on hemorrhagic hypotension.

Neiguan (PC-6) is a traditional acupoint in each forearm and overlies the trunk of the median nerve. Previous studies show that electroacupuncture (EA) at the Neiguan acupoint could improve not only myocardial ischemic dysfunction by inducing a depressor response but also recover hemorrhagic hypotension by inducing a pressor response. However, their physiological mechanisms are not yet elucidated. We investigated the pressor effect of Neiguan EA and its mechanism by focusing on left ventricular (LV) performance in a canine hemorrhagic hypotension model. We hemorrhaged 36 anesthetized and thora…

Mechanisms of acupuncture-electroacupuncture on inflammatory pain.

Acupuncture, as a traditional treatment, has been extensively used in China for thousands of years. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture is recommended for the treatment of 77 diseases. And 16 of these diseases are related to inflammatory pain. As a combination of traditional acupuncture and modern electrotherapy, electroacupuncture (EA) has satisfactory analgesic effects on various acute and chronic pain. Because of its good analgesic effects and no side effects, acupuncture has been widely accepted all over the world. Despite the increase in the number of studies, th…

Mechanisms of acupuncture-electroacupuncture on persistent pain.

In the last decade, preclinical investigations of electroacupuncture mechanisms on persistent tissue injury (inflammatory), nerve injury (neuropathic), cancer, and visceral pain have increased. These studies show that electroacupuncture activates the nervous system differently in health than in pain conditions, alleviates both sensory and affective inflammatory pain, and inhibits inflammatory and neuropathic pain more effectively at 2 to 10 Hz than at 100 Hz. Electroacupuncture blocks pain by activating a variety of bioactive chemicals through peripheral, spinal, and supraspinal mechanisms. Th…

High-intensity electroacupuncture is superior to low-intensity electroacupuncture for knee osteoarthritis: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) has been demonstrated to be efficacious and safe in patients with knee osteoarthritis (KOA), yet the optimal current intensity for pain control in KOA remains unspecified. The present meta-analysis aimed to compare the effects of high-intensity and low-intensity EA in terms of pain relief and functional improvement in KOA. METHODS: A thorough and comprehensive literature search for randomized controlled trials (RCTs), all looking at the intensity of EA for KOA, was carried out in PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNK…

Electroacupuncture Inhibits Ferroptosis Induced by Cerebral Ischemiareperfusion.

BACKGROUND: Electroacupuncture (EA) treatment has been recommended by World Health Organization (WHO) for years on cerebral ischemia treatment, but the specific mechanism is still elusive. Studies have shown that EA can relieve brain damage after ischemic stroke by inhibiting programmed cell death (PCD), such as apoptosis, necroptosis, and autophagy. Ferroptosis, a unique form of cell death, has been highlighted recently and found to occur in I/R injury. We, therefore, investigated whether EA plays an essential role in relieving cerebral I/R injury via ferroptosis. METHODS: The modified MCAO/…

Electroacupuncture Effectiveness for Treating Idiopathic Male Infertility.

BACKGROUND: Male infertility accounts for ∼50% of all infertility cases. The reasons for male infertility may vary, and one of them is related to an idiopathic factor that may impair spermatogenesis. Acupuncture is one of the most well-known and widely accepted alternative treatments and is becoming known as an effective complementary therapy for infertility. CASE: The case in this article demonstrated the effectiveness of electroacupuncture (EA) for improving male fertility by referring to the total motile sperm count (TMSC), sperm morphology and motility, DNA Fragmentation Index (DFI) of th…

Chlorpromazine attenuated electroacupuncture analgesia in conscious rabbits.

By measuring the defense behavior in response to the noxious stimulation induced by potassium iontophoresis on ear-lobe skin of conscious rabbit, chlorpromazine (CPZ) (0.5 mg.kg-1, i.v.) induced hyperalgesia, whereas it significantly attenuated electroacupuncture analgesia (EAA) efficacy. Monoamines and their metabolites in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were measured by high pressure liquid chromatography with electrochemical detector (HPLC-ECD) while the attenuation effect of CPZ on EAA was observed. CPZ markedly enhanced 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) (P < 0.05) and homovanillic acid (HV…

[Research progress on the mechanisms of electroacupuncture in the treatment of obesity].

Obesity is a chronic metabolic syndrome, and unhealthy lifestyles contribute to a continuous rise in its prevalence. As a non-pharmacological intervention with mild adverse reactions, electroacupuncture has achieved favorable therapeutic effects on obesity and its complications in recent years. This paper reviews studies on the mechanisms of electroacupuncture for obesity over the past decade. Electroacupuncture exerts weight-reducing effects via multiple targets and pathways, including regulating appetite-related neurons and neuropeptides in the hypothalamus, facilitating browning of white ad…

Electroacupuncture as a therapeutic intervention for obesity: mechanisms and implications.

Obesity, a prevalent metabolic disease characterized by chronic systemic inflammation and dysregulated energy homeostasis, contributes to comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Despite advancements in lifestyle interventions, pharmacotherapy and bariatric surgery, limitations in efficacy and safety emphasize the necessity for alternative therapeutic interventions. Electroacupuncture (EA), a contemporary form of traditional acupuncture, has emerged as a promising non-invasive intervention for obesity. This review synthesizes current evidence on the neuroend…
