BACKGROUND: Transient, acute delirium after electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) occurs in approximately one in eight patients. This case report describes a man with no known risk factors who developed a rare form of delirium, which is of longer duration and occurs longer after electroconvulsive therapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his forties with major depression with psychosis was admitted to the acute psychiatric ward after his sixth ECT treatment. He was disoriented, walked around restlessly, and seemed suspicious. He could not understand instructions and he ate his meals while wandering arou…

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an important component in the treatment of depression and schizophrenia in Germany. For this intervention patients undergo short-term general anesthesia and muscle relaxation. Before anesthesia can be carried out patients are subject to a comprehensive examination. For general anesthesia all established hypnotics can be used, but differences with respect to the success of the ECT have been described. Short-acting or reversible relaxants should be preferentially used. The risks of general anesthesia during ECT are estimated to be low but a transient hemodynami…

BACKGROUND: There are limited studies examining mortality associated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), and many studies do not include a control group or method to identify all patient deaths.
AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the risk of death associated with ECT treatments over 30 days and 1 year.
METHOD: We conducted a study analysing electronic medical record data from the Department of Veterans Affairs healthcare system between 2000 and 2017. We compared mortality among patients who received ECT with a matched group of patients created through propensity score matching.
RESULTS: Our sampl…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is a well established and effective therapy in treatment-resistant depression. It is performed under general anesthesia, but no consensus exists regarding the optimal anesthetic drugs. A growing interest in optimizing adjunctive medication regimes in ECT anesthesia has emerged in recent years. Moreover different methods of seizure induction have been evaluated.
RECENT FINDINGS: Pretreatment with dexmedetomidine eased the propofol injection pain and reduced the hyperdynamic response to ECT, but prolonged recovery. Remifentanil exhibited no pro…

Curative electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) remains a very useful treatment, still irreplaceable for some specific rare cases, as long as other brain stimulation methods, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, remain experimental. ECT must be preceded by a rigorous evaluation of its therapeutic index, based on its advantages and risks compared with other potential treatments, in view of the patient's medical and psychiatric history. The principal indication is very severe depressive illness. In view of its efficacy and speed of action, ECT may be a first-line treatment for life-threatening de…

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy for the treatment of depressive and bipolar disorders has been advocated as being safe and effective in pregnancy.
CASE: A primigravida underwent multiple electroconvulsive treatments during pregnancy for the diagnosis of major depression. The infant was subsequently born with multiple deep interhemispheric infarcts.
CONCLUSION: Despite reassuring statements regarding the safety of electroconvulsive therapy, this case report and a review of the literature suggests that electroconvulsive therapy during pregnancy should be performed with caution.

We report on 120 psychiatric in-patients who underwent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) during 1980-1987. The patients were hospitalized in a regional psychiatric hospital, main indications for ECT being "neuroleptic treatment resistance" (44%) and "catatonia/stupor". Between 1980 and 1987 on average 0.7% (2.75%-0.1%) of admissions were treated by means of a course of less than 10 ECT sessions (62%) or less than 15 sessions (25%), 4% patients requiring 20 ECT sessions or even more. In over half of the patients bilateral electrode placement was chosen out of therapeutic considerations. Naturally…

Electroconvulsive therapy (formerly called sismotherapy, electronarcosis or shock therapy) is a therapeutic tool used in several psychiatric illnesses. It consists in the induction of a generalized convulsive seizure by a transcranial electric stimulation. If it is true that this tool continues to stigmatise the collective imagination in giving rise to dread and suspicion (considered by some people as a barbarian or obsolete therapy), it is however an effective (sometimes irreplaceable) and well tolerated treatment. Over the last decades, ECT has generated renewed interest in psychiatric thera…

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is an established but stigmatized psychiatric treatment. The term ECT reflects the treatment's modality and action. Several authors proposed different names for ECT to deal with stigma; however, available literature that promoted different names did not address the risk/benefit ratio or offer evidence-based approach to the efficacy of this approach. We aim to examine proposed names for their specificity, accuracy, understandability, and popularity. In addition, we aim to find evidence-based methods to combat the ECT-related stigma. We reviewed the literature rel…
