Emollient Use in the Term Newborn: A Literature Review.

The skin of a term newborn differs both from preterm skin and that of an adult, and there is currently little consensus on the proper use of emollients in this population. The focus of most published literature is on preterm skin and the use of bathing products, with limited information regarding emollient use. Intact skin is the first line of defense against infection, allergens, and dehydration, and dry and compromised skin puts the infant at greater risk of harm from the aforementioned complications. Emollients are part of the front-line treatment for atopic dermatitis (AD), and, with the i…

Hypoallergenic and non-toxic emollient therapies for children.

There are many anatomical and functional differences between the skin of young children and adult skin. As a consequence, the skin is more e … ng endogenous barrier lipids, emulsifiers can promote skin dryness. We review the effects of common emollients and their suitability for skin care in children, particularly with the aim to reduce exposure to potential contact allergens and inadvertent emollient activity.

Comparing the effectiveness of topical dexamethasone emollient, lidocaine gel, and glycerin emollient on the endotracheal tube for postoperative hoarseness of voice, sore throat, and laryngospasm.

During general anesthesia, inserting a relatively stiff endotracheal tube using a metallic laryngoscope through the soft tissues of the pharynx and larynx, along with applying a pressured cuff, can result in varying degrees of tissue trauma and adverse outcomes. Anesthesiologists commonly encounter post-operative issues such as hoarseness, sore throat, and laryngospasm. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of topical applications of dexamethasone emollient, lidocaine gel, and glycerin emollient in reducing these complications. One hundred patients were randomly assigned to four groups

Optimization of Basic Emollient Therapy for the Management of Xerosis Cutis.

Topical emollients are the mainstay of basic therapy for managing xerosis cutis (dry skin). In general, most emollient formulations are safe and effective for xerosis cutis and diseases associated with dry skin; however, several other factors can vary widely between products, influence patient adherence, and ultimately affect treatment success. This article reviews key practical and clinical considerations when prescribing emollients for xerosis cutis and discusses strategies to optimize treatment and clinical outcomes for these patients. Although the optimal quantity and frequency of emollien…

Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis in Atopic Dermatitis: A Review of Clinical Studies.

Xerosis cutis (dry skin) is a common and burdensome symptom of atopic dermatitis (AD). Topical emollients restore skin hydration and barrier function through the physicochemical properties of their nonactive constituents (e.g., glycerol, urea, lactic acid, liquid paraffin, petrolatum) and represent the mainstay of basic therapy for xerosis cutis associated with AD. Newer "emollients plus" containing active ingredients may expand the treatment options available to patients with AD; however, we believe that basic emollients remain an important strategy for the long-term management of xerosis cut…

Keratolytics and emollients and their role in the therapy of psoriasis: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Psoriasis is a common chronic disease with significant impairment in quality of life. As there is no cure, it often requires lifelong disease control to minimize the development of skin lesions and to relieve symptoms. The aim of this publication is to systematically review the role of currently used emollients and keratolytics in the treatment of psoriasis. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in Medline via PubMed regarding reviews, meta-analyses, and trials published from January 1983 to December 2013 dealing with topical administration of emollients and kera…

Effects of repeated application of emollient cream to premature neonates' skin.

OBJECTIVE: Emollient cream moisturizers are often used on premature newborns in neonatal intensive care units without accurate knowledge of the risks or benefits to the neonate. DESIGN: We prospectively compared premature neonates treated with a water-in-oil emollient cream for up to 16 days to untreated premature neonates. SETTING: The study was completed in a neonatal intensive care unit on neonates admitted for respiratory distress and/or possible sepsis. PATIENTS: Thirty-four neonates, between 29 and 36 weeks estimated gestational age, entered the study. INTERVENTIONS: One-half of the

Restoring Skin Hydration and Barrier Function: Mechanistic Insights Into Basic Emollients for Xerosis Cutis.

Healthy skin is structured to maintain water balance by maximizing water retention and minimizing evaporative loss. The water-holding and barrier functions of the skin can be impaired by several factors that lead to xerosis cutis (dry skin); however, they can also be restored by basic emollients that act through the physicochemical properties of their constituents. This article aims to give a narrative review of the physiology of normal skin hydration, the key pathophysiological mechanisms implicated in dry skin, and the functional effects of basic emollients for managing xerosis cutis. Skin h…

Optimizing emollient therapy for skin barrier repair in atopic dermatitis.

OBJECTIVE: We compared the principal characteristics of over-the-counter moisturizers with physiological lipid-based barrier repair therapy (BRT). DATA SOURCES: An extended literature reported that moisturizers are considered standard ancillary therapy for anti-inflammatory skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis (AD). Additional studies have found that physiological lipid-based BRT can comprise effective, stand-alone therapy for pediatric AD. RESULTS: Not all moisturizers are beneficial-some negatively impact skin function, and in doing so, they risk inducing or exacerbating inflammation i

Clinical Benefits of Basic Emollient Therapy for the Management of Patients With Xerosis Cutis.

Xerosis cutis refers to dry skin that may be caused or exacerbated by external triggers (e.g., cold weather), endogenous factors (e.g., aging), or present as a symptom of other diseases (e.g., atopic dermatitis). Emollients are topical products formulated to rehydrate and restore the barrier function of the skin and are consistently recommended for the management of xerosis cutis and related diseases. Following the previous articles in this supplement, the present article aims to review the wider spectrum of clinical benefits associated with emollient therapy for xerosis cutis and diseases ass…

Allergic contact dermatitis to propyl gallate and pentylene glycol in an emollient cream.

A 62-year-old man, with a 20-year history of seborrhoeic dermatitis, presented with a worsening of his dermatitis. He had previously been demonstrated to be allergic to various topical corticosteroids, so he had been using an emollient cream (Sebclair), containing piroctone olamine and various anti-inflammatory substances, for 6 months, with good effect. Patch testing to the cream and its ingredients revealed positive reactions to both propyl gallate and pentylene glycol. A positive reaction to propylene glycol was also detected, whereas patch testing to butylene glycol was negative. Complete
