Employment outcomes in systemic sclerosis.

Work disability is highly prevalent in the systemic sclerosis (SSc) population; yet, it is an area of research that continues to be underrecognized and underexplored. In this chapter, we review the burden of this work disability by exploring the reported prevalence of work loss, the risk factors associated with reduced work participation, the impact on work productivity outcomes, and the economic consequences of work disability in individuals with SSc. Gender differences in supported employment.

Questions about gender equity have been asked in many aspects of the disability field and have resulted in findings that women with disabilities have significantly different experiences than do men. We analyzed an existing database of information on supported employment and natural supports to ascertain whether gender plays an important role in the employment of people with mental retardation. The findings suggest that there are several important differences. Although women were perceived as being more socially appropriate on several dimensions, they worked in jobs traditionally stereotyped by…

This study is a longitudinal follow-up study that aimed to determine whether frailty is associated with employment outcomes in schizophrenia. METHODS: All 561 stable patients with schizophrenia in a therapeutic community in Taiwan were recruited. Employment outcomes, defined as …

The employment of adults with spina bifida.

Information on employment was obtained from 157 adults with spina bifida aged 18-26 years. Ninety were given an additional interview, 43% had been employed at some time, but only 19% currently. They mainly did routine, non-manual work for average working hours, but below average pay. They enjoyed their jobs, principally for the social contact, and were well accepted by employees and work-mates. Unfortunately, job retention was poor. The 81% who were unemployed largely hoped to find a job, but suitable ones were not available. They considered that they should have more help to find jobs. Their …

Employability of the mentally disabled in the 1970s.

Of 156 discharged patients, the forty who succeeded in open employment had shown before they left hospital a combination of significantly less clinical disability, less abnormal behaviour, better work performance and better relationships with other people. We specify the approximate levels of these variables that were required to get and hold a job in the 1970s.
