Japanese encephalitis.

A young couple come to see you for a pretravel consultation. They are planning to spend a month backpacking in Thailand over December and January. They have read about Japanese encephalitis in travel books and seek your advice on the need for vaccination against this disease.

Japanese encephalitis.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that can cause encephalitis and death in horses and humans. It is an emerging disease of international concern because it has been spreading into previously nonendemic areas. Major epidemics may occur where the virus moves into new areas, but many infections are subclinical. This article presents information on the virus, its epidemiology, and what little information has been published on the disease in horses. The methods available for the diagnosis and control of JE are described and issues raised, particularly for those countri

Japanese encephalitis.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is an acute encephalomyelitis which is a primary viral encephalitis accompanying a viral infection. Clinically, the patient who either resides in an endemic region or who has been exposed to the viral vector (mosquito) may have symptoms including high fever, headache, and impaired consciousness. JE involves many portions of the supratentorial and infratentorial compartments including the brain stem, hippocampus, thalamus, basal ganglia, and white matter. Classically MR imaging demonstrates the lesions of JE as hyperintense on T2-weighted images and hypointense on T1-

Japanese encephalitis and Japanese encephalitis virus in mainland China.

Japanese encephalitis (JE), caused by Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection, is the most important viral encephalitis in the world. Approximately 35,000-50,000 people suffer from JE every year, with a mortality rate of 10,000-15,000 people per year. Although the safety and efficacy of JE vaccines (inactivated and attenuated) have been demonstrated, China still accounts for 50% of the reported JE cases worldwide. In this review, we provide information about the burden of JE in mainland China and the corresponding epidemiology from 1949 to 2010, including the morbidity and mortality of JE;

Japanese B Encephalitis.

RNA viruses are not only reported for viral pandemics but also as important agents for emerging/re-emerging diseases. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is reported to cause epidemics of encephalitis in Southeast Asia, India, Korea, China, and Indonesia. In addition, several reports show that JEV has spread to new populations beyond these geographical regions. The disease mostly affects children with a mortality rate up to 30%. In peridomestic settings, pigs are reported as amplifiers of JEV transmission and aquatic birds as maintenance hosts of the virus. The Culex mosquito is the vector for t

Japanese Encephalitis Vaccines.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a significant human health concern in Asia, Indonesia and parts of Australia with more than 3 billion people potentially at risk of infection with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), the causative agent of JE. Given the risk to human health and the theoretical potential for JEV use as a bioweapon, the development of safe and effective vaccines to prevent JEV infection is vital for preserving human health. The development of vaccines for JE began in the 1940s with formalin-inactivated mouse brain-derived vaccines. These vaccines have been shown to induce a protectiv

Japanese viral encephalitis.

One of the leading causes of acute encephalopathy in children in the tropics is Japanese encephalitis (JE). Transmitted by the culex mosquito, this neurotropic virus predominately affects the thalamus, anterior horns of the spinal cord, cerebral cortex, and cerebellum. It mainly affects children <15 years and is mostly asymptomatic. The occasional symptomatic child typically presents with a neurological syndrome characterised by altered sensorium, seizures, and features of intracranial hypertension. Aetiological diagnosis is based on virus isolation or demonstration of virus specific antigen o
