Muscle endurance training of the neck triggers migraine attacks.

BACKGROUND: Most migraine patients report neck pain as part of their migraine symptomatology, but it is unknown whether triggering neck pain would induce migraine attacks. Our aim was to assess the occurrence of headache and/or neck pain after an endurance test of the neck muscles among migraineurs and controls. METHODS: Sixty-five patients with migraine and 32 headache-free participants underwent a manual examination of the cervical spine by an assessor blinded towards the diagnosis and were sub-classified according to the appearance or absence of neck pain. Subsequently, the endurance of th

Hyperpnea training attenuates peripheral chemosensitivity and improves cycling endurance.

Well-trained endurance athletes frequently have a lower peripheral chemoreceptor (pR(c)) sensitivity and a lower minute ventilation (E) during exercise compared to untrained individuals. We speculated that the decreased pR(c) response may be specifically associated with repeated exposure to the high rates of ventilation occurring during exercise training. We therefore examined the effect of respiratory muscle training (RMT; 20x 30 min sessions of voluntary normocapnic hyperpnea) on the pR(c) sensitivity during exercise and on cycling performance. RMT was chosen to achieve a high E, similar to

Regulation of miRNAs in human skeletal muscle following acute endurance exercise and short-term endurance training.

The identification of microRNAs (miRNAs) has established new mechanisms that control skeletal muscle adaptation to exercise. The present study investigated the mRNA regulation of components of the miRNA biogenesis pathway (Drosha, Dicer and Exportin-5), muscle enriched miRNAs, (miR-1, -133a, -133b and -206), and several miRNAs dysregulated in muscle myopathies (miR-9, -23, -29, -31 and -181). Measurements were made in muscle biopsies from nine healthy untrained males at rest, 3 h following an acute bout of moderate-intensity endurance cycling and following 10 days of endurance training. Bioinf…

Cardiac adaptation to training and decreased training loads in endurance athletes: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Changes in echocardiographic standard measurements as a consequence of training and detraining in elite or subelite athletes h … y higher following training. CONCLUSION: Studies reported an increase in LVEDD and LVPW, following endurance training. However, the heterogeneity of the studies and the sensitivity of echocardiography technique can be two reasons, for which the results do not allow to state unequivocally that the adaptation to endurance training of highly trained hearts stems from …

Mitochondrial haplotype and sex modulate responses to endurance exercise training.

Heterogeneity in the response to exercise training is widely demonstrated in the literature. Although the variability in exercise acclimatio … ses to endurance exercise. Sex modulates the effects of mitochondrial haplotype in the responses to endurance training. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletion frequency increases following endurance exercise. mtDNA deletion frequency is higher in males than females after endurance exercise in OKC-HET rats.

Endurance Training Inhibits the JAK2/STAT3 Pathway to Alleviate Sarcopenia.

Aging leads to a decrease in muscle function, mass, and strength in skeletal muscle of animals and humans. The transcriptome identified activation of the JAK/STAT pathway, a pathway that is associated with skeletal muscle atrophy, and endurance training has a significant effect on improving sarcopenia; however, the exact mechanism still requires further study. We investigated the effect of endurance training on sarcopenia. Six-month-old male SAMR1 mice were used as a young control group (group C), and the same month-old male SAMP8 mice were divided into an exercise group (group E) and a model …

Right heart exercise-training-adaptation and remodelling in endurance athletes.

Long-term sports training leads to myocardial adaptations, with remodelling of the heart chambers. However, while myocardial adaptations of the left heart are well described, remodelling of the right heart and its impact on the development of arrhythmias is still debated. To conduct a systematic review on right ventricle (RV) and right atrium (RA) structural and functional changes in athletes who participate in long-term endurance training. Systematic review. A systematic literature search was conducted. All the articles reporting right heart echocardiographic (ECHO) and cardiac magnetic reson…

Resisted and Endurance High Intensity Interval Training for Combat Preparedness.

BACKGROUND: Studies support the use of new training models based on low volume and high intensity in athletes, especially in soldier populations, showing greater physical improvements than conventional and classic approaches. We conducted this study to analyze the psychophysiological response of soldiers in two different high intensity interval training protocols (HIIT), resisted (RHIIT) and endurance (EHIIT), in order to determine which HIIT elicits a psychophysiological response similar to that in actual theaters of operation.METHODS: We recruited 21 professional soldiers from the Spanish Ar

Effects of endurance training on apoptotic susceptibility in striated muscle.

An increase in the production of reactive oxygen species occurs with muscle disuse, ischemic cardiomyopathy, and conditions that arise with senescence. The resulting oxidative stress is associated with apoptosis-related myopathies. Recent research has suggested that chronic exercise is protective against mitochondrially mediated programmed cell death. To further investigate this, we compared soleus (Sol) and cardiac muscles of voluntary wheel-trained (T; 10 wk) and untrained (C) animals. Training produced a 52% increase in muscle cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity. Sol and left ventricle (LV)

Vitamins and endurance training. Food for running or faddish claims?

The inter-relationship of food and physical performance, food is considered as a conglomerate of nutrients and man is depicted as a kind of organic pudding. This 'machine' concept of human performance in combination with the mysticism surrounding vitamins, has led to the faddish belief that additional vitamins are necessary to improve physical performance by means of supercharging the metabolic processes in the body. Various vitamins and their dietary recommendations as well as the indicators for vitamin status are discussed. It is concluded that a marginal or subclinical deficiency state can

Post-exercise ketone supplementation improves endurance performance and mitochondrial adaptations during an 8-week endurance training intervention.

Post-exercise ketone supplementation (PEKS) previously improved endurance performance and muscular adaptations during overload training. However, whether and how PEKS improves endurance performance during a periodised endurance training period remains unclear. Twenty-eight trained males completed 8 weeks of supervised cycling, receiving either 25 g of the ketone monoester (R)-hydroxybutyl (R)-hydroxybutyrate (KE, n = 14) or isocaloric placebo (CON, n = 14) post-exercise and before sleep. Outcomes included exercise performance and muscular/cardiac adaptations assessed at baseline (PRE), week 3 …

The effects of autonomic dysfunction and endurance training on cardiovascular control.

The effects of autonomic dysfunction and regular activity on the cardiovascular system were investigated. The 48 participants included 12 subjects with tetraplegia, 12 subjects with paraplegia, 12 sedentary subjects, and 12 endurance-trained able-bodied controls. Central and peripheral autonomic data were obtained at rest to estimate efferent cardiac vagal output and sympathetic vasomotor control, and plasma norepinephrine concentration was determined as a marker of peripheral sympathetic activity. Cardiovascular parameters were obtained using a noninvasive cardiac output maneuver. The group w

Physiological or pseudophysiological ECG changes in endurance-trained athletes.

"Sudden cardiac death" in seemingly healthy, active, and asymptomatic people has always been a tragic fact and is now occurring more frequently. Thus, the preventive detection of "subjects at risk" becomes a priority. A traditional resting electrocardiogram can sometimes give useful indications. Fifty-two competitive triathletes were compared with 22 control persons with similar anthropometric parameters. All subjects underwent the same noninvasive cardiac exploration with electrocardiography, bidimensional echo-Doppler examination, and maximal spiroergometric exercise tests, on a stationary b

Electrocardiographic characteristics of endurance-trained Alaskan sled dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To determine electrocardiographic characteristics of endurance-trained Alaskan sled dogs. DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: 319 Ala … d Alaskan sled dogs differ from those reported for nonsled dogs, probably as a result of effects of endurance training on heart size. Some of these characteristics could be mistaken as evidence of pathologic cardiac hypertrophy.

The long non-coding RNA landscape of endurance exercise training.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) regulate multiple cellular processes. However, knowledge of the responses and regulatory functions of lncRNAs in physical exercise and training remains limited. As part of the Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC), we conducted a comprehensive analysis of lncRNA expression patterns in 18 tissues after an 8-week progressive endurance training program in rats. The lncRNA expression pattern was largely tissue-specific. In total, 759 unique lncRNAs were found to be differentially expressed across all tissues, generally displaying lower abund…

Genomics May Be the Key to Understanding Endurance Training Pillars.

Endurance performance is primarily determined by three key physiological pillars: maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max), anaerobic threshold, and economy of movement. Recent research has suggested physiological resilience as a potential fourth dimension, referring to an athlete's ability to sustain performance despite accumulating fatigue. While the role of genetic factors in endurance has been widely studied, their influence on these pillars, particularly on fatigue resistance and long-term adaptation, remains an area of growing interest. This narrative review explores the genomic basis of endurance
