Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE), also known as typhlitis, is a life-threatening condition that typically occurs in individuals with severe neutropenia, particularly following recent chemotherapy. It carries a high mortality rate, making rapid identification and treatment essential to prevent serious complications or death. The pathogenesis of NE is not fully understood but is believed to be multifactorial. It involves a sequence of events including cytotoxic drug-induced mucosal injury, microbial invasion of the colonic mucosa, and bowel wall necrosis, all occurring in the context of profound n

Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) is a serious complication in neutropenic patients. Once exclusively thought to be found in patients with leukemia and lymphoma, it is now being seen with increased frequency during bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy for solid tumors, and in patients suffering from acquired immune deficiency syndrome and cyclic neutropenia. The pathophysiology of NE is not completely understood, but unquestionably involves neutropenia, mucosal barrier damage, and infection resulting in a necrotizing process of the bowel wall. The cecum, ileus, and ascending colon are most common

Neutropenic enterocolitis, also known as typhlitis or ileocecal syndrome, is a recognized complication of the treatment of hematologic malignancies and usually is fatal. The pathologic findings consist of bowel-wall ulcerations and necrosis with bacterial or fungal invasion. These findings are usually limited to the ileum, cecum, ascending colon, and appendix. The syndrome occurs in a select patient population who generally have 1) a hematologic malignancy, 2) neutropenia, 3) thrombocytopenia, 4) a recent course of chemotherapy, and 5) a recent course of antibiotics. This syndrome also can ari

Neutropenic enterocolitis has been previously described only by case reports and literature reviews. Of 499 adults with acute leukemia seen over a 23-year period (1962 to 1985), 13 cases (2.6%) of neutropenic enterocolitis have been reported. Eleven of these 13 patients were profoundly neutropenic (mean white blood cell count, 472/cu mm) and developed abdominal symptoms during either initial induction or relapse of acute leukemia. Histologic confirmation was available in ten cases, five cases after surgical resection and five cases at autopsy after nonoperative management. Three patients with

Neutropenic enterocolitis (NEC) is a heterogeneous disease of the gastrointestinal tract with systemic response, that corresponds to a severe and life-threatening clinical condition in immunocompromised patients, especially in childhood cancer. The pathologic features are poorly understood, although its multifactorial cause of NEC is well established and it is associated with the cytotoxic effects of the chemotherapy agents used and recognized by the classic triad of fever, neutropenia, and abdominal pain, secondary to gastrointestinal injuries that alters mucosal permeability and helps intram

Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) is an unusual complication of neutropenia. Its presentation is dramatic, treatment is controversial, and the outcome may be devastating. The available literature about this entity is mainly case reports and autopsy studies. We have recently performed a celiotomy on a patient who developed sepsis and an acute surgical abdomen three days following chemotherapy and radiotherapy for a metastatic adenocarcinoma with no known primary tumor. At surgery he was found to have a boggy right and recto-sigmoid colon with a grossly normal transverse colon. Intraoperative colon

Neutropenic enterocolitis, also known as typhlitis or ileocecal syndrome, in leukemic patients undergoing chemotherapy has a high reported mortality. A recent increase in the incidence of neutropenic enterocolitis is associated with aggressive chemotherapy for acute leukemia. In this report, we report the incidence, diagnosis, and treatment of neutropenic enterocolitis during low-dose DCMP and high-dose DCMP regimen for 95 adults with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia, and review the literature pertaining appropriate medical and surgical management, and method of prevention. Finally we propose the

Neutropenic enterocolitis (typhlitis) is an unusual acute complication of neutropenia, most often associated with leukaemia and lymphoma and characterized by segmental caecal and ascending colonic ulceration that may progress to necrosis, perforation, and septicaemia. We present a unique case of an 8-year-old girl with recently diagnosed infectious mononucleosis having findings consistent with typhlitis on abdominal CT.

BACKGROUND: Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) is characterized by fever, abdominal pain, and neutropenia. Observed most commonly in relation to solid, hematologic, and lymphoproliferative malignant tumors and their treatment, this disease entity may involve a wide area of the gastrointestinal tract. We report the first case of NE with isolated appendiceal involvement in a non-oncologic neutropenic patient who was managed successfully medically. In addition, we formally recognize neutropenic appendicitis as a variant of NE and differentiate it from acute non-neutropenic appendicitis.

In a series of 320 patients with lymphoid neoplasms treated with polychemotherapy, three patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and one with myeloma were diagnosed as having neutropenic enterocolitis (NEC). All patients were adult, all had received multiple chemotherapeutic drugs and, during neutropenia, they had clinically presented with fever and abdominal pain, generally in the right lower quadrant. The diagnosis was clinical in all cases, and the imaging techniques provided only the suspicion of retro-cecal abscess in one of them. Two patients were operated on because of the development of f

Three cases of neutropenic enterocolitis are described. This unusual condition occurs almost exclusively in neutropenic patients and has a fulminating course which is almost invariably fatal without surgical intervention. The lesion is centered on the caecum and hitherto its pathogenesis has been unclear, partly because most studies have been performed on material obtained at necropsy. In these three patients, all of whom were treated surgically, Clostridium septicum was identified by specific immunofluorescence in the bowel wall of the resected specimens. Two patients also had C septicum sept

Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) is a medical emergency that occurs in neutropenic patients characterized by diffuse circumferential mural thickening predominantly involving the cecum. It is not easily differentiated from various other abdominal conditions (i.e., appendicitis, intussusception, ischemic colitis, small bowel obstruction, pseudomembranous colitis, and viral gastroenteritis), but clinicians should be aware of the diagnostic criteria in order to assist with prompt diagnosis. Although standard treatment has yet to be established, it is necessary to initiate early supportive care to re

Seminoma and sarcoidosis do not seem to be associated diseases, judging from epidemiologic data. The presence of these two diseases in the patient whose case is reported may have been coincidental. It was observed, however, that when the testis tumor appeared in this patient, the longstanding sarcoid lesions significantly increased. The patient developed neutropenic enterocolitis after chemotherapy for a non-hematologic malignancy.

Neutropenic enterocolitis (NE) is a deadly ileocecal-based disease seen in patients with a recent history of chemotherapy. As histology is not included in the current diagnostic criteria, the pathologic features of NE are poorly understood. We undertook a multi-institutional study of NE, and report helpful clinical clues, such as immunosuppression (n=20/20), recent chemotherapy (n=17/18), neutropenia (n=16/18) gastrointestinal symptoms (n=19/19), abnormal imaging studies of the cecum/right colon (n=11/14), and positive microbiological studies (n=13/15). Fever (n=9/15) and sepsis (n=8/16) were

Neutropenic enterocolitis is an acute, life-threatening inflammation of the small and large bowel, often seen in children with malignancies during periods of prolonged or severe neutropenia. During the period 1990-1995, 180 children were treated at the authors' center for acute lymphoblastic leukemia using a standard chemotherapy protocol. Among them, 11 children (6.1%) aged 4 to 12 years, were diagnosed clinically to have neutropenic enterocolitis. Eight had severe neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count < 10(8)/L and 5 had prolonged neutropenia (> 7 days duration). The symptoms included diffu

Neutropenic enterocolitis (also termed typhlitis) is an acute necrotizing process involving segments of the large and small intestine that occurs in the setting of agranulocytosis, most commonly in patients with acute leukemia. Rapid diagnosis and treatment is necessary for survival. We present a patient in whom abdominal ultrasonography revealed evidence of bowel wall thickening and ascites, confirming the diagnosis of neutropenic enterocolitis. Sonography offers a rapid, safe, and noninvasive means of diagnosis for this condition.

Neutropenic enterocolitis is a necrotizing inflammatory process with intramural infection that occurs predominantly in neutropenic patients. This syndrome is most frequently observed after chemotherapy for hematologic and solid tissue malignancies, but it can also be observed in a number of other clinical settings as well. Neutropenic enterocolitis can be a rare presenting complication of acute leukemia. We report a case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia that presented with abdominal pain due to neutropenic enterocolitis. The diagnostic and treatment challenges associated with this manner of pre
