Dengue is an acute mosquito-borne viral disease widespread throughout tropical regions. Cyclical epidemics on top of high endemic dengue incidence strain many healthcare systems. While low population immunity to the four dengue viruses (DENVs) is often cited as the cause of epidemics, not all new DENV introductions have caused epidemics. Moreover, the role of DENV genetics in epidemic emergence has remained understudied. This review examines how genetic changes affect DENV fitness and links specific epidemics to these changes, focusing especially on those where the biological functions altered…

This article discusses four epidemics of fatal infectious diseases: a 1993 cluster of deaths among previously healthy persons in the southwestern United States that led to the identification of a new clinical syndrome, hantavirus pulmonary syndrome; the first epidemic of Ebola hemorrhagic fever identified in nearly two decades occurring in 1995 in Zaire, which resulted in 317 cases with a mortality rate of 77%; an outbreak of Legionnaires' disease among cruise ship passengers in 1994; and a 1989 cluster of illnesses among nonhuman primates in Reston, Virginia leading to the identification of a…

Epidemics and mortality in 15th and 16th century Florence, Italy, were investigated by use of records of the government-sponsored Dowry Fund. These records contain the date of birth, date of investment, and date of dowry payment or death of 19,000 girls and women. Major epidemics ("plagues") occurred repeatedly. The most severe were in 1430, 1437-38, 1449-50, 1478-79, and 1527-31. Annual death rates of girls enrolled in the Dowry Fund increased by 5 to 10 times in each of these periods. During the last period, at least 20-25 per cent of the population of Florence is likely to have died. Recurr…

The global rise in the use of methamphetamine has been documented to have reached epidemic proportions. Researchers have focussed on the social implications of the epidemic. A typical drug use cycle consists of concealed drugs use after initiation, addiction, treatment-recovery-relapse cycle, whose dynamics are not well understood. The model by White and Comiskey [41], on heroin epidemics, treatment and ODE modelling, is modified to model the dynamics of methamphetamine use in a South African province. The analysis of the model is presented in terms of the methamphetamine epidemic threshold R(…

In 1977, the world witnessed both the eradication of smallpox and the beginning of the modern age of genomics. Over the following half-century, 7 epidemic viruses of international concern galvanized virologists across the globe and led to increasingly extensive virus genome sequencing. These sequencing efforts exerted over periods of rapid adaptation of viruses to new hosts, in particular, humans provide insight into the molecular mechanisms underpinning virus evolution. Investment in virus genome sequencing was dramatically increased by the unprecedented support for phylogenomic analyses duri

Our review article aimed for analysis of pathogenesis, diagnostyics and treatment of polyneuropathies manifesting in the course of COVID-19. The reasons for hyposmia and taste disturbances are considered in the subjects with this coronavirus infection as well as relationship between these clinical manifestations and severity of the viral infection. Special attention is given to description of autoimmune mechanisms of Guillain-Barré syndrome and polyneuropathies of critical conditions associated with COVID-19. Some data report about clinical deterioration of diabetic and alcoholic neuropathy du

This article draws on Charles Rosenberg's classic essay "What Is an Epidemic?" (1989) to reflect on the complex narrative structures and temporalities of epidemics as they are experienced and storied. We begin with an analysis of Rosenberg's use of Albert Camus's The Plague and a discussion of how epidemics have been modeled in literature and in epidemiology concomitantly. Then, we argue that Charles Rosenberg's characterization of epidemics as events bounded in time that display narrative and epidemiological purity fails to account for the reinvention of life within health crises. Adopting th…

We examine non-typhoidal Salmonella (S. Typhimurium or STM) epidemics as complex systems, driven by evolution and interactions of diverse microbial strains, and focus on emergence of successful strains. Our findings challenge the established view that seasonal epidemics are associated with random sets of co-circulating STM genotypes. We use high-resolution molecular genotyping data comprising 17,107 STM isolates representing nine consecutive seasonal epidemics in Australia, genotyped by multiple-locus variable-number tandem-repeats analysis (MLVA). From these data, we infer weighted undirected…

Thalidomide tragedy and the subsequent epidemics of congenital anomalies is one of the most tragic but also enlightening chapters in the history of modern medicine. Many thousands of children were born with various anomalies - especially with limb deformities - because of the mass usage of thalidomide by pregnant women. The numbers of the spontaneous abortions and fetal deaths will remain unknown forever. In year 2012 we have a sad 50th anniversary of final recognition of thalidomide teratogenous potential. The causes of this tragedy and subsequent actions are summarized in our text.Key words:…

We describe the predictions of an analytically tractable stochastic model for cholera epidemics following a single initial outbreak. The exact model relies on a set of assumptions that may restrict the generality of the approach and yet provides a realm of powerful tools and results. Without resorting to the depletion of susceptible individuals, as usually assumed in deterministic susceptible-infected-recovered models, we show that a simple stochastic equation for the number of ill individuals provides a mechanism for the decay of the epidemics occurring on the typical time scale of seasonalit…

Epidemics of meningococcal meningitis are common in several African countries, including Benin. In northern Benin, part of the "meningitis belt", incidence has been increasing over the past decade, and lethality is high. The A and C serogroups are the primary causal agents. Recently, the appearance of the W135 strain in bordering countries induced considerable fear and necessitated more rigorous epidemiological surveillance in the north. Little epidemiologic information on the course and trends of these epidemics is available. The goal of this article is to describe the pattern of these outbre…
