BACKGROUND: Epidrum (ED) is a device to facilitate the epidural anesthesia procedure. Using ED, we can visually confirm the needle's penetration into the epidural space by collapse of the diaphragm. We investigated the usefulness of ED for teaching identification of the epidural space.

Epidural venography is a simple and safe procedure for the diagnosis of herniated intervertebral disc and other disease of the epidural space. It is especially useful in symptomatic patients with normal or equivocal myelographic findings. The accuracy rate of positive venograms is 88.2% in this series of 58 patients. Five illustrative cases are presented.

The head and vertebral column from two human cadavers were injected with a solution of gelatin and gadolinium (Dotarem) and imaged using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Comparisons between gross anatomic slices and corresponding images of the lumbar vertebral column confirmed the usefulness of a paramagnetic agent for visualising the epidural venous plexus. This technique provides accurate images of the posterior longitudinal ligament.

A broken epidural catheter with a retained fragment in the spinal canal is a rare complication of an otherwise low-risk procedure. We present a case of a 37-year-old post-partum female with a fractured epidural catheter with a retained fragment in the epidural space, after epidural anaesthesia using a midline L3/L4 approach.
