We have analyzed the role of the Slit family of repellent axon guidance molecules in the patterning of the axonal projections of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) within the embryonic rat diencephalon and whether the slits can account for a repellent activity for retinal axons released by hypothalamus and epithalamus. At the time RGC axons extend over the diencephalon, slit1 and slit2 are expressed in hypothalamus and epithalamus but not in the lateral part of dorsal thalamus, a retinal target. slit3 expression is low or undetectable. The Slit receptors robo2, and to a limited extent robo1, are ex…

The pineal gland is a small pinecone-shaped and functionally endocrine structure located in the epithalamus region. Developmentally, the pineal gland is considered as a part of the epithalamus. It plays a role in the entrainment of the circadian rhythms of an organism by producing melatonin, a functionally important hormone. Lesions of the pineal region are rare compared to other parts of the brain. A lesion may be tumorous or non-tumorous in nature. The most common lesions are tumors that are pineal parenchymal tumors (PPT) in origin. Gliomas are the second most common tumors in the pineal re…

Pineal cysts (PCs) are benign and often asymptomatic lesions of the pineal region that are typically small and do not change in size over time. PCs appear as small, well circumscribed, unilocular masses that either reside within or completely replace the pineal gland. This article reviews and discusses the characteristic features of PCs-clinical, histological, and identifiable by various imaging modalities-which assist clinicians in narrowing the differential diagnosis for pineal lesions.

The peptidergic melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) system was investigated by immunocytochemistry in several birds. MCH perikarya were foun … ypothalamic area, and the infundibular region. Some fibers also reached the dorsal thalamus and the epithalamus. The median eminence contained only sparse projections, and the posterior pituitary was not labeled. Thus, in birds, a neurohormonal role for MCH is not likely. Immunoreactive fibers were observed in other regions, such as the intercollicular nucleu …

The parapineal is present in many teleost families, while it is absent in several others. To find out why the parapineal is absent at adult stages in the latter families, the development of the epithalamus was examined in the medaka fish (Oryzias latipes). For this purpose, a green fluorescent protein-transgenic medaka line, in which the pineal complex (pineal and parapineal) is visible fluorescently, was used. We found that a distinct parapineal was present in the roof plate at early developmental stages. Subsequently, however, the parapineal and the associated roof plate began to be incorpor…

The cytoarchitecture of nuclei in the preoptic area, ventral thalamus, dorsal thalamus, epithalamus, hypothalamus, posterior tuberculum, synencephalon, and pretectum and the accessory optic nuclei was analyzed in a perciform teleost, the sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax, by using serial sections stained with cresyl-violet. In general, the cytoarchitecture of the preoptic area, ventral and dorsal thalamus, epithalamus, and synencephalon resembles the histological pattern of other teleosts. However, the parvocellular preoptic nucleus of sea bass has been subdivided into parvocellular and anterovent…

BACKGROUND: The transcription factor ΔFOSB, acting in the nucleus accumbens, has been shown to control transcriptional and behavioral respon … efrontal- and retrosplenial cortex-centered networks, but also generated specific FC signatures for epithalamus (habenula) and dopaminergic/serotonergic centers, respectively. Analysis of dynamic FC patterns showed that increasing ΔFOSB essentially altered responsivity to morphine and uncovered striking modifications of the roles of the epithalamus and amygda …

The papillary tumor of the pineal region (PTPR) is a rare neuroepithelial tumor originating from specialized ependymocytes. It primarily affects structures within the pineal region, including the pineal gland, epithalamus, quadrigeminal cistern, and posterior wall of the third ventricle. Here, we present a series of four cases characterized by symptoms associated with obstructive hydrocephalus such as headaches, seizures, visual disturbances, gait disturbances, and Parinaud syndrome. Imaging studies revealed lesions in the pineal region, prompting surgical intervention. Histopathological exami…

The vertebrate brain is an immensely complex structure, which exhibits numerous morphological and functional asymmetries. The best described brain asymmetries are found in the diencephalic epithalamus, where the habenulae and the dorso-laterally adjacent pineal complex are lateralized in many species. Research in the past decade has shed light on the establishment of the laterality of these structures as well as their asymmetry per se. In particular work in zebrafish (Danio rerio) has substantially contributed to our understanding, which genetic pathways are involved in these processes. The Wn…

This paper presents an overview on the epithalamus of vertebrates, with particular reference to the pineal and to the asymmetrical organization of the habenular nuclei in lower vertebrates. The relationship between the pineal and the habenulae in the course of phylogenesis is here emphasized, taking data in the frog as example. Altogether the data support the hypothesis, put forward also in earlier studies, of a correlation of habenular asymmetry in lower vertebrates with phylogenetic modification of the pineal complex. The present re-visitation was also stimulated by recent data on the asymme…

The paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT) is a part of epithalamus and sends outputs to emotion-related brain areas such as the medial prefrontal cortex, nucleus accumbens, and amygdala. Various functional roles of the PVT in emotion-related behaviors are drawing attention. Here, we investigated the effect of manipulation of PVT neurons on the firing patterns of medial prefrontal cortical (mPFC) neurons and depression-like behavior. Extracellular single-unit recordings revealed that acute activation of PVT neurons by hM3Dq, an activation type of designer receptors exclusively activated by des…

We have investigated the distribution of cholinergic perikarya and fibers in the brain of the pigeon (Columba livia). With this aim, pigeon … ion of the cholinergic systems in many regions of the avian brain (such as the basal forebrain, the epithalamus, the isthmus, and the hindbrain) is much like that in reptiles and mammals. In contrast, however, birds appear largely to lack intrinsic cholinergic neurons in the dorsal ("neocortex-like") parts of the telencephalon.

The thalamus is considered an important interface between the ventral striatopallidum and the dorsal striatum, and may therefore contribute to compulsive drug-seeking behaviour. Recent evidence suggests that the paraventricular thalamus (PVT), a dorsal midline thalamic nucleus, and the mediodorsal thalamus (MD) are involved in drug self-administration and respond to drug-associated cues. At present, however, the role of these thalamic regions in mediating cue-induced reinstatement of cocaine-seeking is unclear. Similarly, the habenula complex, part of the epithalamus, has been implicated in ni…

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Brain cholinergic denervation is a major feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). We revi … tructures were also in DLB. Novel analysis revealed evidence of metathalamic denervation in AD, and epithalamus, premotor/sensorimotor cortical, and striatal losses in DLB. Topographically distinct cortical and subcortical cholinergic lesions can distinguish AD and DLB, and new structures have been highlighted here. Differential vulnerability of specific chol …
