Evaluation of research ethics committees in Turkey.

In Turkey, there was no legal regulation of research on human beings until 1993. In that year "the amendment relating to drug researches" was issued. The main objectives of the regulation are to establish a central ethics committee and local ethics committees, and to provide administrative control. There are no compulsory clinical ethics lectures in the medical curriculum, so it is also proposed that research ethics committees (RECs) play a central educational role by helping physicians to be aware of moral problems and by contributing to the training of research teams.

Enhancing patients' autonomy by involving them in research ethics committees.

OBJECTIVE: Although clinical trial participants are the most affected by research ethics committee's decisions, they are not formally represented on Swiss committees. We aimed to find out what patients think about the idea of being members of such committees. DESIGN: Latent thematic analysis was used to analyse the interviews. SETTING: Patients were recruited in a Swiss university hospital. PARTICIPANTS: The study involved 26 patients suffering from diabetes or gout. INTERVENTIONS: We conducted semi-structured interviews. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We explored what patients think of being est

A descriptive study of healthcare ethics consultants in Canada: results of a national survey.

As part of a project to examine health care ethics consultation in Canada, we surveyed individuals who were considered by themselves or others to play a significant role in health care ethics consultation. Since one goal of the project was to examine the education and abilities necessary for consultants, we sought to determine the qualifications and skills currently possessed by persons considered to be ethics consultants. For the purposes of the questionnaire, 'health care ethics consultation' was defined broadly to include consultation on ethical issues in clinical care or in clinical resear

In the context of clinical research, the Data Protection Impact Assessment (DPIA), as required by Article 35 of the GDPR 2016/679, is an essential tool to ensure the compliant and responsible processing of personal data, particularly health and genetic data. The adoption of the DPIA addresses the need to safeguard the fundamental rights and freedoms of data subjects in high-risk scenarios, such as multicenter studies and the use of innovative technologies. This article analyzes the ethical, regulatory, and organizational value of the DPIA in clinical trials, highlighting operational challenges

Down's syndrome screening is unethical: views of today's research ethics committees.

BACKGROUND: Screening for Down's syndrome forms part of routine obstetric practice. Ethical considerations relating to genetic screening form a major part of the workload of research ethics committees. This study investigated the attitudes of research ethics committee members to several conditions varying in clinical severity and prognosis, including Down's syndrome. METHODS: The members of 40 randomly chosen research ethics committees were surveyed. A simple questionnaire comprising 19 clinical scenarios based around four "clinical" conditions was designed to review conditions that were pote

Using Ethics Committees to Justify Force-Feeding Political Prisoners in Israel.

Thousands of Palestinian prisoners are held in Israeli prisons without trial. For some of them, engaging in hunger strikes is the last resort in opposing unlawful detention and inhumane prison conditions. While mainstream bioethics deliberation, reasonable arguments, and international legal and medical professional declarations prohibit force-feeding, local ethical deliberations, professional medical guidelines, and legislation allow the use of medical judgment and clinical ethics committees to force-feed these prisoners. Until now, Israeli physicians have refused to do so, but this may change

The MGTX experience: challenges in planning and executing an international, multicenter clinical trial.

We present our experience planning and launching a multinational, NIH/NINDS funded study of thymectomy in myasthenia gravis. We highlight the additional steps required for international sites and analyze and contrast the time investment required to bring U.S. and non-U.S. sites into full regulatory compliance. Results show the mean time for non-U.S. centers to achieve regulatory approval was significantly longer (mean 13.4+/0.96 [corrected] months) than for U.S. sites (9.67+/0.74 [corrected] months; p=0.003, [corrected] t-test). The delay for non-U.S. sites was mainly attributable to Federalwi
