The inoculation of viruses into the placenta of fetectomized rats induces the development of malignant tumors from extraembryonic fetal membranes. The same membrane--visceral yolk sac--gives rise to benign teratomas if displaced outside the uterus after fetectomy. Moreover, the transplantation of 3 to 7 day old embroys under the kidney capsule of adult mice gives rise of malignant teratocarcinoma. The methods to induction of these tumors are described.

The chick embryo chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) is a highly vascularized extraembryonic membrane. Because of its ease of accessibility, extensive vascularization and immunodeficient environment, the CAM has been broadly used in the oncology, biology, pharmacy, and tissue regeneration research. The present review summarizes the application of the CAM in neurosurgery disease research. We focused on the use of the CAM as an assay for the research of glioma, vascular anomalies, Moyamoya Disease, and the blood-brain barrier.

Up to now there has been only a method available for testing the antihaemorrhagic activity of plant extracts, in which chicken embryos had to be transferred to a special container on the fifth day of incubation. Furthermore, the test could not be conducted on the extraembryonal circulatory system until two days later. In the test method described here the embryos remain inside the egg. After removal of the eggshell through the air cell and removal of the inner shell membrane, direct access to the extraembryonal circulatory system is possible, minimising external influences on the test system.

Specific staining with fluorescein-labelled immune serum was used to study the progress of mumps virus infection in a series of embryos harvested at daily intervals.
