Surgical outcomes of facial nerve hemangiomas in temporal bones.

OBJECTIVE: To report surgical outcomes of 15 cases who had facial nerve hemangiomas. METHODS: All cases underwent complete removal of hemangiomas, and preservation of nerve integrity was attempted. The postoperative outcomes of facial nerve was assessed. RESULTS: Nerve integrity was successfully preserved in 10 cases, all of which maintained or recovered to Grade I or Grade II, and facial nerve was sacrificed in 5 cases, who recovered to Grade III or Grade IV. CONCLUSIONS: When possible, facial nerve preservation should be attempted, which was critical to yield better outcomes of facial ner

[Osteosynthesis in facial bones: silicon nitride ceramic as material].

BACKGROUND: The favorable properties of silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic, such as high stability and biocompatibility suggest its biomedical use as an implant material. The aim of this study was to test its suitability for osteosynthesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A Si3N4 prototype minifixation system was manufactured and implanted for osteosynthesis of artificial frontal bone defects in three minipigs. After 3 months, histological sections, CT and MRI scans were obtained. Finite element modeling (FEM) was used to simulate stresses and strains on Si3N4 miniplates and screws to calculate survival

[Black bone disease of the skull and facial bones].

INTRODUCTION: We report the case of a patient with a craniofacial black bone disease. This was discovered accidentally during a coronal approach. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old patient was referred to our unit for facial palsy having appeared 10 years before. Rehabilitation of the facial palsy was performed with a lengthening temporal myoplasty and lengthening of the upper eyelid elevator. An unusual black color of the skull was observed at incision of the coronal approach. Subperiostal dissection of skull and malars confirmed the presence of a black bone disease. A postoperative history revealed

Major osteotomies of the cranium, facial bones, and mandible.

This paper describes the present status of osteotomies of the facial skeletal framework, including craniofacial surgery, in Japan based on patients seen at the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Hospital. It presents our experience with the correction of craniofacial dysostosis, orbital hypertelorism, orbital hypotelorism, untreated plagiocephaly, craniostenosis, cleft lip deformity, prognathism, and asymmetry of the mandible. There are a few departments skillfully performing such osteotomies in Japan, but it cannot yet be said that the procedures are well developed here. I myself have applied them in

Facial asymmetry in young adults with condylar hyperplasia-unusual changes in the facial bones.

Facial asymmetry can be caused by various pathological conditions, condylar hyperplasia (CH) is one of such condition, characterized by unilateral or bilateral mandibular condylar overgrowth, causing facial asymmetry, mandibular deviation, malocclusion and functional impairment. Advanced imaging and scintigraphic methods, helps the clinicians in diagnosing and monitoring its macroscopic aspects. Here we report three interesting and illustrative cases of facial asymmetry with unilateral CH discussing the unusual changes in the facial bones.

Vascularization of the facial bones by the facial artery: implications for full face allotransplantation.

BACKGROUND: The maxillary artery is recognized as the main vascular supply of the facial bones; nonetheless, clinical evidence supports a codominant role for the facial artery. This study explores the extent of the facial skeleton within a facial allograft that can be harvested based on the facial artery. METHODS: Twenty-three cadaver heads were used in this study. In 12 heads, the facial, superficial temporal, and maxillary arteries were injected. In one head, facial artery angiography was performed. Ten facial allografts were raised. The soft tissues were dissected to show the arterial anas…

Unique imaging findings in the facial bones of renal osteodystrophy.

Facial skeletal changes associated with hyperparathyroidism assume 3 radiographic patterns: osteitis fibrosa cystica, fibrous dysplasia, and leontiasis ossea. The 3rd pattern is unique to renal osteodystrophy. We report a case of uremic leontiasis ossea with CT images illustrating significant hypertrophy of the jaws with serpiginous tunneling within the bone and poor visualization of the cortical bone.

[X-ray manifestations of fibrous dysplasia of the facial bones].

The paper is concerned with roentgenological characterization of mono- and poly-osseous fibrous dysplasia in cranial facial bones of 60 persons of both sexes and at a different age, of them 14 persons were under 14. Mono-osseous lesions after radical operations were shown to be capable of continued growth of rearranged osseous tissue in those cases when the periosteum was not completely removed.

Dental injuries in patients associated with fracture of facial bones.

PURPOSE: To assess different types of dental injuries associated with facial bone fractures. METHOD: One hundred dentate patients were selected randomly of all age and gender who had maxillofacial trauma only and having dental injury in association with facial bones fractures were included. They were thoroughly examined for injury/fracture to facial region as well as for dental injuries (teeth). Tooth injuries were noted according to Ellis classification. The data was collected, compiled, and put to statistical analysis. RESULTS: Dental injuries were more in females than males found to be st…

Morphometric properties of the facial nerve in fetal temporal bones.

OBJECTIVES: The main aim of the study was to examine the development and course of the facial nerve within fetal temporal bones from an anatomical and neuro-otological perspective. METHODS: The study was conducted on 32 temporal bones from obtained fetuses (7 females, 9 male), on a mean gestational age of 26.75 ± 4.36 (range, 20-34) weeks from the collection of the Anatomy Department of Medicine Faculty. All the measurements were collected with a digital image analysis software. RESULTS: Neither male/female nor right/left significant differences were observed in relation with the algebraic d

Experimental study on the influence of facial muscle activity on the facial mesostructure bones in rabbits.

UNLABELLED: Based on the functional matrix concept, scientists developed the hypothesis that soft tissue acting on certain bone pieces determines the process of facial growth. The possibility to modify muscle influence in the phase of facial development, or in postoperative of corrective surgery is of great preventive importance and it should be better investigated, since it could reduce the number and impact of these procedures. STUDY DESIGN: experimental in rabbits. AIM: to estimate the relevance of facial muscle activity on facial bones in lab rabbits. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 37 rabbits o…
