Some essential aspects of families with malnourished infants being treated in the Nutritional Rehabilitation Centers managed by the Corporation for Infant Nutrition (CONIN) of Santiago, Chile, were studied in depth. The purpose was to identify and quantify some variables of the family environment as a previous necessary step for the application of an adequate social treatment. The design used is of a descriptive nature. The sample is representative of two of the Centers. The data obtained revealed the following: 1) the families belonged, without exception, to a low socioeconomic level, 21% in

Numerous clinical syndromes associated with multiple polypoid lesions of the gastrointestinal tract have been described. These syndromes generally have two striking characteristics: 1) Most of them are familial with the disease being inherited as a mendelian autosomal dominant trait, and 2) most of the affected patients have moderate to marked propensity to develop gastrointestinal carcinoma, usually of the large bowel. Whereas previously many of these syndromes were thought to be well-defined entities, it now appears that there is overlap between certain of them such that they appear more sim

The main aim of the study was an attempt to develop and present characteristics of rapes that occurred in the family, with consideration of the modus operandi of the perpetrators according to the degree of kinship, their motivational background, the circumstances under which the acts were committed, and the psychosocial profile of the perpetrator and the victim. Moreover, an attempt was made to isolate the risk factors for intra-familial rapes, with the possibility of using them in preventive measures. The study was conducted based on empirical material from court cases in which the perpetrato

Reports on familial occurrence of essential thrombocythemia (ET) are scanty. Many clinical and hematological aspects of familial ET have not been clarified yet. We studied 16 family members in four successive generations. By laboratory tests and bone marrow examination they were divided into a non-thrombocythemia group (n = 5) and into ET patients (n = 11). Five ET patients were asymptomatic, three patients had both vaso-occlusive and hemorrhagic symptoms, and three patients only vaso-occlusive symptoms. The platelet count ranged from 500 to 1700 x 10(9)/l. Symptoms correlated with age but not

Family history is a major risk factor for breast cancer; approximately 5-10% cases of breast cancer are associated with a family history. Herein, we investigated the link between family history and breast cancer features to elucidate the importance of family history in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. Data from 10,549 patients with breast cancer were collected from 2014 to 2017. Detailed information about the family history of the patients including the degree and number of relatives affected and the types of cancer was recorded. The tumors were pathologically and clinically class

This study was conducted to acquire information as to the clinicopathological characteristics of breast cancer patients with family history. Of 583 patients with breast cancer, 60 (10.3%) had family history in at least one relative within the second-degree. The affected family member was most frequently a sister (43%), followed by the mother (23%) and an aunt (20%). Comparison of the data for the patients between with and without family history revealed no significant differences for any of mean age, menopausal status, histological type, histological staging, and estrogen receptor status. During its development, family practice in Taiwan has been housed at the university/college hospitals, and different settings have served as the main bases for service and teaching. To demonstrate the progress made in the family medicine clinic at the Chung Shan Medical College Hospital and to evaluate the appropriateness of this kind of family practice setting, our patient population of 616 was investigated. There were 5177 patient encounters during the period from September 1987 to August 1989. Of 616 patients, 52.3% were male, the average age was 38.5 years, 85.1% lived in Taichung, where t

Oral lichen planus (OLP) is one of the most common oral mucosa diseases; however, familial OLP is uncommon. The present study reported and analyzed patients with familial OLP (n=18) in eight different Chinese families between January 1, 2012 and December 31, 2013. Parameters analyzed include gender, age at diagnosis, lesion distribution and lesion type. The follow-up period for each patient was a minimum of 1 year. In this survey, 18/88 individuals in the eight families were affected. Females were more frequently affected, and the female to male ratio for familial OLP (2.2:1) was higher compar

BACKGROUND: Familial primary hyperparathyroidism is associated with tumor-susceptibility syndromes, which are unrelated to mutations in the calcium receptor gene. This study describes parathyroidectomy in a kindred with hypercalcemia due to a heterozygous point mutation in the calcium receptor gene.
METHODS: Seventeen family members were studied, and postoperative follow-up averaged 5.1 years.
RESULTS: Radical parathyroid resection with total parathyroid remnants of 10 to 20 mg or total parathyroidectomy with autotransplantation normalized the serum calcium and parathyroid hormone values in

In 2 samples of sons of alcoholics (family history positive for alcoholism; FHP: N = 74 & N = 72), cluster analyses identified 3 subtypes of familial vulnerability: 1 with low levels of familial psychopathology (FHP-LP) and moderate levels of familial alcoholism; a 2nd with high levels of familial antisocial personality (FHP-ASP), violence, and alcoholism; and a 3rd with high levels of familial depression (FHP-DEP), mania, anxiety disorder, and alcoholism. Compared with family history negative (FHN) participants (N = 106), FHP offspring had higher levels of alcohol problems. FHP-ASP offspring

Familial hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (fHLH) comprises a group of autosomal recessive disorders characterized by germline loss-of-function variants that negatively impact lymphocyte cytotoxicity. These disorders exhibit variable clinical presentations, most often in association with severe hyperinflammation. fHLH is diagnosed through clinical and laboratory assessments as well as genetic testing and immunologic assays. In the absence of therapy to control the hyperactive immune system, fHLH is generally fatal. Treatment has historically taken the form of cytotoxic chemotherapy and/or imm

BACKGROUND: Otosclerosis is a focal lesion of the inner ear. The role of genetic factors in the pathogenesis of otosclerosis has received increasing attention. We analyzed the clinical manifestations, inheritance pattern, and pathogenic genes in a family with otosclerosis.
METHODS: We collected clinical data and generated a family pedigree. High-throughput second-generation sequencing technology was used to identify candidate genes by performing whole-exome sequencing of 7 members of the family, and Sanger sequencing was performed to validate candidate gene mutations in the 7 family members.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is presently an important health issue worldwide. This condition shows phenotypic and genetic variations among affected people, and clinical and genetic data on FH are critical for effective diagnosis and management. Korean FH patients have relatively low levels of cholesterol and prevalence of xanthoma than patients from other countries, as determined by previous studies. The best predictive value of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) for pathogenic mutations is suggested as 225 mg/dL. Many known and novel mutations on LDLR and some on APOB or PCSK9

Adequate housing is a basic human right and an important determinant of environmental health. Little research has documented the housing quality of immigrant Latino farmworker families. This analysis uses data from four surveys of North Carolina farmworker communities conducted in 2001 and 2003 to document aspects of housing quality that could affect farmworker family health. Three housing domains are considered: dwelling characteristics, household characteristics, and household behaviors. Most farmworker families live in mobile homes, and few own their dwellings. Many are located near agricul
