Dissemination of cefotaxime-M-producing Escherichia coli isolates in poultry farms, but not swine farms, in China.

The objective of this study was to investigate the distribution of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli isolates in swine and poultry farms in China. Rectal or cloaca swabs of swine and chicken were collected from four province-level regions of China, and E. coli isolates were recovered and tested for antimicrobial susceptibility. The isolates producing ESBLs were further characterized by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and sequence analysis of genes encoding β -lactamases and class I integrons. In total, 156 and 224 E. coli isolates were recovered from recta…

Assessing pig farm biosecurity measures for the control of Salmonella on European farms.

Salmonella spp. is a common zoonotic pathogen, causing gastrointestinal infections in people. Pigs and pig meat are a major source of infection. Although farm biosecurity is believed to be important for controlling Salmonella transmission, robust evidence is lacking on which measures are most effective. This study enrolled 250 pig farms across nine European countries. From each farm, 20 pooled faecal samples (or similar information) were collected and analysed for Salmonella presence. Based on the proportion of positive results, farms were categorised as at higher or lower Salmonella risk, and…

Spatial transmission risk during the 2007-2010 Q fever epidemic in The Netherlands: Analysis of the farm-to-farm and farm-to-resident transmission.

Between 2007 and 2010 a Q fever epidemic in Dutch dairy goat farms caused a large Q fever outbreak in human residents in the southern part of the Netherlands. Here we characterize the transmission of Coxiella burnetii, the aetiological agent of Q fever, between infected and susceptible dairy goat farms by estimating a spatial transmission kernel. In addition, we characterize the zoonotic transmission of C. burnetii by estimating the spatial kernel for transmission from infected farms to neighbouring residents. Whereas the range of between-farm transmission is comparable to the scale of the Net…

Avian Reoviruses in Poultry Farms from Brazil.

Avian reovirus (ARV) is highly disseminated in commercial Brazilian poultry farms, causing arthritis/tenosynovitis, runting-stunting syndrome, and malabsorption syndrome in different meat- and egg-type birds (breeders, broilers, grillers, and layers). In Brazil, ARV infection was first described in broilers in the 1970s but was not considered an important poultry health problem for decades. A more concerning outcome of field infections has been observed in recent years, including condemnations at slaughterhouses because of the unsightly appearance of chicken body parts, mainly the legs. Analys…

Endoparasite control practices on Saskatchewan dairy farms.

A questionnaire was administered to dairy producers in Saskatchewan in 2016 to determine basic pasture management practices, how producers use parasite control products, and attitudes towards the threat of endoparasites. All 161 dairy producers in Saskatchewan were invited to participate and the survey response rate was 39.8% (64/161). Most respondents (78.3%) were not concerned with endoparasites in their cattle or the threat of anthelmintic resistance. Yet 79.7% of producers reported using anthelmintics in all classes of cattle (lactating cows, dry cows, weaned heifers, and bred heifers). Th

Farming without Glyphosate?

Recent statements from scientific organisations and court decisions have resulted in widespread public interest and concern over the safety of glyphosate, the most popular and effective herbicide used worldwide. Consequently, glyphosate-based products are under intense scrutiny from governments at all levels. Some jurisdictions have already banned or restricted its use, which will adversely impact international trade in bulk grain commmodities if glyphosate residues are detected. The possibility of farming without glyphosate is becoming an important issue facing the agri-food research and deve

Farm visits and zoonoses.

Recent reports of outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness, such as cryptosporidiosis, associated with visits to farms have drawn attention to the possible risks of acquiring zoonotic infections through contact with farm animals. These risks seem to be small, but it is important that people who work in urban and rural farms, and such establishments as animal sanctuaries where the general public can come into close contact with farm livestock and other animals, should be alerted to the simple precautions needed to prevent transmission of infections.

Characteristics of rabbit farms in southern Benin.

The aim of this study was to provide a comprehensive analysis of rabbit farming in southern Benin. A thorough survey was carried out on a total of eighty (80) rabbit farms, and the data collected from these farms were then analyzed. As a result of this analysis, three (03) distinct groups of farmers were identified and characterized. Group 1 consisted of rabbit farmers who possessed more a university-level education. These individuals raised their rabbits in cement-built structures, in structures constructed from wood, earthen materials, or metal and mainly encountered pathological problems. G…

Chlamydia gallinacea in Brazilian backyard chicken farms.

Avian chlamydiosis is a bacterial infectious disease of birds, considered until recently caused only by Chlamydia psittaci, that now includes the newly described species C. buteonis, C. avium, and C. gallinacea, associated with several avian hosts. Since its recognition as a species in 2014 and having chickens as one of its main hosts, C. gallinacea has already been described in backyard poultry on all continents. The present study aimed to survey by molecular techniques the presence and species of Chlamydia spp. in backyard chickens from three states of the southern region of Brazil (Paraná-P

This study evaluates the prevalence and zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium spp. in sheep farms in Italy. A total of 915 individual faecal samples divided into three different animal categories were collected from 61 sheep farms. Dicrocoeliosis in extensive sheep farms: a survey.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the epidemiological and molecular aspects of dicrocoeliosis in extensive sheep farms. METHODS: From 2013 to 2014, copromicroscopical analyses in 190 dairy sheep farms and anatomo-pathological inspections in six slaughterhouses were carried in Sardinia, Italy. Rectal faecal samples were analyzed using the FLOTAC® method, and anatomo-pathological examinations were based on detecting thickened terminal bile ducts (TTBDs). In addition, genetic analyses were conducted on representative DNA samples of adult Dicrocoelium spp. RESULTS: Ninety-seven (51.1%) out of …

Anthelmintic efficacy on UK Thoroughbred stud farms.

Anthelmintic drugs have been applied indiscriminately to control horse nematodes for over 40 years. We undertook a comprehensive study to investigate efficacy of the four available broad-spectrum anthelmintic drugs on 16 Thoroughbred stud farms using the faecal egg count reduction test. Efficacy against strongyles was determined by calculating the percentage of reduction in faecal egg count between the group mean at Day 0 and Days 14-17 post-treatment and the 95% lower confidence intervals estimated by non-parametric bootstrapping. Individual strongyle faecal egg count reduction tests (n=429) …

Farming for battery metals.

Globally, there is a major shift to electric vehicles to combat climate change and these vehicles are currently powered by lithium-ion batteries that contain nickel cobalt manganese oxide materials. This technological change from internal combustion engines means that demand for battery minerals will need to increase by factors of >20 for the critical metals required for batteries in the next three decades. If this scenario plays out, it will require a dramatic increase in the worldwide capacity to produce nickel, manganese, cobalt, and lithium raw materials of sufficient purity. This demand c

Effect of Farming on Asthma.

In this review, we discuss an immunobiology model of farm exposure towards the protective effect of asthma. Unraveling the protective effect of farming exposure could help develop novel strategies to prevent asthma. Asthma is a chronic airway inflammation that causes coughing, wheezing, chest tightness or shortness of breath. The reasons for the increase in the prevalence of asthma worldwide is still unclear but has been hypothesized to be attributable to westernization/urbanization of rural regions thus resulting in the loss of rural farming environmental. In this review we discuss the effect
