Fasciola hepatica (FH) can lead to important hepatobiliary diseases. Here we present a case of hemobilia associated with biliary FH, which is quite a rare case. The 41-year-old patient, who underwent common bile duct exploration due to hemobilia, was found to have arterial bleeding associated with ulcer caused by a dead parasite in the common bile duct. Hemobilia is a very rare complication associated with FH. When searching for the cause of hemobilia, FH should be considered.

The egg development test is a useful in vitro tool to detect albendazole (ABZ) resistance in Fasciola hepatica. ABZ is the only flukicidal compound with ovicidal activity. A middle aged woman presented with obstructive jaundice of 6 months duration. Radiological investigations revealed multiple pyogenic liver abscesses with the possibility of choledocholithiasis. Glutathione S-transferases (GST's) are widespread in the tissues of the liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, and consist of multiple isozymes. Following purification to apparent homogeneity by affinity chromatography on glutathione agarose, fluke GST's were shown to comprise 2 components with molecular weights of about 25,000. Fluke GST's were immunogenic to rats, but when used as a vaccine conferred no protection on the animals against a challenge infection with F. hepatica metacercariae.
