Nutritional osteomalacia is a metabolic bone disorder common among the Asian female immigrant population in the United Kingdom. We describe the case of a female of Asian origin, who was found to have a unilateral undisplaced pseudofracture of the neck of the femur during pregnancy. Although not operated on the fracture was treated successfully with calcium and vitamin D supplement therapy. Within one month of treatment, the bone pain subsided and she was able to bear full weight. Subsequent radiological follow-up showed the pseudofracture to have healed sufficiently with no evidence of avascul

Fracture of the neck of the femur is a major public health problem within the elderly population of most industrialised countries whose health services are increasingly being taken up with its management. Moreover, within Britain, there is evidence of a real increase in its incidence even allowing for the ageing of the population. A condition whose aetiology is still far from clear (and where no strategy for prevention can therefore be formulated), and which is of such importance to the planning and provision of services demands detailed investigation and careful monitoring. Mortality data are

Valgus fractures of the femoral neck during growth are a rarity. Four cases are reported, and, in addition, one patient from the literature. Three were treated by bed rest, two by primary screw fixation. Clinical results were good; there was no necrosis. In accordance with the experience with similar fractures in adults primary osteosynthesis is recommended in all cases to prevent secondary displacement. Decompression of the hip joint by aspiration should be done for diagnosis and for decompression of tension haemarthrosis.

In spite of the progress achieved in accident surgery, medial fractures of the neck of the femur still present a lot of problems. The rate of success achieved in most other cases of bone fracture is not obtained here. The necrosis of the head is the most frequent and most serious complication of the medial fracture of the neck of the femur. Its formation is influenced by different factors, such as fracture line, dislocation of the fragments, time and method of reposition, and method of osteosynthesis. A prognosis whether a necrosis of the head of the femur is to be expected or not can be made

A 36-year-old male farmer with known sickle cell disease presented four months after a road traffic accident with right hip pain and difficulty walking. He had initially received conservative treatment with traction but discontinued it due to financial constraints. Clinical examination revealed signs of hip instability, a 3 cm true limb shortening, and a Harris Hip Score of 38. Imaging showed a Sandhu Stage 3 non-union of the femoral neck with >50% neck resorption and Ficat-Arlet Grade 2a avascular necrosis (AVN). Given the relatively favorable prognostic indicators, including a Kerboul angle

PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to investigate the possible outcomes of intracapsular femoral neck fractures managed non-operatively or with a simple form of internal fixation.
METHODS: We reviewed 30 fractures and their post mortem reports from the Galler collection, a modern pathology reference series.
RESULTS: Our investigation revealed unusual appearances of the hip following femoral neck fractures that are not usually seen in modern orthopaedic practice, including previously undescribed acetabularisation of the femur and ankyloses of ununited femoral heads.
CONCLUSION: Appreciation o

Combined intracapsular and extracapsular fractures of the proximal femur-segmental fractures of neck of femur (SFNOF)-are rare and complex injuries. Literature regarding SFNOF is very limited; only one small retrospective study and 19 unique case reports have been described. We report the case of a 42-year-old man who suffered a compound subcapital femur fracture type Garden IV and an ipsilateral multifragmentary greater trochanter fracture from severe crush trauma. Neither the precise fracture constellation nor our management strategy, primary cemented total hip arthroplasty combined with ten

OBJECTIVE: To determine the association of body mass index (BMI) with 30 days and 1-year mortality outcomes of orthopedic elderly patients after hip fracture surgery.
METHODS: This is prospective study conducted at Department of Orthopaedics, at a tertiary care public sector hospital in Karachi between Jan-2016 to Jan-2018. In this short follow-up study, we included the data of 490 patients, who were operated for neck of femur fractures in a public sector tertiary care hospital between Jan-2016 to Jan-2018. Patients were divided into different categories on the basis of BMI; BMI <20 Kg.m-2 un

We reviewed 16 children with 16 displaced fractures of the femoral neck associated with complications. One was a transepiphyseal fracture, 12 were transcervical fractures, and three were basocervical fractures. The mean age at time of fracture was 11 years 7 months (range, 4 years 6 months to 16 years), and the mean length of follow-up after fracture was 6 years 11 months (range, 2-24 years). Complications in this series were avascular necrosis (AVN) (14 patients), nonunion (seven patients), premature physeal closure (15 patients), chondrolysis (seven patients), and coxa vara (two patients). The problems of the treatment of femoral neck fractures in young patients are discussed on 22 cases as well as the operative technique, post-operative treatment, late complications and their treatment. We feel that femoral neck fractures in children and young ones should be treated operatively. The three flanged nail should be used for internal fixation, giving a better fixation than K-wires. We have not seen any damage caused by the crossing of the epiphyseal plate with a nail or K-wires. Postoperatively the patient should walk non weight bearing on the fractured hip for 9 months, especially

End-result evaluations after an average follow-up of seventeen years are reported in sixty-one cases (sixty patients). There were five Type-1 (transepiphyseal), twenty-seven Type-II (transcervical), twenty-two Type-III (cervicotrochanteric), and seven Type-IV (intertrochanteric) femoral fractures. The majority of Type-I, Type-II, and displaced Type-III fractures were treated with closed or open reduction and Knowles-pin fixation. The majority of undisplaced Type-III and Type-IV fractures were treated with abduction plaster spica casts. Fifty-five per cent were found to have good resultswhile 2
