Prenatal exposure to alcohol has profound effects on many aspects of fetal development. Although alterations of somatic growth and specific minor malformations of facial structure are most characteristic, the effects of alcohol on brain development are most significant in that they lead to substantial problems with neurobehavioral development. Since the initial recognition of the fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), a number of important observations have been made from studies involving both humans and animals. Of particular importance, a number of maternal risk factors have been identified, which m

Fetal echocardiography has assumed an increasingly important role in the diagnosis of structural heart disease. Recently, the usefulness of this technique as a tool with which to observe the prenatal natural history of congenital heart disease has been appreciated. The application of spectral and color Doppler ultrasonographic interrogation has added to our ability to assess the integrity of the fetal and placental circuit. Only when we can consistently and accurately diagnose congenital heart disease in utero will we be able to successfully apply prenatal treatment for this condition.

A morphological study was carried out on 25 human embryos (3-60 mm CR) and 20 human fetuses (15-40 weeks). The anatomical analysis was completed by immunocytochemical studies of different markers of muscle differentiation (vimentin, desmin, titin and isoforms of the myosin heavy chains). A mesenchymal condensation forms around the urethra after the division of the cloaca (E.H. 12-15 mm CR). The m. pubo-rectalis appears in 20-30 mm CR embryos, following the opening of the anal membrane. Striated muscle fibers can be clearly differentiated at 15 weeks. At this time, the smooth muscle layer also

Although the outcome of pregnancy for women with diabetes mellitus has improved in recent years, the infant of the diabetic mother has an increased risk of major clinical problems, particularly in the early neonatal period. These include birth injury due to macrosomia, neonatal hypoglycemia, respiratory distress syndrome, and serious congenital anomalies. Because of the great difficulties encountered during attempts to investigate these problems in clinical research protocols, there is a continuing need to establish appropriate animal models of the diabetic pregnancy. Studies carried out over

The essentially of copper for normal fetal and neonatal development has been well documented, although copper metabolism during this period is poorly understood. The dietary requirement for copper is influenced by genetic background. The neurological phenotypic characteristics of the mutant gene quaking (qk) in mice resemble in part those of copper-deficient animals. Supplementation of the maternal diet with copper during pregnancy and lactation, or during lactation alone, greatly reduced the frequency of tremors characteristic of these mutants, and brought the otherwise low copper concentrati

With improvements in early diagnosis and management of genetic diseases, more women with genetic disorders are reaching reproductive age and becoming pregnant. While pregnancy can have a significant impact on a woman's health when there is an underlying genetic disorder, there can also be fetal effects, including embryopathy, fetal growth restriction, and brain injury. Some maternal genetic disorders are associated with adverse perinatal outcomes, including a high risk of perinatal loss and preterm birth. In this article, we review several maternal genetic disorders associated with fetal risk

OBJECTIVE: To determine the venous and arterial hemodynamics underlying macrosomic fetal growth.
METHODS: Fifty-eight healthy women who previously had given birth to a large neonate were included in a prospective longitudinal study. Of these, 29 gave birth to neonates with birth weight ≥ 90th percentile and were included in the statistical analysis. Umbilical vein blood flow and Doppler measurements of the ductus venosus, left portal vein and the hepatic, splenic, superior mesenteric, cerebral and umbilical arteries were repeated at 3-5 examinations during the second half of pregnancy and com

Maternal nutrition during pregnancy has a pivotal role in the regulation of placental-fetal development and thereby affects the lifelong health and productivity of offspring. Suboptimal maternal nutrition yields low birth weight, with substantial effect on the short-term morbidity of the newborn. The placenta is the organ through which gases, nutrients, and wastes are exchanged between the maternal-fetal circulations. The size, morphology, and nutrient transfer capacity of the placenta determine the prenatal growth trajectory of the fetus to influence birth weight. Transplacental exchange depe

Thyroid hormones are intricately involved in the developing fetal brain. The fetal central nervous system is sensitive to the maternal thyroid status. Critical amounts of maternal T3 and T4 must be transported across the placenta to the fetus to ensure the correct development of the brain throughout ontogeny. Severe mental retardation of the child can occur due to compromised iodine intake or thyroid disease. This has been reported in areas of the world with iodine insufficiency, New Guinea, and also in mother with thyroid complications such as hypothyroxinaemia and hyperthyroidism. The molecu

Fetal growth retardation due to maternal malnutrition is widespread especially in the Third World. Little is known about the mechanisms that regulate the growth of the fetus and placenta during protein malnutrition. It is known that the placental size and levels of circulating placental hormones such as human chorionic gonadotrophins (hCG), human placental lactogen (hPL), and estrogens are affected by the nutritional status of the mother. There is suggestive evidence that during malnutrition, hPL may increase lipolysis and exert a glucose sparing effect in the mother, thereby promoting glucose

Small doses of E. coli endotoxin given to pregnant mice on the 13th day of pregnancy caused only a mild maternal illness but induced resorption of approximately half the number of fetuses in each mouse. The remaining live fetuses developed normally and showed no evidence of retarded growth or malformations. The weights of their placentas and maternal spleens increased significantly. Endotoxin given on the 6th day of pregnancy caused a small reduction in fetal weights.

There seems to be no information on when and how the nasal capsule cartilage is divided into the lateral nasal cartilage (LNC) and greater alar cartilage (GAC). Likewise, there is no information of timing and sequence of development of the medial crus of GAC. We examined histological sections from 22 human fetuses with 45-350 mm of crown-rump length (approximately 9-40 weeks of gestational age). The LNC and GAC were separated from the antero-inferior marginal part of the nasal capsule cartilage at 10-12 weeks. The initial sesamoid was a wavy bar and it did not accompany a joint cavity. The LNC

Maturation of the fetal lung is accelerated by in utero treatment with corticosteroids and thyroid hormones. Other agents such as catecholamines, thyrotropin-releasing hormone, oestradiol, heroin and cyclic AMP also influence pulmonary phospholipid metabolism. Glucocorticoids cause precocious development of both lung morphology and the surfactant system in type II cells, resulting in more stable lungs with increased air space. The properties of glucocorticoid action are consistent with enzyme induction mediated by interaction of steroid with cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors. Receptors are

Insight into neuroembryology, developmental neuroanatomy and neurophysiology distinguish the diagnostic approaches of paediatric from adult neurologists and general paediatricians. These fundamental disciplines of basic neuroscience could be more effectively taught during paediatric neurology and most residency programmes, that will strengthen career-long learning. Interdisciplinary training of fetal-neonatal neurology within these programs requires working knowledge of neuroembryology applied to maternal reproductive health influencing the maternal-placental-fetal triad, neonate, and young ch

Mild isolated fetal ventriculomegaly (iFVM) is the most common abnormality of the fetal central nervous system. It is characterized by enlargement of one or both of the lateral ventricles (defined as ventricular width greater than 10 mm, but less than 12 mm). Despite its high prevalence, the pathophysiology of iFVM during fetal brain development and the neurobiological substrate beyond ventricular enlargement remain unexplored. In this work, we aimed to establish the relationships between the structural development of transient fetal brain zones/compartments and increased cerebrospinal fluid v

Fetal growth restriction (FGR) complicates 5-10% of pregnancies and is associated with increased risks of perinatal morbidity and mortality. The development of cerebellar neuropathology in utero, in response to chronic fetal hypoxia, and over the period of high risk for preterm birth, has not been previously studied. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the effects of FGR induced by placental insufficiency on cerebellar development at three timepoints in ovine fetal and neonatal development: (1) 115 days gestational age (d GA), (2) 124 d GA, and (3) 1-day-old postnatal age. Placental regulation of fetal growth involves the integration of multiple signaling pathways that modulate an array of placental functions, including nutrient transport. As a result, the flux of oxygen and nutrients to the fetus is altered, leading to changes in placental and fetal growth. Placental insulin/insulinlike growth factor-1 and mechanistic target of rapamycin signaling and amino acid transport capacity are inhibited in fetal growth restriction and activated in fetal overgrowth, implicating these placental functions in driving fetal growth. With novel approaches to specifically targe
