Filariae of animals, especially those of mammals, often infect humans and typically produce cryptic infections. These "zoonotic" infections have been reported from virtually all parts of the world including temperate zones. Infections may be symptomatic or not, and the parasites are found in surgical tissue biopsy specimens or, more rarely, are removed intact from superficial sites such as the orbit or conjuctivae. Typically, these worms tend to occupy tissue sites similar to those occupied in the natural animal host, with the exception of the eyes. Many kinds of filariae have been isolated fr

Filariasis is a global health problem and is a major social and economical burden in tropical countries in Asia, Africa and few of the South American countries [1,2]. In india, filariasis endemic in number of states including Bihar, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu is found chiefly along the banks of rivers and sea coastal areas. We present a case of 28 year female patient who presented with lump in her left breast for three months and was not associated with pain or discharge from nipple. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) showed live adult filarial worm along with var…

Filarial involvement of breast is a rare entity. Here is an unusual case of an old lady with right breast lump with axillary lymphadenopathy mimicking breast carcinoma, cytologically diagnosed as filarial mastitis. The patient subsequently received antihelmenthic therapy and showed marked clinical response within few weeks.

Human ocular infestation by a live filarial adult worm is a rare occurrence. We report a case of ocular infestation of a female adult Brugia malayi. A 35-year-old female presented with chief complaint of severe headache, blurring of vision, redness, and lacrimation since one year. On examination, there was conjunctival chemosis, congestion, and white-colored worm with wriggling movement in the anterior chamber of eye. The worm removed by paracentesis of anterior chamber. Identification basing on typical morphology showed to be adult female B. malayi, and was confirmed by immunochromatographic

UNLABELLED: 'River blindness' is the main problem of onchocerciasis. Despite a high prevalence of onchocerciasis in endemic countries, cases of imported cutaneous or ocular onchocerciasis in France are rare.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a chronic papular onchodermatitis with voluminous lymphadenopathy in a Cameroonian child, resolving with a treatment of ivermectin.
CONCLUSION: The main symptom of cutaneous onchocerciasis is pruritus, which symptom may alert physicians when dealing with patients who come from endemic countries for onchocerciasis. Cutaneous aspects may vary depending on

Among the causes of lymphoedema (LE), secondary LE due to filariasis is the most prevalent. It affects only a minority of the 120 million people infected with the causative organisms of lymphatic filariasis (LF), Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia malayi/timori, but is clustered in families, indicating a genetic basis for development of this pathology. The majority of infected individuals develop filarial-specific immunosuppression that starts even before birth in cases where mothers are infected and is characterized by regulatory T-cell responses and high levels of IgG4, thus tolerating high par…

Filariasis of the breast is usually seen in endemic areas. Involvement may, however, present years after leaving an endemic area and be associated with circulating microfilariae. We describe the findings in a woman who developed a breast mass three years after a visit to her native India.

Endemic filariasis in Thailand is restricted to the flat, low-lying, rural areas in the eastern coastal belt of peninsular Thailand. A large number of villages was surveyed, and 4,112 persons were examined, of whom 863 were found to be positive for microfilariae in the peripheral blood and 215 to have filarial disease. The chief manifestation was elephantiasis of the leg, which was sometimes associated with elephantiasis of the arm. The causative organism of endemic filariasis in Thailand is Wuchereria malayi.Nine species of mosquito (four of Mansonia and five of Anopheles) are vectors of W. m…

Bancroftian filariasis can be detected by using the ICT Filariasis test kit which is composed of specific polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies to Wuchereria bancrofti antigen. Chromatographic reaction with serum or plasma shows a result within 5 minutes. When compared with 454 thick blood films (standard smear method) within the same study, the ICT Filariasis test had sensitivity = 100%, specificity = 96.37%, efficiency = 96.70%, predictive value positive (PVP) = 70.70%, predictive value negative (PVN) = 100%. Compared with 454 membrane filtration technic (MFT), the MFT had sensitivity = 95.10…
