Histiocytic and Nonhistiocytic Glomerular Lesions: Foam Cells and Their Mimickers.

Numerous histiocytes are sometimes noted in glomeruli, giving rise to a foamy-appearing glomerulus. Foamy-appearing glomeruli may also be noted in conditions that do not contain numerous histiocytes. These disease entities are rare, have different underlying causes and pathophysiology, and can cause a diagnostic dilemma. We have observed this histiocytic/foamy glomerular change on the kidney biopsy specimen in 5 different disease entities: crystal-storing histiocytosis, histiocytic glomerulopathy associated with macrophage-activating syndrome, thrombotic microangiopathy, lecithin-cholesterol a

LDL and foam cell formation as the basis of atherogenesis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Lipoprotein-induced intracellular lipid accumulation (foam cell formation) is a trigger of atherogenesis at the subendothelial arterial cell level. The purpose of this review is to describe the recent data related to the possible mechanisms of LDL-induced formation of lipid-laden foam cells and their role in the onset and development of atherosclerotic lesion. RECENT FINDINGS: The most interesting current studies are related to the factors affecting foam cell formation. SUMMARY: The phenomenon of lipid accumulation in cultured cells became the basis for creating a cellular…

An experimental study on the origin of foam cells in glomerulonephritis.

Masugi nephritis induced in cholesterol-fed rabbits is characterized by accumulation of foam cells in glomeruli which vary in number almost in parallel with the natural course of the disease. From electron microscopic appearances these foam cells are apparently derived from migrant blood monocytes and mesangial cells, but not from endothelial cells. Location of monocytic foam cells is extremely variable, though most often observed in the subendothelial space. In addition, monocytes undergo transformation into multinucleated giant cells including Touton type's. Lipid deposits filling the cytopl…

Novel insights: Dynamic foam cells derived from the macrophage in atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerosis can be regarded as a chronic disease derived from the interaction between disordered lipoproteins and an unsuitable immune response. The evolution of foam cells is not only a significant pathological change in the early stage of atherosclerosis but also a key stage in the occurrence and development of atherosclerosis. The formation of foam cells is mainly caused by the imbalance among lipids uptake, lipids treatment, and reverse cholesterol transport. Although a large number of studies have summarized the source of foam cells and the mechanism of foam cells formation, we propos…

Splenic foam cells: a clinico-pathologic analysis of 92 splenectomized patients.

Spleens from 92 patients who underwent splenectomy for various indications were examined. These indications included hematologic disease in 38 patients and nonhematologic problems in 54. Of all the group foam cells were seen in hematoxylin and eosin (HE)-stained sections of spleens from 12 patients. This number increased to 21 (23%) when the diastase periodic acid-Schiff stain was used as a screening test. The cells in these 9 additional cases were too scanty to be observed on HE-stained sections alone. All the 21 spleens with positive foam cells were from patients with hematologic disease, sp…

Study on biomarkers of homocysteine-induced transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells into foam cells.

Homocysteine (Hcy) is an independent risk factor for atherosclerosis (AS). Hcy induces the transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) into foam cells, which play a crucial role in this process. However, the detailed mechanism is still unclear. To identify the key regulatory proteins during this process and clarify the possible mechanism of Hcy-induced foam cell formation in VSMCs, thereby providing theoretical support for the intervention of AS. VSMCs were allocated into two groups: a control cohort and a group exposed to Hcy to simulate an AS-like state. Quantitative proteomic pro…

Direct Scaffold-Coupled Electrical Stimulation of Chondrogenic Progenitor Cells through Graphene Foam Bioscaffolds to Control Mechanical Properties of Graphene Foam - Cell Composites.

Osteoarthritis, a major global cause of pain and disability, is driven by the irreversible degradation of hyaline cartilage in joints. Cartilage tissue engineering presents a promising therapeutic avenue, but success hinges on replicating the native physiological environment to guide cellular behavior and generate tissue constructs that mimic natural cartilage. Although electrical stimulation has been shown to enhance chondrogenesis and extracellular matrix production in 2D cultures, the mechanisms underlying these effects remain poorly understood, particularly in 3D models. Here, we report th

Supercritical Fluid Foaming of Self-Polarized β-PVDF Piezoelectric Foam with Tailored Cells for Advanced Energy Harvesting.

Porous poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) attracts considerable attention for mechanical energy harvesting and self-powered systems owing to its exceptional electromechanical coupling capabilities. Supercritical carbon dioxide foaming (SCF) that features solvent-free and green nature is one of the most preferable approaches to construct controllably porous polymers. Nonetheless, the electroactive β-phase of PVDF remains elusive during SCF due to its instability under an elevated temperature. Herein, we pioneer the use of ionic liquid (IL)-assisted SCF for the fabrication of self-polarized β-PVDF

High-expansion polypropylene foam prepared in non-crystalline state and oil adsorption performance of open-cell foam.

The preparation of high-expansion open-cell foam for oil spill clean-ups is important, but still challenging with linear isotactic polypropylene (PP). Therefore, a cooling batch foaming method was designed to fabricate the high-expansion PP foams using supercritical CO2 as a blowing agent. To investigate the relation between the crystallization and foaming of PP, an in-situ visualization system was employed. It is found that the CO2 dissolved in polymer melt depresses the crystallization temperature and nucleation of PP. When the foaming is triggered before the crystallization, high-expansion

Hydrogel foam dressings with angiogenic and immunomodulatory factors from mesenchymal stem cells.

Stem cell therapy and skin substitutes address the stalled healing of chronic wounds in order to promote wound closure; however, the high cost and regulatory hurdles of these treatments limit patient access. A low-cost method to induce bioactive healing has the potential to substantially improve patient care and prevent wound-induced limb loss. A previous study reported that bioactive factors derived from apoptotic-like mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) demonstrated anti-inflammatory and proangiogenic effects and improved ischemic muscle regeneration. In this work, these MSC-derived bioactive fact

Mitochondrial Omics in Macrophage Foam Cell Formation and Atherosclerosis.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is a leading cause of death worldwide, with atherosclerosis serving as the core pathological mechanism driving ischemic heart disease, ischemic stroke, and peripheral artery disease. Macrophages play a central role in atherosclerosis by internalizing modified lipids and transforming them into foam cells, thereby driving plaque formation and progression. Mitochondrial metabolism is critically involved in regulating macrophage function, and targeting mitochondrial dysfunction may provide strategies for limiting plaque inflammation and improving plaq…

Pica for foam rubber in patients with sickle cell disease.

We report three cases of pica for foam rubber among sickle cell disease patients. All three were African-American males, and at the times of initial presentation for the pica, two of them were 11 years of age and one was 15 years of age. In all cases, the pica reportedly had been occurring for at least several years. The foam rubber was most often obtained from furniture and mattresses, as well as from ironing-board pads, stereo speakers, and padded hair rollers. Reports from other researchers also suggest that this is not an uncommon type of pica. We discuss this problem from biologic, psycho

Pathways of smooth muscle foam cell formation in atherosclerosis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are the major cell type in human atherosclerosis-prone arteries and take up excess lipids, thereby contributing to luminal occlusion. Here we provide a focused review on pathways by which smooth muscle cells (SMCs) can become foam cells in atherosclerosis. RECENT FINDINGS: A synthesis of recent and older investigations provides key mechanistic insights into SMC foam cell formation. LDL and other apoB-containing lipoproteins are modified by a diverse array of oxidative, enzymatic, and nonenzymatic processes present in the arterial intima. These mod…
