Epileptogenic activity of folic acid after drug induces SLE (folic acid and epilepsy).

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of folic acid-containing multivitamin supplementation in epileptic women before and during pregnancy in order to determine the rate of structural birth defects and epilepsy-related side effects. STUDY DESIGN: First a randomised trial, later periconception care including in total 12225 females. RESULTS: Of 60 epileptic women with periconceptional folic acid (0.8 mg)-containing multivitamin supplementation, no one developed epilepsy-related side effects during the periconception period. One epileptic woman delivered a newborn with cleft lip and palate. Another pa…

The importance of folic acid.

Folic acid is necessary for cell development; for the metabolism of specific biochemical reactions in the body, such as the conversion of homocysteine to methionine; and for the metabolism of specific anticonvulsant drugs. Folic acid has an interrelationship with vitamin B12. A deficiency of folate increases the risk of NTDs, as well as contributing to hyperhomocystinemia, a condition associated with increased cardiovascular disease and NTDs. For the prevention of NTDs, it is recommended that a woman of childbearing age consume a daily folate intake of 400 micrograms; however, the average diet…

Folic acid intake and spina bifida in the era of dietary folic acid fortification.

BACKGROUND: The US Food and Drug Administration mandated that enriched grain products be fortified with folic acid by 1998. We evaluated whether intake of folic acid from supplements and diet was associated with a reduction in spina bifida in the setting of folic acid fortification. METHODS: Data were collected as part of the Slone Birth Defects Study from 1998 to 2008. Mothers of infants with and without birth defects were interviewed within 6 months of delivery about pregnancy exposures, including details of diet and vitamin intake. Dietary natural folate and synthetic folic acid from forti…

The plasma clearance of injected doses of folic acid as an index of folic acid deficiency.

The folic acid clearance test of Chanarin (1958) has been studied in normal white subjects, patients with megaloblastic anaemia, healthy Bantu males, Bantu females, hospital patients without anaemia, and in patients with scurvy. The test clearly distinguishes patients with megaloblastic anaemia, where clearance from the plasma of injected folic acid is abnormally rapid, from normal subjects. The rate of clearance of folic acid is abnormally rapid both in vitamin B(12) and in folic acid deficiency. Rapid clearance of injected folic acid in patients with primary B(12) deficiency may be the resul…

[Focus on folic acid benefits].

Folic acid, or vitamin B9, derives its name from the Latin word folium, which was used to indicate large-leafed plants rich in folic acid. Naturally occurring in spinach leaves, this complex acid was first synthesized in 1945. Since then, mounting scientific evidence has demonstrated its beneficial effects on the human body. An essential nutrient for well-being and health, folic acid intake during pregnancy is especially important for preventing neural tube defects. This focus highlights the importance of correct intake levels of folic acid, particularly in subjects at risk of vitamin B(9) def…

Cobalamin, folic acid, and homocysteine.

Cobalamin deficiency can lead to several adverse health consequences: folate trapping in the methylation cycle and subsequent impaired DNA biosynthesis; pernicious anemia hematologically, similar to that caused by folate deficiency; elevated blood homocysteine (tHcy) (risk factor for cardiovascular disease and adverse pregnancy outcomes); and neural tube defects (NTDs). Population-wide folate status is expected to improve where folic acid fortification policies for reducing NTD occurrence are established. However, there is concern that cobalamin deficiency and its characteristic neuropathy cou…

Folic acid metabolism and malaria.

Folate is essential for DNA synthesis and the survival and growth of the malaria parasite. Folate sufficiency may be associated with an increased risk of malaria. Antifolate antimalarial drugs are of major importance in the prophylaxis and treatment of malaria. Folic acid reverses the inhibition by antifolate drugs of plasmodial growth or survival in vitro, and folic acid supplements given to children with malaria may increase the failure rate of treatment with antimalarials. There is no convincing evidence of a significant prevalence of folate deficiency in children in malarious areas, nor of…
