Food insecurity in community-dwelling older Australians.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the extent of food insecurity (defined as running out of food in the last 12 months and being unable to afford to buy more) amongst older Australians, and the characteristics of those who experience this condition. DESIGN: Cross-sectional population survey. SETTING AND SUBJECTS: Respondents (n = 8,881) were community-dwelling older people (65 years and older) living independently in New South Wales, Australia, randomly sampled to participate in a computer-assisted telephone interview conducted during 1999-2000. The response rate was 71%. Responses to a food insecurity

Food insecurity in the development of metabolic diseases.

This Review discusses the current evidence on the relationship between food insecurity, obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and identifies potential interventions to mitigate the effect of food insecurity on these conditions. Studies in adults (mainly cross-sectional) have consistently found associations between food insecurity and several cardiometabolic diseases, including obesity (mainly among women), hyperlipidaemia, metabolic syndrome, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and T2DM. These associations represent plausible causal relationships given that food ins

Food insecurity and disability in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Households with a disabled adult are disproportionately food insecure, yet the mechanisms linking food insecurity to disability are under-specified. OBJECTIVE: To develop and empirically examine a model of the potential pathways connecting specific types of disability with food insecurity. METHODS: With pooled, repeated cross-sectional National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (1999-2014) including 38,354 participants, we ran probit models to estimate the probability of being food insecure as a function of different sets of disability measures and our control variable

Food Insecurity in Pregnancy, Receipt of Food Assistance, and Perinatal Complications.

IMPORTANCE: Food insecurity is a growing public health concern, but its association with perinatal complications remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether food insecurity in pregnancy was associated with the risk of perinatal complications and determine whether these potential associations differed by receipt of food assistance. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from a pregnancy survey conducted between June 22, 2020, and September 9, 2022, at Kaiser Permanente Northern California, an integrated health care system serving a diverse population of 4.6 million.

The impact of a school food aid program on household food insecurity.

BACKGROUND: We had a unique opportunity to establish the extent of food insecurity and the potential impact of a large-scale school-based nutritional program, in low-socioeconomic status districts of Greece, during the current economic crisis. METHODS: Around 162 schools with 25 349 students participated during the 2012-2013 school year. Each student received a daily healthy meal designed by nutrition specialists. Food insecurity levels, measured using the Food Security Survey Module were assessed at baseline and after a 1-8-month intervention period. Pre-post intervention responses were matc

Food Insecurity and Overall Survival in Locally Advanced Breast Cancer Patients Receiving Comprehensive Nodal Irradiation: The Food Insecurity-Obesity Paradox.

PURPOSE: Residents of food-insecure areas (FIAs) experience worse cancer outcomes, but underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Prior studies have not determined whether inequalities result from differences in cancer characteristics, treatment delivery, adherence, or food insecurity (FI) itself. We hypothesized that patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) residing in FIAs would demonstrate worse overall survival (OS) despite receiving similar cancer treatments with comparable treatment adherence. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This retrospective study analyzed 943 patients with LAB

Relationship between food insecurity and obesity-related comorbidities.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Food insecurity, which is inadequate access, availability and use of food, has been associated with obesity. This study investigated the relationship between food insecurity and obesity-related comorbidities. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analyzed 14713 adults aged ≥19 years in the 8th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2019-2021. Socioeconomic status, including household income, education, and occupation, lifestyle factors, including smoking status, physical activity, alcohol consumption, and body mass index (BMI), and obesity-related comorbidities including

Effects of maternal depression on family food insecurity.

We use data from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth Cohort to estimate the effects of maternal depression, a condition that is fairly common and can be severe, on food insecurity, a hardship that has increased substantially in the U.S. Using various model specifications, we find convincing evidence that severe maternal depression increases the likelihood that young children experience food insecurity by 23-79%, with estimates depending on model specification and measures of depression and food insecurity. For household food insecurity, the corresponding estimates are 11-69%. We also

Homeless "squeegee kids": food insecurity and daily survival.

Current knowledge about food insecurity in North America is largely based on research with low-income households. Much less is known about the food experiences of homeless people, a group who are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity. This study explored the food experiences of street youth, one of the fastest growing segments of the homeless population in Canada. To gain an in-depth understanding of food insecurity within the context of daily life, ethnographic research was undertaken with street youth at one inner-city drop-in centre in Toronto, Canada. Results of this study reveal that

Decoupling food insecurity from shocks: A global analysis of food system resilience.

Food systems worldwide are increasingly exposed to climate extremes, conflicts, pandemics, and economic shocks, raising concerns about their capacity to safeguard food security and nutrition. Although resilience is now central in global policy debates, empirical evidence on what enables national food systems to withstand shocks remains limited. Here, we analyze a unique multi-country dataset integrating measures of shock severity, governance, economic conditions, social capitals, and food-system characteristics. Using a causal resilience-as-capacity framework and a series of hybrid econometric

Exploring the relationship between food literacy and food insecurity: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Interest in food insecurity (FI) has intensified amid global efforts to address dietary and nutritional issues. Food literacy (FL) has emerged as a key competency for promoting healthy eating behaviors and potentially mitigating FI. This systematic review synthesized evidence on the relationship between FL and FI by summarizing their definitions and components, comparing measurement tools, and examining overall trends and characteristics of their association. MATERIALS/METHODS: This review followed Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses 2020

Household Food Insecurity and Parent-to-Child Aggression.

Nearly 13 million children in the United States live in households struggling with food insecurity. Although biosocial theories suggest a strong link between the lack of food and child maltreatment, and a handful of studies have established a correlation between nutritional deficits and family violence, it is unclear if household food insecurity itself is associated with physical and psychological child abuse apart from other issues related to poverty. The current study examines this possibility by analyzing data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study ( n = 2,330). Sixteen percent

Food Insecurity among Homeless Adults with Mental Illness.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of food insecurity and food insufficiency is high among homeless people. We investigated the prevalence and correlates of food insecurity among a cohort of homeless adults with mental illness in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. METHODS: Data collected from baseline questionnaires in the Vancouver At Home study were analysed to calculate the prevalence of food insecurity within the sample (n = 421). A modified version of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Adult Food Security Survey Module was used to ascertain food insecurity. Univariable and multivariable logi

State Minimum Wages and Food Insecurity Among Households Receiving Government Food Assistance.

BACKGROUND: While the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) aims to reduce food insecurity among low-income households, nearly half of recipients remain food insecure. Increasing state minimum wages could help improve food security, but because SNAP benefits are income-dependent, net effects are unclear. METHODS: Using the US Current Population Survey Food Security Supplement (2002-2019), we linked households interviewed in two consecutive Decembers to create a 2-year panel. The primary sample included SNAP recipient households with at least one adult working in year 1. The exposur

Anxiety moderates the association between severity of food insecurity and sleep duration among young adults in food-insecure households.

This study examined associations between food insecurity (FI) severity, anxiety symptoms, and sleep duration among young adults in food-insecure households. We hypothesized that more severe FI and higher anxiety would independently predict shorter sleep duration, and that anxiety would amplify the FI-sleep duration relationship. Analysis was conducted on a subsample (n = 96) of the EAT 2010-2018 young adult cohort. Participants completed the U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module, Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, and sleep assessment items. Linear regression models, controlling for demograp

Food Insecurity and Loneliness in the Former Soviet Countries.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between food insecurity (FI) and loneliness in countries of the former Soviet Union (FSU). METHODS: Data were analysed from 15,568 adults in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia, and Ukraine, collected in the Health in Times of Transition (HITT) survey in 2010-2011. Information was obtained on both FI and loneliness with single-item measures. Logistic regression was used to examine associations. RESULTS: In a fully adjusted analysis, moderate (OR: 1.35, 95% CI: 1.16-1.57) and severe FI (OR: 1.94, 95% CI: 1.58-2.

Food insecurity and bulimia nervosa in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity occurs when access to food is limited by financial hardship. Yet, paradoxically, food insecurity is associated with overeating, with emerging evidence that it may be related to disordered eating. A recent report found that food insecurity was associated with binge-eating disorder (BED), but it is not yet known whether food insecurity is also associated with bulimia nervosa (BN). METHODS: Participants were 873 respondents recruited online who completed a battery of established measures and were categorized into three study groups: healthy-weight (HW), BED, and BN. H

Food insecurity and levels of marginalization: food accessibility, consumption and concern in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity continues to be a problem throughout the world. When estimating food insecurity, few studies analyze the contexts where the phenomenon takes place. By bearing in mind levels of marginalization in four states of Mexico, this paper answers two questions: (I) What problems are experienced with access to food, and how these difficulties affect the amount of food consumed in households? and (II) How do households experience the concern of running out of food? METHODS: Our qualitative study draws data from urban and semi-urban areas of four Mexican states: Mexico City, T

Food Insecurity Is Common in the Orthopaedic Trauma Population.

INTRODUCTION: Food insecurity is the condition of limited access to healthy and safe food. Malnutrition resulting from food insecurity is a concern particularly in the surgical population due to the association with impaired healing. This aim of this study was to report the incidence and risk factors for food insecurity in the orthopaedic trauma population. METHODS: Orthopaedic trauma centers at three distinct regions of the United States enrolled patients who had undergone extremity or pelvis fracture fixation within the previous 6 months. Participants completed the United States Department
