Problems encountered regarding the examination in forensic pathology are variable, even if the field of interest in limited to trauma alone. The most important problem appears to be the establishment of a causal relationship between the trauma and the death of the victim. From the materials I have contributed concerning examinations in forensic medicine, the problems inherent in the examination of the victim of traumatic shock may be introduced. The results from animal studies, which have been attempted to provide an experimental background to support the observations, are also discussed. My p…

Background: Forensic medicine finds more and more resonance due to requests and queries from clinicians and acts as a mediator between the individual medical disciplines, in particular with regard to legal issues, and as an interface between the fields of medicine, police and judiciary. The aim of this short narrative overview is to make surgeons aware of the forensic aspects of their work, which is usually focused on clinical and curative aspects. Crucial points: Traditionally, the basic work in forensic medicine comprises sudden and unexpected deaths, for which it is important to definitely …

AIM: The aim of this study is to evaluate the role of functional imaging for forensic purposes.
METHODS: We reviewed a few outpatient cases that were sent to our department for examination after traumatic events and one case with neuropsychic disturbances.
RESULTS: Functional imaging showed signs of traumatic lesions in the skeletal system, of brain metabolism and of renal failure.
CONCLUSION: Functional disturbances following traumatic events are in some cases more important than morphological abnormalities. Targeted scintigraphic examinations could be applied for visualisation of traumati

Purpose:The COVID-19 pandemic prompted significant challenges in clinical forensic medicine and forensic psychiatry and emphasised the need for sustainable service delivery. Both fields faced difficulties in maintaining services due to COVID-19 precautions and limited referrals. This review examined the changes in forensic practices, aiming to understand their impact and learn from them to inform future strategies. Methods: A search was conducted across Ovid Medline, Ovid Embase, Ovid Emcare and PubMed, and webpages of governments and other organisations. Studies were included if they assessed…

A 19-year-old school boy suffered from fluctuating uncharacteristic chest pain in the last 20 h before his death. He died unexpectedly within a few minutes of a hemopericardium, which resulted from an aneurysmal rupture of the ascending aorta. The patient's past history as well as the autopsy and ultrastructural findings led to the diagnosis of Marfan's syndrome with alterations of the cardiovascular skeletal system but no ophthalmological involvement ("oligosymptomatic" form of Marfan's syndrome). Appraisal of the cause of death is made more difficult by the fact that medical treatment was un

X-ray is the most common, basic and essential imaging method used in forensic medicine. It serves to display and localize the foreign objects in the body and helps to detect various traumatic and pathological changes. X-ray imaging is valuable in anthropological assessment of an individual. X-ray allows non-invasive evaluation of important findings before the autopsy and thus selection of the optimal strategy for dissection. Basic indications for postmortem X-ray imaging in forensic medicine include gunshot and explosive fatalities (identification and localization of projectiles or other compo…

Younger children in particular are at risk of becoming victims of dog attacks due to their small size. Such a biting incident can fulfil various criminal offences. In order to be able to satisfy possible legal claims, the injuries should be documented by forensic medicine and thus be legally binding. Therefore, close cooperation between the treating surgeons and forensic experts is recommended. A retrospective analysis of the cases of dog bite injuries in children and adults treated by clinical forensic medicine at the University Medical Center Rostock was carried out under various aspects. Literature about the medicolegal implications of MH incidents has been examined. The authors themselves have observed 11 typical cases of malignant hyperthermia, 4 of which were investigated by the public prosecutor. From the point of view "ex ante" it should be expected that anaesthetists known about the diagnosis, therapy, and preanaesthetic procedures concerning MH.

OBJECTIVES: Currently little research exists examining self-mutilation (SM) in samples of forensic referrals. The present study provides a comprehensive review on the frequency, etiology, and morphologic characteristics of self-inflicted injuries in a sample of outpatients' forensic referrals.
METHODS: In a prospective cross-sectional study, during 3 years, we examined 9874 outpatients' forensic referrals and found 1248 SM cases in Ghouchan (an urban and suburban area of Iran).
RESULTS: Based on forensic medical examinations, it was found that 12.6% of all outpatients' forensic referrals had

There are only scant literature data on reasons and circumstances of medico-legal second autopsies. The present study includes 12 second autopsies from the period 1992-1997; the first post-mortem examination took place either in the home country (institutes of pathology) or abroad. 7 of the 12 cases of death investigated happened in Germany (exclusively in hospitals) and 5 of them abroad (Netherlands, Romania, Portugal, Libya). Repeat autopsies were ordered by criminal courts (n = 9), private persons (n = 2) and social insurances (n = 1). The main indication was possible medical malpractice (n

Two cases of poisoning with 2-propanol (isopropylalcohol) are reported. In one case, nail polish remover was drunk by a 2-year-old child. The concentration of 2-propanol and its metabolite acetone in the blood could be observed over a period of approximately 50 h. The highest concentration of 2-propanol determined was 4.22 g/l. Acetone reached a maximum value of 2.27 g/l 12 h after ingestion. The child survived without any observable after-effects. In the second case, a 35-year-old man drank ethanol in addition to 2-propanol. The poisoning was lethal. The possible time of intake before death i

Most victims of physical violence sooner or later will access a hospital or medical cabinet because of that violence, and in particular emergency departments (EDs). This paper aims to analyze the performance of emergency ward clinicians in the forensic management of such victims by examining the activities carried out and the data reported. A total of 991 medical records were extrapolated from the database of the ED of the Policlinico of Milan in an average pre-pandemic 1-year activity. For each medical record, 16 parameters were analyzed in-depth including epidemiological data, information on
