Forensic science aspects of fatal sexual assaults on women.

The case files of 41 female victims of proven fatal sexual assault were reviewed. They averaged 42 years of age, but a bimodal age distribution was evident. Younger victims (averaging 31 years of age) were most often found in canals, fields, or vacant lots, whereas older women (averaging 51 years of age) were found most often in their residences. Death usually resulted from mechanical asphyxiation, and the use of firearms was infrequent. Various instruments used to harm, restrain, or kill the victim were most often obtained at the scene of death and reflected the emotionality and impulsivity o

Lighting up forensic science by aggregation-induced emission: A review.

Forensic science requires a fast, sensitive, and anti-interfering imaging tool for on-site investigation and bio-analysis. The aggregation-induced emission (AIE) phenomenon exhibits remarkable luminescence properties (large Stokes shift, diverse molecular structures, and high photo-stability), which can provide a viable solution for on-site analysis, while at the same time overcoming the problem of aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ). Based on the outstanding performance in chemical analysis and bio-sensing, AIE materials have great prospects in the field of forensic science. Therefore, the app

Exploratory research: Is forensic science a cause of miscarriage of justice in Canada?

This exploratory research examines the implication of science in 92 Canadian wrongful convictions officially recognized by the state. The analysis revealed that science played a role in 30 cases, but 97% of those errors stemmed from the misinterpretation or overstatement of reliable scientific results, predominantly in legal medicine, and not from analytical errors. These errors often involved exceeding the probative value of evidence or a confusion between levels of interpretation. In addition, a collaboration with AVANE (Aide aux Victimes des Affaires Non-Élucidés) a French organization prov

Loss of Chromosome Y and Its Potential Applications as Biomarker in Health and Forensic Sciences.

Loss of chromosome Y (LOY) is a mosaic aneuploidy that can be detected mainly in blood samples of male individuals. Usually, LOY occurrence increases with chronological age in healthy men. Moreover, recently LOY has been reported in association with several diseases, such as cancer, where its frequency is even higher. The Y chromosome is one of the shortest chromosomes of the human karyotype, and it is crucial for correct male development. This chromosome has functions beyond the male reproductive system, and loss of its genes or even LOY can have consequences for the male body that are yet to

Authentic assessment in forensic science programmes: A UK-based survey of practitioners.

Authentic assessment is becoming increasingly common in higher education, and it can be achieved in forensic science programmes by asking students to complete realistic workplace tasks. We argue that preparing students for the forensic science workplace also means preparing them for the ongoing training and assessment they will experience. Using an online questionnaire of 60 practitioners, we surveyed the assessment methods that are used in forensic science workplaces to assess theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Just over half of the participants (52 %) were from the UK. The most comm

Trauma and coping mechanisms exhibited by forensic science practitioners: A literature review.

Vicarious trauma (VT) has been studied in mental health experts for over 30 years due to their engagement with victims of trauma and exposure to details of events, crimes, and tragedies experienced by their patients. Recently, VT studies have been extended to first responders as they also engage with victims on a level which may affect their own wellbeing. First responders involved in the criminal justice system, such as law enforcement personnel, have benefited from these studies as the results have helped drive organizational change. However, other professionals throughout the criminal justi

Detection of exogenous substances in latent fingermarks by silver-assisted LDI imaging MS: perspectives in forensic sciences.

For over one hundred years, the fingerprint has reigned as one of the most trusted pieces of forensic evidence for suspect identification. In the last few decades, the modernization of chemical analysis technologies led scientists to explore new possibilities to further analyse fingermarks sampled from a crime scene. Indeed, the detection of chemicals a suspect has been in contact with before or during the crime can provide valuable insights into criminal investigations. In this regard, imaging mass spectrometry (IMS) has shown to be a powerful tool for the analysis of fingermarks by combining

Does the quality of dental images depend on patient's age and sex ?- Explanations from the forensic sciences.

The objective of this analysis was to investigate the dependency of image quality of dental panoramic radiographs on patient's age and sex, and to demonstrate that forensic science can explain these relationships. The image qualities of 100 dental panoramic radiographs obtained from 50 patients with two devices were assessed by ten independent observers of different specialisations. Image quality decreased with increasing age of the patients (P=0.003). One of the devices turned out to be superior to the other; however, this difference between the devices was present only in older patients but

Morphological sciences in a forensic context: The importance of recognizing osteoblastic lesions found in an osteological collection.

Certain bone lesions originate from metastases caused by specific types of cancer. Prostate cancer is a malignant neoplasm whose metastases are typically osteoblastic lesions, often resembling a "sunburst" pattern. The study of human skeletal remains, particularly in forensic contexts, can reveal fundamental aspects, such as the probable cause of death. The objective of this study was to analyze and identify individualizing characteristics, specifically osteoblastic lesions, in skeletons from the osteological collection of the Forensic Anthropology and Osteology Laboratory (LAOF) at the Federa

[Applications of functional materials-based solid phase microextraction technique in forensic science].

Sample extraction is a crucial step in forensic analysis, especially when dealing with trace and ultra-trace levels of target analytes present in various complex matrices (e. g., soil, biological samples, and fire debris). Conventional sample preparation techniques include Soxhlet extraction and liquid-liquid extraction. However, these techniques are tedious, time-consuming, labor-intensive and require large amounts of solvents, which poses a threat to the environment and health of researchers. Moreover, sample loss and secondary pollution can easily occur during the preparation procedure. Con

An assessment of DNA extraction methods from blood-stained soil in forensic science.

In forensic crime scene investigations, biological fluids such as blood are commonly found in soil. However, the analysis of blood-stained soil can be challenging due to the presence of inhibitors which limit the effective extraction and amplification of the deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) required to produce a reportable DNA profile. There are some extraction methods that have been applied to blood-stained soil in forensic science, but these have produced sporadic results. This research has taken a number of different extraction methods from the fields of ancient DNA and environmental DNA and bro

Applying the principles of isotope analysis in plant and animal ecology to forensic science in the Americas.

The heart of forensic science is application of the scientific method and analytical approaches to answer questions central to solving a crime: Who, What, When, Where, and How. Forensic practitioners use fundamentals of chemistry and physics to examine evidence and infer its origin. In this regard, ecological researchers have had a significant impact on forensic science through the development and application of a specialized measurement technique-isotope analysis-for examining evidence. Here, we review the utility of isotope analysis in forensic settings from an ecological perspective, concen
