Bilateral spontaneous inter-trochanteric fractures of proximal femurs.

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral spontaneous inter-trochanteric fractures of the proximal femur are rare. We report an unusual case of bilateral intertrochanteric fractures of the proximal femur in a 92 year old lady. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 92 year old lady presented to us with one week history of pain in both hips and poor mobilisation. There was no history of mechanical fall. The initial plain films of the hips did not show any fractures and the diagnosis was made by MRI scans. She underwent bilateral fixation of the fractures with dynamic hip screws. After a period of rehabilitation she returned t

Spontaneous bilateral olecranon fractures in a rheumatoid patient.

A case is described of a patient sustaining bilateral spontaneous olecranon fractures while undergoing rehabilitation following surgery for a hip fracture. The patient's underlying rheumatoid arthritis disease process most likely caused erosions and subchondral cysts formation in the mid-trochlear notch region. This area, in turn, acts as a pivot point in elbow extension/flexion movements. During rehabilitation, the patient became dependent on her upper limbs for mobilisation. This led to significant forces being put through this already weakened region, causing spontaneous bilateral olecranon

Battered granny or spontaneous fractures? A legal dilemma.

A 70-year-old woman was admitted from a local nursing home with extensive bruising and bilateral hip discomfort. The referring doctor had reported the possibility of elder abuse to the police. Full examination showed that osteomalacia, precipitated by a poor diet and lack of exposure to sunlight, was sufficient to explain the patient's condition. Caution is recommended in diagnosing elder abuse until other possibilities have been excluded.

Conservatively Treated Orbital Blowout Fractures: Spontaneous Radiologic Improvement.

PURPOSE: To determine if conservatively treated blowout fractures of the orbit undergo spontaneous improvement based on radiologic findings. DESIGN: Prospective, noncomparative series. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with conservatively treated orbital blowout fractures in a single tertiary institution from 2012 through 2016 with initial and follow-up computed tomography (CT) scans. METHODS: Comparison of initial and follow-up CT to assess for smoothening of bony contour, joining of bony edges, reduction in herniation of orbital contents, and new bone formation. Orbital and fracture volumes were cal

Spontaneous fracture of hypertrophied genial tubercles.

A case of spontaneous fracture of hypertrophied genial tubercles is reported. This is an uncommon event with only six previously reported cases. This entity is usually associated with severe edentulous bone resorption, a condition related to the pathogenesis of this fracture. Clinical complaints include painful swelling of the floor of the mouth and impaired tongue function. If left untreated, mucosal inflammatory changes may appear and a biopsy should be performed. Total recovery is obtained after removal of the fractured fragments.

[Spontaneous fracture: a potential clinical concern].

Spontaneous fracture is an issue of increasing concern in clinical care. However, this topic has received only limited attention in nursing research. Gaps in understanding related to spontaneous fractures may increase medical-legal risks faced by frontline care nurses, exacerbate nursing pressures, and serve as a disincentive to remain in the already understaffed nursing profession. This article reviews previous research on spontaneous fractures to determine the epidemiological causes of clinical spontaneous fracture and identify effective prevention strategies. We hope this paper may increase
