Canine babesiosis has a high prevalence in France and continues to constitute a diagnostic challenge. This paper presents essential data derived from epidemiological surveys in order to define the main features of this disease. Atypical forms are frequent, the diagnosis must be confirmed by blood smears and treatment is based on the use of imidocarb. Prophylaxis currently remains insufficient.

We report an autochthonous human case of tickborne encephalitis (TBE) in the Bordeaux area, southwestern France. The patient was a farmer who had severe encephalomyelitis. ELISA and neutralization assay of serum and cerebrospinal fluid established the diagnosis. This potential new endemic focus for TBE virus should be further investigated.

The human coronavirus NL63 (HCoV-NL63) was first identified in The Netherlands, and its circulation in France has not been investigated. We studied HCoV-NL63 infection in hospitalized children diagnosed with respiratory tract infections. From November 2002 to April 2003, we evaluated 300 respiratory specimens for HCoV-NL63. Of the 300 samples, 28 (9.3%) were positive for HCoV-NL63. The highest prevalence was found in February (18%). Until recently, thoracic surgery in France was associated with vascular or cardiac surgery. It is now increasingly performed as a specific activity. Training of a thoracic surgeon has a common part with cardiovascular surgery during a 6-year curriculum including theory and practical practice acquired both by simulation and clinical fellowship. This is a case report about a 54-year-old man with hypovolemic shock, due to diarrhea and major vomiting after his return from India. The isolation of Vibrio cholerae serogroup O1 (Ogawa serotype) explains this typical clinical presentation of cholera, seen in 10% of cholera cases only. The patient had co-infection with Vibrio cholerae and Campylobacter coli. Co-infections appear to be frequent in endemic areas. The purpose of this case report is to recall the relevance of Vibrio isolation when the clinical context is evocative (diarrhea on travel return, raw sea food consumption).
