BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastomas are benign vascular neoplasms that may be associated with von Hippel-Lindau disease. They are more common in m … edema, contrast enhancement pattern, and extra-axial location in the supratentorial region, in the frontal lobe, which is uncommon for a hemangioblastoma. The patient underwent microneurosurgery for tumor resection, and the excised tissue was submitted for anatomopathologic evaluation. This study clarified the diagnosis as hemangioblastoma. We followed up the …

Frontal lobe syndromes with personality change are well known for about 150 years but mysteries of their underlying anatomophysiological mechanisms have started to unfold in recent years. The frontal lobe accommodates an extension of the primary motor (precentral) cortex, the premotor region and the interhemispherically located supplementary motor region, both of them forming area 6 and its subdivisions. The anterior and inferior frontal structures (and also the eye field, area 8) belong to the prefrontal region. The prefrontal cortex is also involved in motor action: in its initiation, planni…

We present the facts on kind and frequency of disorder of high cortical functions in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. It was considered for a long time that this disease affects selectively motor neurons. The signs of degeneration found in other structures and associated signs of other neurological disorders brought the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis under suspicion. However, the specific type of degenerative dementia is nowadays more frequently discovered in patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The nosological status of motor neuron disease with dementia is still controversi

To define further the electroclinical manifestations of frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), we studied 150 seizures manifested by 24 patients; 18 patients had subdural electrode arrays (SEA). The findings in these patients clearly overlapped presumably reflecting the interconnections between functionally related frontal zones; yet the manner in which the symptoms clustered and the sequence in which they occurred generally indicated the anatomic site of the epileptogenic zone. We divided the patients into three major groups: (a) those with supplementary motor seizures, (b) those with focal motor seizu…

PURPOSE: Mucoceles are mucus-containing cysts that form in paranasal sinuses; although mucoceles themselves are benign, this case report highlights the extensive damage they can cause as their expansion may lead to bony erosion and extension of the mucocele into the orbit and cranium; it also presents a rarely reported instance of frontal sinus mucocele leading to frontal lobe syndrome. A thorough discussion and review of mucoceles is included.
CASE REPORT: A 68-year-old white man presented with intermittent diplopia and a pressure sensation in the right eye. He had a history of chronic sinus…

Throughout evolution the frontal lobes have progressively acquired a central role in most aspects of cognition and behavior. In humans, frontal lobe functions are conditional on the development of an intricate set of short- and long-range connections that guarantee direct access to sensory information and control over regions dedicated to planning and motor execution. Here the frontal cortical anatomy and the major connections that constitute the local and extended frontal connectivity are reviewed in the context of diffusion tractography studies, contemporary models of frontal lobe functions,…

There is no doubt that the frontal lobe plays a major role in the 3/sec spike-wave absence seizure. It is pointed out initially that the controversies of cortical vs. thalamic origin of the spike-waves and the associated absence can be laid at rest as far as human absence seizures and human primary generalized epilepsy (PGE) are concerned: their origin is cortical with maximal frontal lobe involvement. Experimentally-induced spike-wave bursts or spontaneous spike-waves in animals pertain to other forms of epileptic seizure disorder. The frontal maximum of the 3/sec spike-wave pattern indeed in…

The frontal lobe is crucial and contributes to controlling truncal motion, postural responses, and maintaining equilibrium and locomotion. The rich repertoire of frontal gait disorders gives some indication of this complexity. For human walking, it is necessary to simultaneously achieve at least two tasks, such as maintaining a bipedal upright posture and locomotion. Particularly, postural control plays an extremely significant role in enabling the subject to maintain stable gait behaviors to adapt to the environment. To achieve these requirements, the frontal cortex (1) uses cognitive informa…

The human brain is organized into specialized functional brain networks. Some networks are dedicated to early sensory processing, and others to generating motor outputs. Yet, the bulk of the human brain's functional networks is actually dedicated to control processes. The two control networks most important for the impressive repertoire of control-related behaviors that humans are able to instantiate and maintain are the frontoparietal and cinguloopercular networks. We provide evidence that these two control networks largely contribute to nonoverlapping domains of control. These networks large

In this case report a 77-year-old male tumbled in his lavatory and hit his head against a toilet roll holder. The holder penetrated his eye and orbita and left a 0.5 × 1 cm cylindrical piece of plastic inside his frontal lobe. He was admitted at a neurosurgical department, where the foreign object was removed. In this report, we summarise some of the basic principles of handling patients with a penetrating brain trauma, including risk of infection, control of bleeding and technical considerations before surgically removing a foreign object.

We report a case of a 7-year-old right-handed girl with neurocytoma in the left frontal lobe. She developed convulsive seizures on the right side of her face at the age of 1 year and 8 months, and CT scan revealed a low density lesion in the left frontal lobe near the Sylvian fissure. CT scan at the age of 7 years showed slight enlargement of the lesion in size, and linear calcification in the mass. MRI imaging revealed the lesion to be a solid mass involving the area of Brodmann 44 of the left cerebral hemisphere. However, amytal test disclosed that her speech center was not situated in the l…

A frontal brain abscess was caused by an osteoma of the frontal sinus. This osteoma had destroyed the posterior wall and was blocking the infundibulum. Under these preconditions a sinusitis frontalis was followed by an intracranial infection and a brain abscess.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological profiles are heterogeneous both across and within epilepsy syndromes, but especially in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), which has complex semiology and epileptogenicity. This study aimed to characterize the cognitive heterogeneity within FLE by identifying cognitive phenotypes and determining their demographic and clinical characteristics.
METHOD: One hundred and six patients (age 16-66; 44% female) with FLE completed comprehensive neuropsychological testing, including measures within five cognitive domains: language, attention, executive function, processing speed,…
