[Intraoperative frozen sections in diseases of the female genital tract].

Intraoperative frozen sections are particularly important for ovarian tumors because definitive preoperative histology is not possible. The diagnostic accuracy of frozen sections is highest for primary invasive ovarian carcinomas and benign ovarian lesions, followed by borderline tumors and poorest for ovarian metastases and rare neoplasms, such as germ cell tumors. Endometrial carcinoma should be diagnosed preoperatively by curettage or biopsy. For endometrioid endometrial carcinomas the indications for lymphadenectomy are often based on intraoperative assessment of the uterus. The differenti

[Use of frozen sections to assess surgical margins during radical prostatectomy].

INTRODUCTION: At present there is no consensus on the use of frozen sections (FS) during radical prostatectomy. Several groups have proposed the benefit of FS although the studies differ widely in sampling methods and sites where FS were taken. This study aims to evaluate the usefulness and reliability of standard assessment of FS in multiple sites during radical prostatectomy. METHODS: During open radical prostatectomy in all patients we sampled tissue from the urethral stump, the neurovascular bundles, the Denonvillier fascia and the bladder neck after removing the prostate. Where FS showed

Magnetic resonance imaging and intraoperative frozen sections in intratemporal facial schwannomas.

Seven cases of intratemporal facial schwannoma were assessed by preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and intraoperative frozen sections to determine tumor boundaries. These results were then analyzed with respect to gross tumor appearance, under the operating microscope, and final histopathologic diagnosis, with immunostains. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI was helpful in planning the surgical and approach and in defining the extent of tumor involvement relative to the facial nerve. Frozen sections on the other hand were often unreliable in confirming the completeness of resection, frequently

Intraoperative Bone Marrow Frozen Sections Reduce Positive Final Margins in Mandibulectomy.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of intraoperative bone marrow frozen section (IBMFS) use on final margin status and survival outcomes in patients undergoing mandibulectomy for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and non-SCC neoplasms. METHODS: A single-center retrospective cohort study was performed of patients undergoing segmental or marginal mandibulectomy for benign or malignant neoplasms between 2009 and 2025. The medical record was reviewed for demographic data, histopathologic disease features, treatment, and outcomes. Univariable and multivariable Cox regression analyses were used to evalua

Reliability of intraoperative frozen sections in the management of Hirschsprung's disease.

BACKGROUND: The use of a 1-stage pull-through for Hirschsprung's disease (HD) is dependent on accurate identification of the normally innervated bowel on intraoperative frozen sections (IOFS). The authors wished to determine the incidence and sources of error during this process. METHODS: All HD patients undergoing IOFS over a 15-year period were reviewed. RESULTS: Three hundred four patients underwent a total of 700 IOFS. In 9 cases (3%), there was discrepancy between IOFS and permanent sections. Two of these were false-positive (ganglion cells incorrectly believed to be present at IOFS); b

An assessment of the value of frozen sections in gynecological surgery.

In 203 consecutive gynecological operations where frozen sections were performed, 35.6% were from conditions of the ovary, 22.7% from the cervix, 18.2% from the endometrium, and 11.4% from the vulva. There were 0.5% false-positive, 1.0% false-negative and 2.0% deferred diagnosis. Incorrect interpretation was the cause of the single false-positive diagnosis, while the false-negative diagnoses were due to errors in block selection. The deferred diagnoses mainly occurred in gynecological conditions where diagnosis was difficult, required extensive sampling or a formal mitotic count. As in other s

Frozen sections of bone biopsies in metabolic and other bone diseases.

Frozen sections of bone trephine and needle biopsies can be satisfactorily cut in a standard cryostat and, when stained with haematoxylin and eosin, they enable a rapid diagnosis to be made in a wide range of metabolic bone disorders including Paget's disease, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hyperparathyroidism and renal osteodystrophy. Neoplastic disease of bone may also be diagnosed using the same technique. A tissue diagnosis can be established within an hour of the biopsy being taken, instead of the 1-3 weeks required for resin section diagnosis, with a consequent potential saving in further c

Estimation of the optimal thickness of sections for adipose tissue, salivary glands and skeletal muscle during intraoperative frozen sections.

AIM: To estimate and evaluate the optimal thickness section tissue for adipose tissue, salivary glands and skeletal muscle during intraoperative frozen sectioning. METHODOLOGY: This prospective study was conducted in our oral oncology department after obtaining approval from the institutional ethics committee. For each tissue type, 143 sections were analysed at each of three thicknesses (5, 7, and 11 µm) using a two-step embedding technique, resulting in a total of 1287 sections. The sections were semi-qualitatively scored as acceptable or unacceptable based on the presence of artefacts, stai

Comparative Study of Frozen and Paraffin-Embedded Sections: Evaluation of Inflammatory Dermatoses.

BACKGROUND: Frozen section (FS) is often performed when histopathological evaluations are urgently required for implementation of therapeutic measures. In dermatology, this method is most commonly used to evaluate excision margins of tumors. FS are also routinely employed to differentiate toxic epidermal necrolysis from staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome. However, little is currently known about the performance of FS in the diagnosis of inflammatory dermatoses. OBJECTIVES: To compare histopathological diagnoses in a series of patients with a clinical diagnosis of an inflammatory dermatosis

Lessons Learned from Routine Intraoperative Ureteral Margin Frozen Sections during Radical Cystectomy.

INTRODUCTION: We examined the practice patterns of intraoperative ureteral frozen section during radical cystectomy and the impact of ureteral margin positivity on operative characteristics and oncologic outcomes. METHODS: The records of patients who underwent radical cystectomy at our institution from 2004 to 2011 were identified. Intraoperative ureteral frozen section characteristics were examined, including number, laterality, positivity, conversion to negative and final permanent section status. Logistic regression analysis was performed for predictors of operative time, change in urinary

Accuracy of frozen sections for intraoperative diagnosis of complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to correlate the histological diagnosis made during intraoperative frozen section (FS) examination of hysterectomy samples with complex atypical endometrial hyperplasia (CAEH) diagnosed with definitive paraffin block histology. METHODS: FS pathology results of 125 patients with a pre- operative biopsy showing CAEH were compared retrospectively with paraffin block pathology findings. RESULTS: Paraffin block results were consistent with FS in 78 of 125 patients (62.4%). The FS sensitivity and specificity of detecting cancer were 81.1% and 97.9%, with ne

Seven-colour multiplex immunochemistry/immunofluorescence and whole slide imaging of frozen sections.

Multiplex Immunochemistry/Immunofluorescence (mIHC/IF) aims to visualise multiple biomarkers in a single tissue section and is especially powerful when used on slide scanners coupled with digital analysis tools. mIHC/IF is commonly employed in immuno-oncology to characterise features of the tumour microenvironment (TME) and correlate them with clinical parameters to guide prognostication and therapy. However, mIHC/IF can be applied to a wide range of organisms in any physiological or disease context. Recent innovation has extended the number of markers that can be detected using slide scanners

Clear-Cell Mesothelioma of Uterine Corpus: Diagnostic Challenges in Intraoperative Frozen Sections.

The clear-cell variant of epithelioid mesothelioma is an extremely rare neoplasm of the peritoneum. It shares histomorphologic features overlapping with a wide variety of tumors including carcinomas and other non-epithelial neoplasms. The diagnosis of peritoneal clear-cell mesothelioma is not always straightforward, despite known immunohistochemistry (IHC) markers. Due to its rarity, this entity may be diagnostically confused with other clear-cell neoplasms, particularly in intraoperative frozen sections. Here, we present a case of clear-cell mesothelioma originating in the uterine serosa that

Histological examination of frozen sections for patients with acute cholecystitis during cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Unexpected gallbladder cancer may present with acute cholecystitis-like manifestations. Some authors recommended that frozen section analysis should be performed during laparoscopic cholecystectomy for all cases of acute cholecystitis. Others advocate selective use of frozen section analysis based on gross examination of the specimen by the surgeon. The aim of the present study was to evaluate whether surgeons could effectively identify suspected gallbladder with macroscopic examination alone. If not, is routine frozen section analysis worth advocating? METHODS: A total of 1162 pa

Evaluating glycocalyx morphology and composition in frozen and formalin-fixed liver tumor sections.

BACKGROUND: The glycocalyx (GCX) is a glycan structure on the vascular endothelium and cancer cells. It is crucial for blood flow regulation, tumor invasion, and cancer drug resistance. Understanding the role of GCX in human tumors could help develop new cancer biomarkers and therapies. AIM: This study aimed to demonstrate microstructural changes in human primary and metastatic liver tumors (henceforth termed liver tumors) by visualizing GCX using surgical specimens and comparing formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded sections (FFPEs) with frozen sections. The results of lectin staining were also c

Irradiated Skeletal Muscle Cells Mimicking Those of Atypical Fibroxanthoma on Mohs Frozen Sections.

Radiation can induce changes to skeletal muscle cells that may mimic and thus be confused with cells of atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), pleomorphic dermal sarcoma, spindle cell squamous cell carcinoma, and other spindle soft-tissue tumors. An 80-year-old White man presented for Mohs micrographic surgery of an AFX on the left lateral neck. The medical history was notable for a tongue squamous cell carcinoma 9 years before that had been treated with wide local excision, left neck dissection, and radiation to the oral cavity and left neck. Frozen sections from the first stage of Mohs did not show t

Intraoperative examination for suspected prostatic carcinoma: frozen sections in "marginal" (cadaveric) transplant donors.

Elderly patients are a potential source of additional organ supply for transplantation. Unfortunately, with increasing age, the chance is greater that an apparently healthy aged man will be carrying a silent prostatic carcinoma. Therefore, in order to maximize safety, intraoperatory evaluation of the prostatic gland may be required to rule out adenocarcinoma. We evaluated 14 prostatic tissue specimens obtained from "marginal" donors and examined by intraoperatory frozen sections. These were positive for carcinoma in three cases and negative in 11. Examination of permanent sections from snap-fr

[Irreducible fracture dislocation of the cervical vertebrae. Patho-anatomical study using frozen sections].

A young patient with tetraplegia resulting from an unstable and irreducible fracture dislocation of the lower cervical spine unexpectedly died from an intercurrent gastrointestinal hemorrhage. Following routine autopsy the whole, intact cervical spine was frozen in situ, tomographed in the lateral projection and sectioned through on a heavy duty cryomicrotome with use of a newly modified technique. Detailed analysis of 50 sections revealed, among other things, that a fragment from the lacerated intervertebral disc had become impinged between the body of a vertebra and the spinal cord constitut
