Immunity to fungi in the lung.

The respiratory tree maintains sterilizing immunity against human fungal pathogens. Humans inhale ubiquitous filamentous molds and geographically restricted dimorphic fungal pathogens that form small airborne conidia. In addition, pathogenic yeasts, exemplified by encapsulated Cryptococcus species, and Pneumocystis pose significant fungal threats to the lung. Classically, fungal pneumonia occurs in immune compromised individuals, specifically in patients with HIV/AIDS, in patients with hematologic malignancies, in organ transplant recipients, and in patients treated with corticosteroids and ta

The hypothermic nature of fungi.

Fungi play essential roles in global health, ecology, and economy, but their thermal biology is relatively unexplored. Mushrooms, the fruiting body of mycelium, were previously noticed to be colder than surrounding air through evaporative cooling. Here, we confirm those observations using infrared thermography and report that this hypothermic state is also observed in mold and yeast colonies. The relatively colder temperature of yeasts and molds is also mediated via evaporative cooling and associated with the accumulation of condensed water droplets on plate lids above colonies. The colonies a…

[Forensic autopsy and fungi].

Fungal infestations normally represent additional findings in forensic autopsies, but also may appear as a cause of death. Moreover different kinds of fungi occur during late postmortem decay. In this paper, particular emphasis is put on the context of immunodeficiency and finally, lethal septic states.

Other fungi causing onychomycosis.

Nondermatophyte onychomycosis account for 2% to 12% of all nail fungal infections and can be caused by a wide range of fungi, mainly Scopulariopsis brevicaulis, Aspergillus versicolor, A. flavus, A. niger, A. fumigatus, Fusarium solani, F. oxysporum and Scytalidium spp. Among the predisposing factors are footwear, hyperhidrosis, local trauma, peripheral circulatory disease, and immunosuppression. These nondermatophyte fungi lack the keratinolytic capacity of dermatophytes, but they still can infect alone or in combination with the latter. Because most are considered laboratory contaminants, sp…

[Carcinogenic fungi (author's transl)].

An association of carcinogenicity of toxic substances with fungi is shortly documented and discussed. The actions of the aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) are particularly examined; but it is emphasized that other carcinogenic mycotoxins are more frequent and therefore more dangerous. The man is unable to live estranged from them, because they are a great part in ecological systems and in the work-place, resulting a potentially major threat. The range of food and feedstuffs potentially affected has been increased in recent years. In effect contamination is liable to occur during transport, storage and food …

Contributions of Ultrastructural Studies to the Knowledge of Filamentous Fungi Biology and Fungi-Plant Interactions.

Since the first experiments in 1950s, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations of filamentous fungi have contributed extensively to understand their structure and to reveal the mechanisms of apical growth. Additionally, also in combination with the use of affinity techniques (such as the gold complexes), several aspects of plant-fungal interactions were elucidated. Nowadays, after the huge of information obtained from -omics techniques, TEM studies and ultrastructural observations offer the possibility to support these data, considering that the full comprehension of the mechanisms …

Unraveling the Fungi-Cancer Connection.

Accumulating evidences indicated that both the intestinal and intratumor microbiota substantially impacted the cancer initiation, progression, and therapeutic responses. Currently, the bacterial roles in cancer are particularly emphasized, while the fungal roles are just coming onto the stage. In this Perspective, we mainly focused on the fungi-tumor axis to understand the mycobiome-cancer connection, aiming to answer the questions that cause confusion and impede translational potential: (a) Why should we value the role of mycobiome in oncological research? (b) What will the relationship betwe…

Medicinal Fungi with Antiviral Effect.

Pandemics from various viruses make natural organisms face challenges over and over again. Therefore, new antiviral drugs urgently need to be found to solve this problem. However, drug research and development is a very difficult task, and finding new antiviral compounds is desirable. A range of medicinal fungi such as Ganoderma lucidum and Cordyceps sinensis are widely used all over the world, and they can enhance human immunity and direct anti-virus activities and other aspects to play an antiviral role. Medicinal fungi are used as foods or as food supplements. In this review, the species of…

Replicative Aging in Pathogenic Fungi.

Candida albicans, Candida auris, Candida glabrata, and Cryptococcus neoformans are pathogenic yeasts which can cause systemic infections in … in other pathogenic yeasts. The studies indicate that aging is relevant for virulence in pathogenic fungi. As the mother yeast cell progressively ages, every ensuing asymmetric cell division leads to striking phenotypic changes, which results in increased antifungal and antiphagocytic resistance. This review summarizes the various techniques that are us …

Outbreak-Causing Fungi: Pneumocystis jirovecii.

Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PCP) is an important cause of morbidity in immunocompromised patients, with a higher mortality in non-HIV than in HIV patients. P. jirovecii is one of the rare transmissible pathogenic fungi and the only one that depends fully on the host to survive and proliferate. Transmissibility among humans is one of the main specificities of P. jirovecii. Hence, the description of multiple outbreaks raises questions regarding preventive care management of the disease, especially in the non-HIV population. Indeed, chemoprophylaxis is well codified in HIV patients but ther…
