Intractable chronic furunculosis: prevention of recurrences with pentoxifylline.

A 60-year-old HIV-negative man with known noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and glucose 6-phosphate-dehydrogenase deficiency anemia suffered from chronic recurrent furunculosis since the age of 30. In recent years, his condition had become increasingly severe and the recurrences increasingly frequent. Different measures including continuous therapy with large doses of systemic antibiotics for a period of 6 months failed to prevent the recurrences. Oral treatment with pentoxifylline 400 mg t.i.d. was prescribed, and 2 months later the patient experienced a dramatic and complete remission o…

An outbreak of furunculosis among high school athletes.

Furuncles (boils) are common among teenagers; however, few outbreaks have been documented. We investigated an outbreak of furuncles that occ … injury causing a missed practice or game (P = 0.04) were at increased risk. The risk of developing furunculosis did not appear to be related to contact with formites, but rather, to contact with furuncles. Although athletes shared common areas (showers, locker rooms, practice areas, the attack rates for varsity football (36%) and varsity basketball (33%) were …

Juvenile pityriasis rubra pilaris associated with hypogammaglobulinaemia and furunculosis.

We report a case of follicular keratosis with inflammatory changes, consistent with a diagnosis of atypical juvenile pityriasis rubra pilaris. An unusual feature was the occurrence of severe Staphylococcus aureus folliculitis and furunculosis, a phenomenon rarely encountered in pityriasis rubra pilaris and the other follicular keratoses. Standard antibiotic and antiseptic treatment for chronic S. aureus infection was ineffective. The patient was subsequently found to have hypogammaglobulinaemia, and treatment with human polyvalent immunoglobulin infusions was successful in eradicating the seps…

Recurrent furunculosis as a cause of isolated penile lymphedema: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Isolated lymphedema of the penis is extremely rare: combined involvement of the scrotum and penis is the norm. Furunculosis as a cause is not, to our knowledge, previously reported. We present a case of isolated penile lymphedema that responded to excision of lymphedematous tissue and reconstruction with flaps. CASE PRESENTATION: A 32-year-old Arab man presented with a three-year history of a gradually increasing, painless penile swelling. Our patient's main complaint was non-erectile sexual dysfunction. The swelling was preceded by at least three prior episodes of severe furunc…

Molecular investigation of a furunculosis outbreak at a penitentiary in southern Brazil.

BACKGROUND: The overcrowding of prison cells, combined with precarious and unsanitary conditions, is a critical factor for the health of inmates. This study carried out phenotypic and molecular characterization of the pathogen responsible for an outbreak of furunculosis in a penitentiary in southern Brazil. METHODS: Samples were collected using sterile swabs from the furuncles, then subjected to biochemical identification, disk diffusion, and RAPD-PCR. RESULTS: Biochemical tests identified Staphylococcus aureus as the etiological agent of this skin infection, while the RAPD-PCR technique rev…

An outbreak of mycobacterial furunculosis associated with footbaths at a nail salon.

BACKGROUND: In September 2000, a physician in northern California described four patients with persistent, culture-negative boils on the lower extremities. The patients had received pedicures at the same nail salon. We identified and investigated an outbreak of Mycobacterium fortuitum furunculosis among customers of this nail salon. METHODS: Patients were defined as salon customers with persistent skin infections below the knee. A case-control study was conducted that included the first 48 patients identified, and 56 unaffected friends and family members who had had a pedicure at the same sal…

Fluorescence Biomodulation for Canine Interdigital Furunculosis: Updates for Once-Weekly Schedule.

Interdigital furunculosis is a common multifactorial, inflammatory disease of the canine interdigital skin in which lesions commonly become secondarily infected. Fluorescence biomodulation (FBM) administered twice weekly has shown to effectively control clinical manifestation as adjunct therapy to systemic antibiotic. Since twice weekly regimen could be unaffordable for some pet owners, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of once weekly application of FBM in combination with systemic antibiotic on clinical manifestations of canine interdigital pyoderma, comparing the results to th…

Sepsis and multi-organ dysfunction associated with postgrooming furunculosis in a dog.

BACKGROUND: Postgrooming furunculosis, as previously described in the dog, is a type of pyoderma that typically responds to routine antimicrobial therapy. Systemic clinical signs are common but are usually mild. ANIMAL: A 3-year-old spayed female great dane was presented with marked dorsal furunculosis of 24 h duration. The clinical signs and blood analyses were consistent with sepsis, systemic inflammatory response syndrome and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC). METHODS AND RESULTS: Skin culture revealed multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection. The dog did not resp…

Repeated Multiple Episodes of Furunculosis in a Young Brittle Diabetic, Successfully Treated.

We report a 36-year-old male, a brittle diabetic, known case of diabetes mellitus for the last 10 years, noncompliant with medications, and presented with repeated episodes of furunculosis. The patient had a history of fever, headache, and one seizure episode in the last week. The patient has brittle diabetes, uncontrolled hypertension, and acute on chronic kidney injury with Vitamin D deficiency and iron deficiency anemia. The patient responded well to both systemic and local antibiotics, and all the skin lesions healed with adequate blood sugar management.

On-site detection of fish furunculosis by combining DNAzyme and carboxyl-functionalized graphene.

Furunculosis, which is caused by Aeromonas salmonicida, can induce septicemia, leading to the rapid death of fishes belonging to Salmonidae, Cyprinidae, and Fuscheridae, and lamprey. Targeting A. salmonicida, five DNAzyme sequences with the highest enrichment rates were selected through the Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX). The enrichment rates were 34.78, 23.60, 8.91, 2.89, and 2.34%, respectively. The DNAzyme with the highest activity, named D-AS-2, showed specificity and sensitivity. D-AS-2 was combined with carboxyl-functionalized graphene to construct a bi…

Association of recurrent furunculosis with Panton-Valentine leukocidin and the genetic background of Staphylococcus aureus.

Staphylococcus aureus is a major cause of skin and soft tissue infections, such as furuncles, carbuncles, and abscesses, but it also frequently colonizes the human skin and mucosa without causing clinical symptoms. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a pore-forming toxin that has been associated with soft tissue infections and necrotizing pneumonia. We have compared the genotypes, virulence gene repertoires, and phage patterns of 74 furunculosis isolates with those of 108 control strains from healthy nasal carriers. The large majority of furunculosis strains were methicillin sensitive. Clonal…

An effective combined vaccine against vibriosis and typical and atypical furunculosis in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar).

This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a novel trivalent inactivated vaccine targeting domestic strains of Vibrio anguillarum (VA), Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida (ASS), and A. salmonicida subsp. masoucida (ASM) in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). While furunculosis and vibriosis pose significant threats to the Korean aquaculture industry, the inclusion of local ASM strains in polyvalent vaccines remains rare. Three vaccine formulations-Mix1, Mix2, and Mix3-with decreasing antigen concentrations were evaluated. Comprehensive safety assessments showed that no adverse effects we…

A Case Study of Furunculosis following an Ayurvedic Oil Massage, Sudation Therapy, and Lessons to Learn.

India has a long history of using sudation therapy and oil massage as Ayurvedic treatments. However, nothing is known about its side effects … gation demonstrates that a Nirgudi oil massage or sudation causes the skin reaction associated with furunculosis. This case report illustrates the necessity of being aware of Panchakarma-related consequences and suggests that medical practitioners, patients, and product makers take into account the likelihood of such a reaction following Nirgudi oil massage an …

Vaccine-Induced Protection Against Furunculosis Involves Pre-emptive Priming of Humoral Immunity in Arctic Charr.

With respect to salmonid aquaculture, one of the most important bacterial pathogens due to high mortality and antibiotic usage is the causative agent of typical furunculosis, Aeromonas salmonicida spp. salmonicida (Asal). In Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, the host response during infections with Asal is well-documented, with furunculosis outbreaks resulting in significant mortality in commercial settings. However, less is known about the host-pathogen interactions in the emerging aquaculture species, Arctic charr Salvelinus alpinus. Furthermore, there is no data on the efficacy or response of t…
