Gardner syndrome and desmoid tumors.

Desmoid tumours present difficult management problems in patients with Gardner's syndrome. We recently studied two patients with Gardner's syndrome, who developed a desmoid tumour arising of the abdominal wall and mesenteric root. One patient had a total resection of the mesenteric desmoid tumour followed by postoperative radiotherapy. No recurrence occurred in the last three years. The other patient had an incomplete resection and refused postoperative radiotherapy. Abdominal CT scan revealed tumour expansion 6 months postoperatively. From our experience and with respect to current literature

Craniomaxillofacial Peripheral Osteomas in Gardner Syndrome.

Gardner syndrome is a precancerous condition featuring familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), multiple osteomas, and soft tissue tumors. Craniomaxillofacial peripheral osteomas often cause visible facial deformities, enabling early detection of the syndrome-frequently before FAP manifests-thus providing a critical window for intervention to prevent malignant transformation and reduce mortality. A systematic review searched 8 electronic databases from inception to December 2024. This was supplemented by one institutional case of a 21-year-old female with multiple craniomaxillofacial peripheral o…

The Gardner syndrome. Significance of ocular features.

Gardner syndrome is a dominantly inherited familial cancer syndrome characterized by intestinal polyposis, bony hamartomata, and various soft tissue tumors. The risk of malignancy during adult life is essentially 100%, but as yet no phenotypic marker nor biochemical or serological linkage have been useful to identify the presence of the gene in early life. We studied three families in which multiple and bilateral patches of congenital hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium are related uniquely to other phenotypic features of the Gardner gene. This readily identifiable characteristic may…

Hyperaldosteronism in an adolescent with Gardner's syndrome.

Gardner's syndrome, a variant of familial adenomatous polyposis, is characterized by colonic polyposis, osteomas, and soft tissue tumors. Adrenal masses in Gardner's syndrome are rare, and few have displayed clinical manifestations. We report a 16-year-old female with Gardner's syndrome, who had an aldosterone-secreting tumor resected via laparoscopic adrenalectomy.

Radiographic assessment of Gardner's syndrome.

The detection of osteomas in the maxillofacial region may be the initial clinical finding in Gardner's syndrome (GS). The most common location of osteomas is in the skull, but the lesion can also occur in the jaws. We present a case of a 47 year old male patient with GS who was referred for radiological evaluation. Extraoral examination revealed an epidermoid cyst and the patient had a history of intestinal polyps. A panoramic radiograph demonstrated numerous osteomas and diffuse sclerosis of the mandible, and compound odontomas with impacted teeth. CT scan allowed the localization and extensi

Gardner's syndrome - a case report.

Gardner's syndrome is the association of multiple colonic polyps (familial adenomatous polyposis coli - FAP) with sebaceous cysts and jaw osteomas. The significance of this dominantly inherited condition to the dentist is that the colonic polyps usually undergo malignant change by the fourth decade and the extra-intestinal lesions may be apparent before those in the bowel. As such, early detection of multiple jaw osteomas and/or multiple sebaceous cysts (particularly on the scalp) may lead to appropriate further investigation and treatment which might be life saving. Diagnosis of this conditio

Orbital osteoma in Gardner's syndrome.

PURPOSE: To report the association of an orbital osteoma with Gardner's syndrome (familial polyposis coli leading to carcinoma, multiple osteomas and skin and soft tissue tumours). METHOD: A review of patient records. RESULTS: A 29-year-old male with known Gardner's syndrome presented with long-standing right proptosis due to an osteoma of the medial wall and roof of the orbit. He had previously had prophylactic colectomy and one other osteoma of the skull excised. CONCLUSION: Although orbital osteoma in the setting of Gardner's syndrome is rare, it should be recognized as an association be

[Gardner's syndrome: report of a case].

Gardner's syndrome consists of multiple polyposis of the large intestine and soft and hard tissue tumors. The syndrome should be considered in case of supernumerary teeth, odontomas, osteoma and soft tissue tumors. These findings often precede colonic involvement. Careful attention should be directed towards the family history. The importance of this syndrome lies in the great tendency of the polyps to become malignant. Dentist and oral surgeon play an important role in the early detection of this syndrome and thus prevention of malignant degeneration of the intestinal polyps.

Mesenteric fibromatosis in Gardner's syndrome.

Gardner's syndrome, first described in the 1950s, is a composite clinical entity characterized by intestinal polyps, osteomas, fibromas, and epidermal cysts. A case of mesenteric fibromatosis in Gardner's syndrome is presented. Whereas most of the literature on this subject stresses the significance of the intestinal polyposis and its premalignant potential, in this paper the serious significance of the intraabdominal fibromas is stressed. This case demonstrates an unusual complication of erosion of this tumor into the small intestine, resulting in multiple intestinal fistulae with abscess for

Biliary neoplasia in Gardner's syndrome.

Familial adenomatous polyposis coli is now known to encompass a more complicated spectrum of anomalies than was initially suspected. The term Gardner's syndrome, broadened from its original definition, currently includes all cases of familial polyposis coli with extracolonic neoplasms. Small-bowel adenomata occur in approximately 12% of these patients, and sporadic instances of biliary neoplasia have also been reported. We describe multifocal adenomatous change with severe dysplasia of the gallbladder in a young woman known to have familial adenomatous polyposis coli. Review of this and other

Orbital osteoma in Gardner's syndrome.

A 30-year-old woman developed proptosis secondary to a left ethmoidal compact osteoma. At age 29 years, a mandibular eburnated (ivory) osteoma was excised. At age 25 years, multiple adenomatous polyps of the colon were resected. Her father, age 61 years, had multiple intestinal polyps and bilateral mandibular osteoma. A 24-year-old sister had an osteoma of the forehead. Gardner's syndrome is an autosomal dominantly inherited disorder characterized by intestinal polyposis, various skin and soft tissue tumors, and osteomas of the bony skeleton. Orbital osteomas occur rarely.

Periampullary malignancy in Gardner's syndrome.

Three cases of familial polyposis coli with associated periampullary malignancies are reported and the literature reviewed, which disclosed 16 additional cases. An additional five unreported cases are known to exist. The authors believe that the development of periampullary malignancy in FPC is a definite extracolonic manifestation of the disease and should be considered a variant of Gardner's syndrome. It is recommended that all FPC patients with colon polyps undergo routine surveillance of the upper gastrointestinal tract and that all duodenal polyps discovered be surgically removed when fea
