Quinolones and the gastrointestinal tract.

A number of studies have evaluated the efficacy of the new fluoroquinolones for therapy of bacterial enteric diseases and for prevention of … rhea, granulocytopenic patients, and patients with selected other infections of, or related to, the gastrointestinal tract.

Cannabinoids and the Gastrointestinal Tract.

The synthesis and degradation of endocannabinoids, location of cannabinoid (CB) receptors, and cannabinoid mechanisms of action on immune/inflammatory, neuromuscular, and sensory functions in digestive organs are well documented. CB2 mechanisms are particularly relevant in immune and sensory functions. Increasing use of cannabinoids in the United States is impacted by social determinants of health including racial discrimination, which is associated with tobacco and cannabis co-use, and combined use disorders. Several conditions associated with emesis are related to cannabinoid use, including

Cannabis and the Gastrointestinal Tract.

UNLABELLED: Cannabis has been used for its medicinal purposes since ancient times. Its consumption leads to the activation of Cannabis receptors CB1 and CB2 that, through specific mechanisms can lead to modulation and progression of inflammation or repair. The novel findings are linked to the medical use of Cannabis in gastrointestinal (GI) system. PURPOSE: The objective of the present paper is to elucidate the role of Cannabis consumption in GI system. An additional aim is to review the information on the function of Cannabis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS AND RESULTS

NSAIDs and the gastrointestinal tract.

NSAIDs incur significant gastrointestinal (GI) side effects. The complication risk increases with history of peptic ulcer or older age. Helicobacter pylori infection and cardioprotective aspirin have independent and additive risks in the presence of NSAID use. NSAID enteropathy is increasingly recognized. Cardiovascular and GI risk stratification and H. pylori infection testing should be done before initiating NSAIDs. An NSAID combined with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) is comparable to cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 inhibitors for gastroprotection, but for high-risk patients, COX-2 plus PPI should be

Stress and the gastrointestinal tract.

Stress, defined as an acute threat to homeostasis, evokes an adaptive or allostatic response and can have both a short- and long-term influence on the function of the gastrointestinal tract. The enteric nervous system is connected bidirectionally to the brain by parasympathetic and sympathetic pathways forming the brain-gut axis. The neural network of the brain, which generates the stress response, is called the central stress circuitry and includes the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, amygdala and periaqueductal gray. It receives input from the somatic and visceral afferent pathwa…

Stenting of the gastrointestinal tract.

Self-expandable metal stents are being increasingly used to palliate malignant stenoses of the gastrointestinal tract. These prostheses have made it possible to reestablish luminal continuity in patients with malignant obstruction of esophagus, gastric outlet, small bowel, or colon who are at high risk of surgical intervention. Despite technologic refinements in the stents and their delivery systems, and an increasing number of studies related to self-expandable metal stents, data regarding their long-term efficacy, side effect profile, and true cost efficacy in comparison with other treatment…

Anthrax of the gastrointestinal tract.

When swallowed, anthrax spores may cause lesions from the oral cavity to the cecum. Gastrointestinal anthrax is greatly underreported in rural disease-endemic areas of the world. The apparent paucity of this form of anthrax reflects the lack of facilities able to make the diagnosis in these areas. The spectrum of disease, ranging from subclinical infection to death, has not been fully recognized. In some community-based studies, cases of gastrointestinal anthrax outnumbered those of cutaneous anthrax. The oropharyngeal variant, in particular, is unfamiliar to most physicians. The clinical feat

Lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract accounts for 4% to 20% of all NHLs and is the most common extranodal site of presentation. The stomach is the major organ involved by GI lymphoma. Helicobacter pylori infection, immunosuppression after solid-organ transplantation, celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection may be risk factors for GI lymphoma. A significant proportion of gastric lymphomas are of low-grade histology and arise from mucosal-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT). Such MALT lymphomas may be associated with H

Amylin and the gastrointestinal tract.

There is increasing evidence that alterations in the rate of gastric emptying - both acceleration and slowing - are present in patients with diabetes mellitus. A number of different factors can influence the rate of gastric emptying. For example, a large meal volume, a high-fat meal, and the presence of high glucose concentrations will all slow the rate at which the contents of the stomach are emptied into the small intestine. Studies in spontaneously diabetic BB/Wistar rats have shown that administration of the pancreatic islet hormone amylin slows the rate of gastric emptying, and similar ob

[Ethanol and the gastrointestinal tract].

The effects of ethanol upon the gastrointestinal tract (mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, duodenum, Oddi's sphincter, small bowel, colon and rectum) were reviewed. Several studies showed that the incidence of cancer in the mouth and pharynx is increased in alcoholics as a consequence of ethanol effects and probably those of other compounds found in liquors. The gastroesophageal reflux disease may be induced by alcohol since it reduces the pressure in the lower and the upper esophageal sphincter, as well as the extent of primary peristalsis. Several studies showed a strong correlation between…

Angiodysplasia of the gastrointestinal tract.

Angiodysplasia is an important vascular lesion of the gut and a source of significant morbidity from bleeding. This lesion is probably responsible for approximately 6.0% of cases of lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding and 1.2-8.0% of cases of hemorrhage from the upper GI tract. Small bowel angiodysplasia accounts for 30-40% of cases of GI bleeding of obscure origin and represents the single most common cause for hemorrhage in this subset of patients. Lesions in the large bowel occur most often in the right colon. Their cause is unknown but most are probably acquired and the result of a degene

Scintigraphy in the gastrointestinal tract.

Selected papers published over the past year in the areas of radionuclide hepatobiliary imaging, gastric emptying, and gastrointestinal bleeding are reviewed. Two advances in cholescintigraphy are particularly emphasized and discussed. First, morphine-augmented cholescintigraphy has established itself as an accurate alternative to 2 to 4 hour delayed imaging for the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis. Second, sincalide-stimulated cholescintigraphy with calculation of a gallbladder ejection fraction has proven to be a useful test for confirming the clinical diagnosis of chronic acalculous cholecy
