Alzheimer's dementia (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease which is one of the most common forms of dementia in the above 65 years old age group. Diagnosis is based upon evaluation of cognitive skills, elimination of other dementia associated diseases and on cranial CT examination. However, definitive diagnosis is proved only by neurohistological findings. The etiology of the disease is unknown and effective treatment is not available. Intensive research into the pathomechanism of the disease revealed a connection between increased frequency of apolipoprotein E4 allele and later onse

Thermostability and propagation in different cell cultures and interferon-producing ability of three vaccine mumps virus strains (Jeryl Lynn, Leningrad-Zagreb and PZH-17) and ten wild viruses isolated from patients suffering from mumps were investigated. Considerable differences were found after vaccinal and wild virus strains were subjected to a temperature of 50 degrees C for 30 minutes. Wild strains were significantly more thermoresistant than the vaccinal ones. Differences in the propagation ability between wild an attenuated vaccinal strains were also found when tested in the Vero cell li

We have studied 8 girls with Rett syndrome, including 2 sisters. Their ages ranged from 1 to 26 years. The youngest patient presented with developmental delay and atypical infantile spasms. The oldest was the sister of a patient followed over a period of 13 years and showed the typical history and clinical picture of Rett syndrome. DNA from white blood cells of these patients was investigated for alterations in the OTC structural gene. As compared to normal control individuals no gross alterations occur in the OTC structural genes of patients with Rett's syndrome.

Genetic marker systems have been employed to investigate the origin and development of many human tumors. The type of information already gained with such systems includes the probable single cell origin of chronic myelocytic leukemia in a marrow stem cell. The G-6-PD system has also confirmed the hypothesis that at least some hereditary and viral tumors have multiple cell origin. However, Burkitt lymphoma, the malignancy in man for which there is a great amount of circumstantial evidence for a viral cancer, has a clonal origin. Of particular interest is the demonstration that early relapses a

The 93 patients of the present study resemble each other in their psychosis by phasic course and complete recovery. Frequently the attacks showed an anxious and paranoid syndrome in monopolar repetition or in bipolar change with ecstatic symptoms. Rarely an incoherent state of agitation or stupor could be observed. Considering the distribution of simple inherited serum groups, there is a significant increase of Gc 1-1 and Hp 2-2 in the patient collective. Evidently these serum groups are risk components in a multifactorial hereditary system possessing with Gc 1-1 a marker of the schizophrenic

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Although the research over the last decades has provided new insight into AD pathophysiology, there is currently no cure for the disease. AD is often only diagnosed once the symptoms have become prominent, particularly in the late-onset (sporadic) form of AD. Consequently, it is essential to further new avenues for early diagnosis. With recent advances in genomic analysis and a lower cost of use, the exploration of genetic markers alongside RNA molecules can offer a key avenue for early…

Peritoneal surface malignancies (PSMs) represent a biologically diverse group of cancers that range from primary peritoneal mesothelioma to metastatic gastrointestinal cancers. Because of the heterogenous nature of PSM, there is a large gap in molecular characterization of these cancers. This article reviews the underlying molecular and genetic mechanisms for PSM.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is a multifactorial socially significant disease affecting the peripheral and central nervous system. The diagnosis of "migraine" is still the only clinical, and additional methods of inspection are only required to avoid secondary headaches if certain "signs of danger". Accordingly, the search for biomarkers of migraine, confirming the diagnosis, rather than refuting others, is the leading vector in this scientific field.
AIM: In this paper we have analyzed the literature data on the genetic markers associated with migraine.
METHODS: List of genes was compiled using Pat…

PURPOSE: To investigate possible associations between genetic markers and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG).
METHODS: A number of genetic markers were typed in 84 unrelated patients with POAG and compared with a random sample of healthy individuals. The markers were Transferrin, Group Specific Component, G1m (1), G1m (2) and G3m (5) Allotypes, Adenylate Kinase, Adenosin Deaminase, Glyoxalase I and Acid Phosphatase and PCR-based markers HLA-DQA1 and D1S80.
RESULTS: No significant differences were found except the strong association between the group of POAG patients and Acid Phosphatase ACP*…

Neurocristopathy is the disorder in which the series of cell and tissue derived from the neural crest are affected. A variety of neural crest tumors, and systemic neurocristopathies such as neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and type 2 (NF2), multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2 (MEN2) and dysplastic nevus syndrome are included in this category. Genetic abnormalities of specific proto-oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes have been discovered in the neurocristopathies. The NF1 gene has GTP-ase activating protein activity, regulates ras pathway and acts as a potential tumor suppressor. The NF2 gene,

The Ig allotype G3m (c3) was numerically more frequent among 70 Kenyan Burkitt lymphoma (BL) cases than in 70 Kenyans with other tumors of the neck (0.02 greater than p greater than 0.01). The distribution of allotypes G1m (a, x) and G3m (b5) did not differ between 50 Caucasian BL cases and blood donors.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is an autosomal dominant disease caused by mutations in sarcomeric proteins. The disease is characterized by left ventricular hypertrophy in the absence of an increased external load, and myofibrillar disarray. A large number of mutations in genes coding for the beta-myosin heavy chain (beta-MyHC), cardiac troponin T (cTnT), cardiac troponin I, alpha-tropomyosin, myosin binding protein C (MyBP-C), and myosin light chain 1 and 2 in patients with HCM have been identified. Genotype-phenotype correlation studies have shown that mutations carry prognostic significa

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor symptoms such as bradykinesia, rigidity, and resting tremor. While the majority of PD cases are sporadic, approximately 15-20% of cases have a genetic component. Advances in neuroimaging techniques have provided valuable insights into the pathophysiology of PD, including the different genetic forms of the disease. This literature review aims to summarize the current state of knowledge regarding neuroimaging findings in genetic PD, focusing on the most prevalent known genetic forms: mutations in the GBA1, LR

In this review, we have summarized the existing knowledge of ulcerative colitis (UC) markers based on current literature, specifically, the roles of potential new biomarkers, such as circulating, fecal, genetic, and epigenetic alterations, in UC onset, disease activity, and in therapy response. UC is a complex multifactorial inflammatory disease. There are many invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods in UC, including several laboratory markers which are employed in diagnosis and disease assessment; however, colonoscopy remains the most widely used method. Common laboratory abnormalities c

In this study ocular conditions like cataract, corneal dystrophy, retinal detachment, primary glaucoma, myopia and strabismus have been examined for certain genetic markers to estimate the relative risks involved. The incidence of nontasters for PTC was significantly high in cases with congenital cataract, aphakic retinal detachment and convergent and divergent squint as compared to controls. Among nontasters, the frequency of total taste blindness was strikingly high in the disease group as compared to controls. Blood group A individuals showed significantly high risk for zonular cataract, co…
